its not gonna stop the corruption already ingrained in the police force

men, even with the increment, those guys are getting greedier by the hour

i think its down to the Nigerian corruption thing and the low standard of those recruited in to the force, educationally and character wise

According to Fela,if the president is a thief like we always have in nigeria and the presidents controls the army and the police,it invariably means that the police and the army are thieves too.

Corruption is a norm in nigeria,it will only take something clos to revolution to put it in check, like Idaigbon wanted to do

That is it, reforms and reforms should be the beginning of change in the force.
They should start by raising standard for those being employed.
If possible, check the records of those coming into the force (gosh! I have forgotten, Nigeria has no record bank).
There are so many stuffs needed to be put in place, to get NPF working again, and reducing corruption amongst them.
Let get it right, corruption can never die in our force, just like anywhere else in the world.

We still dont get d point. U ll agree with me dat the package attached to a job is one of the criteria people will want to go for such job.Why do people want to work in oil companys, telecommunication companys etc Is it not because of d pay package attached or u think its just about the kind of work being done there?

The startegy is this. When d pay is good, the job becomes competitive and the fear of losing it becomes obvious. It may not translate to stopping bribery agreed. Graduates can see it as worth joining then a kind of change-over system can be achieved to better the system. Previous govt. b4 Obj had never meant well for the police that is why u see the neglect so that they can be easily used. When u re not assured of good welfare and u re given a gun, what do u think u would be tempted to do? Use what u have to get what u want. When the pay is good and other  things put in place, u can give them warning signal that can put them on their toes by telling them their are many people out there who wants their job. I just believe its a just a matter of time the NPF wll get better.

That is why i said it is a norm,it is generally practiced and accepted, even children see it as a way of life in nigeria,it is self destruction.

If u read my last post very well, I said AND OTHER THINGS PUT IN PLACE. My brother salary package is a kind of reform whether u like it or not if u want to set standard. I repeat TO WHOM MUCH IS NOT GIVEN, MUCH SHOULD NOT BE EXPECTED.

They can't be seen as paid better paid but as bunch of criminals helping themselves indiscriminately with the public funds, they make the rules without any form of checks and balances

Well, even if they are not stealing, the jumbo pay they are earning is a enough to reform them, if at all better pay can reform.

Traditionally nigerian politicians aspire for leadership to wreck the country not to deliver, like they call it,a share of the national cake. They will stop at nothing in draining the coffer.

Indeed, they will stop at nothing in wrecking the economy. How do you explain a situation where an IG of Police loads a whole Landcruiser jeep with money, just because he has been removed from office? The annoying part of it is that, the whole cash is from Louis Edet House. What was the cash doing there in the first place and what was it meant for?

The FG needs to make this commitment a reality. It is now a yearly ritual to announce to Nigerians that Police wages will be increased sad sad Our leaders should start taking action concerning their promises. I believe our policemen should be paid nothing less than 80,000 Naira a month. These are people whose lives can be terminated anytime by men of the underworld. Apart from the issue of Police salaries, our cops need to be retrained and well equipped. Many of the Police barracks should be pulled down and officers should be made to live among civilians. The Government can then subsidise their rent. Personally, I believe that until Nigeria's tax collection techniques are improved and more Nigerians are made to pay their taxes, the country's development will be slow. Cheers.

I agree with you, but not totally. What have they done with the little they have collected? Until we see what they have done with little, they should not expect much from the citizenry in terms of taxes.

They do not need any federal increment in wages, cos they already make enough on the streets. But come to think of it I believe it was just to get cheap publicity from the press considering the fact that his ministry has been quiet for some time.I also remember that recently the issues of barracks renovation is an ongoing federal govt.project.But in any-case if this is true then I will say it's just a big waste of money. What the Nigerian Police need is a change in their psyche, approach to work and learning to be civil.Just take ur time to watch this report on the Nigerian Police released very recently and u will know that the Nigerian Police can never be redeemed from the way they are going. The alarming thing in that report was that An average Nigerian Police is likely to commit a crime than to solve one.

Re: Fg To Increase Police Salaries - Latest News by benchwest: 11:02pm On May 30, 2010
hello evry one, nice to read all your opinion about our police.
i really do thinck that the increament of our police force salary will impact the qaulity of jobs they render to our society.
not only our police force. but all security agencies ,police, custorm,immigration,army.etc.

With the increase of salaries in thus various security agencies, this various job will then attract most of our intelectual graduates,
that are all in the streets wasting there knowledge in nothing.
we should remember that more than 50 percent of our security agencies are not edaucated , we need that graduate from science to work in the police science lab department, or military research or science department.
we need laywers, mathematicians, doctors, etc. in this various security agencies
so the salary increase will provide more jobs, provide more qualified poeple, hence there is salary increase.
when we have more qualified poeple for the various agencies ,then we can provide them with suitable equipement.
for example who will control our central database ?. we need qualified computer scientist specialist.our graduates with that knowledge should be employed for it,
for example
i stay in spain,i was travelling to ghana by road with abc transport,s i had my pasport and ofcourse my spanish resident.
on arriving on a immigration checking point before semme boarder, this immigration oficer stoped us and asked me for my passport, of which i gave my passport to him,he asked me where i was going and i said spain.he asked for my visa to spain, and i showed him my spanish resident card.
he said to me that resident is diferent from visa, that even if i have resident in europe i still need a visa to travel to spain,
i was so ashamed of an immigration oficer of federal republic of nigeria.
so this is example of what i meant in my above opinion,we need to employ graduates into this forces,so with the increase of salary it will atract more qualified people,so it is in developed world.police are well respected because you see then well learned-

but then we should start rehabilitation for this various agencies aswell.

god bless nig
