I personally believe Heriot Watt - EBS.
However University of Aberdeen is a top school and you might consider an MBA if you are somehow interested in the oil & gas or Energy industry.

Glasgow Caledonian is a new school and aren't as highly rated as the other 2 above.

Some schools do a grading system of;
Distinction;
Commendation;
Merit;
PAss;
FAil

But not 1st or second class?

Hello nairalanders,,,does it really matter what grade you get during your masters level,,,

The grade you make in your master's degree matters if you're thinking of competing for a FULLY FUNDED PHD PROGRAMME or if—with peer-reviewed publication(s) in world class journals in your field of study—you aspire to teach at the university level without a PhD (I must add that tenured positions/lectureships are extremely difficult to come by without PhDs, but in some fields like Fine and Applied Arts and Architecture where terminal masters would do, I've seen guys getting tenured positions/lectureships without PhDs)! If you're entering the labour market, your grade in the master's degree (somewhat) doesn't matter. Nonetheless, whay not try and get the best grade possible on the programme?

I believe Distinction covers your 1st class
Merit and commendation should do for your 2nd class.

There are however some schools who do a strict;
Distinction, Pass or Fail.
Re: How Important Is Masters Grade by c0274309: 3:30pm On Jun 02, 2010
Aiming as high as possible always benefits in the long run however I personally believe what you learn during your Masters is far more important than the actual Masters grade itself (depending on your school of course wink ).

Remember at Masters Level you can only have a Distinction, Pass or a Fail. A Distinction will surely open more doors in terms of scholarships for further study or job opportunities than a Pass however you'll still need to ask yourself, Can I do everything I've learnt during my Masters practically in the real business world.

Irrespective of what grade you have Distinction / Pass (God forbid Fail) you're far better of knowing everything you're being taught during your Masters practically.

For those saying its a waste of time and money please ignore them. A Masters degree will always pay for itself once the aspired job has been achieved (especially in Nigeria where Certificates are a norm).

The university education is US is somehow too easy and fluffy in most cases due to their lack of specialisation in the subject studied.

In the UK, the MSc is at most times not differentiated from a BSc excepti one wants to do a Phd or work in research in industry in the subject area.

LOL!!, I guess that's why they are world leaders in practically all sectors of the industry. I'll still take that "easy" American education thank you. grin

university of aberdeen-advanced secondary school

heriot watt- dont know much

glasgow caledonia-cheap school and not highly rated in Uk

literally what you should understand is that the school u do ur MBA becomes secondary after you graduate its all about what u can do -experience, my candid opinion is dont spend too much money for MBA in uk, look for the cheapest school!!! but if u ave the money then go for it
Re: How Important Is Masters Grade by ehala: 4:32pm On Jun 02, 2010
Very important

I had a distinction from a very reputable university in the UK and was immediately given monetary award and also employment in an energy industry. As long as u give your best, know what u r doing and link your dissertation to the practical world then surely even if u make a pass but know your onions, then opportunity will surely come.
My advice is what is worth doing at all is worth doing well.
Re: How Important Is Masters Grade by sley4life(m): 5:08pm On Jun 02, 2010
Master degree is ok in 9ja system. But if u are self employed u can bone that.
Re: How Important Is Masters Grade by joj123(f): 5:33pm On Jun 02, 2010
1st degree and Masters are both important in Naija's labour market. Most employers ask for masters degree to disqualify thousands of unwanted applications.

Also, in a working environment where the competition is really tight, master degree is used for promoting staff unless the organization based its staff promotion on pratical appraisal.

So Dear, if you have the opportunity of going for your master, do not hesitate to do so, except you're self employed. Conclusively, foreign master's degree is considered better of.

Lol!
Re: How Important Is Masters Grade by joj123(f): 5:38pm On Jun 02, 2010
The grade you make in your masters does not really matter even though failure is equally not accepted, but the practical experience you acquire and put to use makes the valuable difference.

Lol!
Re: How Important Is Masters Grade by Tatase(f): 6:26pm On Jun 02, 2010
I don't think in general, your Masters grade really matters UNLESS you're planning on furthering your education either with a PhD or some other Masters or certificate program or something where they might want to see transcripts in order to admit you etc.

Also, some high profile recruitment firms (not naming names) DO want to see your Masters transcript especially if you don't have loads of experience AND your degree is in a field you're claiming expertise in (usually they want to examine your coursework to help them identify skills and technical ability you may not yet have a lot of job experience in). This is not the norm though, so if you sucked through your masters, though you may kind of have wasted your money, it's not the end of the world.

i can see all of u that have replied to this post so far are either born liars of have no idea what a amsters degree is if not then u would know that master degrees are not graded like first degrees ( i.e 2:1, 2:2, 1st class 3rd class etc) the are only three ranks attainable in a masters degree: distinction, pass and fail!!!

Well I think you must be the one deluded or just self-absorbed!!!

Different colleges have different grading systems for their postgraduate programmes, some schools just give the three you mentioned while others have a broader grading system. Always argue with facts and stop replying other peoples posts by insulting them, it tends to show you are very uncouth!!

graduate schools in the US well most give GPA's for the master's level.
you need a gpa of at least a 3.5/4.0(4.5/5.0) to move on to the PHD level. going below 3.0 places you on probation or gets you kicked out of the program.

grades are indeed important for a masters degree. how can u master something u are average at?

It is not only education that makes you world leaders, a lot of factors come into play too.

Germany for example has what is relatively shite unis but yet is the European leader economically.

America has excellent graduate schools though, that churn out the best.

Other factors that contribute to attaining leadership might be natural resources, local power system, population power, landscape advantage and obviously the most important of all: FREE LABOUR. 200 years of people building your country for free and no need for humane working conditions like during slavery helps.  wink

I am not saying their education is piece easy, I am just saying the stardard at undergrad is slightly lower than some other places.

Add national psyche to that.

America has a very good psyche like the Germans.

American psyche is "Be the best, boast about it and encourage/admire those that are the best".

Britain is pull down the best, support only the underdog.

China is everything you do is for the people/party.

Nigeria is being the best does not matter, just respect the biggest moneybag, no matter how he obtained the money. undecided

I can see that since you are not exposed, then i cant blame you.

For your records, schools like Uni Aberdeen uses the grading system.

It is better you research well before you say your mind to any post.

A word is enough for the wise

Re: How Important Is Masters Grade by Nobody: 8:05pm On Jun 02, 2010
"At masters level this depends on the University.

Most have a pass grade at 40%. Confusingly some universities set a pass mark of 50% for postgraduate work

Most also then have a distinction at around 70% (but some will say you can qualify for a distinction if you get less than that in one or two modules)

Some then have a Merit level at around 60%. Many more just have the 2 grades above.

So it's unlike undergraduate degrees where there is much greater uniformity.

(plus there's the complicating factor of Oxbridge MAs as others have already explained)", i was just online with a very educated scholar and asked him the question and this was his response. he replied my quick e-mail

there is no university in the world that awards master degrees in the manner of 1st class, 2:1, 2:2 etc the only words ever used in relation to master degrees are pass, distinction, merit and fail the only thing that differce from university is the percentage in which these grades are calculated im 100% sure of what im saying and any one arguing with me or calling me "shallow" is just highliting his own stupidity

actually that pass distinction and merit stuff seems to be predominant in the UK. hardly any american university uses that.
