Anambra state to Partner with FG on Revitalizing the Omabala Giant Irrigation Facility - Obiano

Obika Chidiebele.

The Anambra state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, made this known during a working visit to the Omabala Giant Irrigation Complex Situated at Ifite Ogwari in Ayamelum LGA of the State. He said he was on site to fully ascertain why such a magnificent facility is redundant and not functional, stressing that he would soon enter into talks with the Minister of Agriculture, Hon Audu Ogbe in revitalizing the facility.

Obiano, who was in the company of the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture in the state, Hon Afam Mbanefo, observed that, the giant irrigation facility which was established in the year 1987 by the then Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, has remained moribund since 2001.

The governor was conducted round the facility by the Anambra - Imo River Basin Project Manager, Mr Eric Ejiebukwa, who informed him that the facility services about 16km stretch of canal, has the capacity to irrigate about 3850 acres of land, and covers about 5000 farmers and the entire irrigable lands in Ayamelum, LGA.

By the estimation of Gov Willie Obiano, the facility when fully operational will add about 250000 metric tons of rice per season, which will in turn increase the annual rice production in Anambra to about 700000 metric tons.

In a vote of thanks by the Igwe of Ifite Ogwari, Igwe Alfred Ofuebe, he appreciated the efforts of Gov Willie Obiano in continuously devising ways of making Anambra better.

In his separate remarks, the Igwe of Omor, Igwe Oranu Chidume, informed the governor that the Ayamelum people are happy with him. He pointed that the governor visited Ayamelum last week, and now, back for another visit. He asked rather rhetorically, "who will love and care for us more than Obiano?".
