Episode One: The Mirage (Names and Locket)

It was a crowded street that Delani alighted into on this evening, commuters on the race as ever on streets of Lagos, cars honking loud enough that even deaf ears are pained. Pedestrians huffing and puffing, pushing one another on the overly crowded street walks, a slight drizzle crowned off the frustrating evening under a sky that promised more rain....Yuck! he sidestepped a puddle and shifted gear into a fast-paced stroll, like any other veteran Lagosian, the ability to seamlessly move from an uncomfortable sitting in a Danfo to a speedy walk on the street is ingrained in him. He was about turning a bend when the hackles rose on the nape of his neck. He'd walked this way for years and never had he felt this discomfort that permeated his feelings now, it was like a huge lead settled in his belly, he stopped walking and turned silently to roam his gaze over the people behind him, nothing seemed out of place, the closest pedestrians to him grumbled at his delay and pushed him out of place as they stepped past him. Delani heaved a sigh and was turning back to continue his walk home when his eyes caught them...two men..no three! These guys had boarded and alighted the same bus with him! They'd dressed to look different from one another, to fit in with the dynamic crowd on the street. One was in a white shirt and black pants trousers, another in a jean jacket with open buttons, the grainy Bob Marley image on his white under-shirt grinning stupidously, the third was on suit; black, with sunshades locked onto his skull. They should have succeeded in not alerting Delani in their appearance, but one thing unified them; their strategic walk...they are not too fast or slow, just purposeful in their approach. This is danger! Delani knew, without doubt in his being, he immediately turned and pick up the pace and he sensed the men speeding up also, his fast paced walking geared into a Sprint!

Vehicles of different sizes and class; all were locked in a traffic hold-up that had given no opportunity of an inch of movement for the past fifteen minutes. This was the window view of Detective Martin's humble office, but his attention was far away from the stagnancy on the streets. His thoughts were rummaging his current investigation of a mysterious case of suicide. It wasn't that suicidal deaths are rare in Lagos, it's naturally a city famed to be full of demented people and criminal activities are like bread to Lagos' jam. But a suicidal motive has been so far absent for this one.....a knock intercepted his train of thoughts "Come in!" He called to the door, the hinges tweaked as the door was pushed open by one of Martin's assistants. The gentleman saluted and Martin signalled to put him at ease, he turned his swivel chair away from the window to face the man, who was standing awkwardly, some sheaf of papers clutched in his hands as if he's to squeeze some liquid out of the poor things.
"Yes?" Martin quizzed with raised eyebrows, "We swept through the scene Sir, entirely....." "And?" Martin interjected, with the air of a superior that has no time to waste on frivolities. "We found a pendant Sir, it was lying right beside the open suitcase in the room, and what's interesting is that there's a little plaque on it with an inscribed name!" The man watched Martin expecting excitement in his boss's countenance, and he wasn't disappointed. Martin pushed himself up slightly from the chair in eagerness "What's the name dumb-head!?" "Virgo Sir!" The man answered in a hurry. Martin sank bank into the chair "Virgo? That's as strange as names come, you're sure that's what you saw? No letters missing or scratched out or nothing?" "It's exactly that boss" the man answered demurely. "That doesn't help us much, infact it's a strange name to have here in Nigeria, it's either not a name, maybe a nickname, password or code to something else. If it's a name then we're considering foreign possibilities here." "Meaning the victim has a foreign name sir? But how does a suicide victim put off his pendant ,drop it and then go hang himself?" Martin smiled at his assistant's question. "First possibility is that it's a coincidence, the pendant dropped and he didn't notice. Second is that the pendant has a poignant meaning to the victim, probably part of the reason for the suicide." The assistant brought a hand to scratch the thinning hair on his head "First means we're still stuck at no clue Sir, while the second possibility gives us somewhere to start from..." "There's a third possibility...." "Huhh? What's that?" The assistant's obvious confusion could be seen clearly on his face. "The pendant might've been dropped by someone else, contrary to what the reception at the hotel told us, someone could've made it into that room with the victim." The assistant's mouth dropped wide open "You're saying.....ehm you're saying that...." "Yes" Martin answered the confused man with a bitter smile stuck to his face. "I'm saying this might be an elaborately planned murder! In fact, I believe it is...and I'll catch that damned murderer, whoever it is cannot get away!" "One more thing Sir!.. the room had a odd smell, perfume I believe." "Really? What brand was it?" "Unidentified Sir! None of us could pick it out."
Martin banged his hand on the table, shaking the documents on the old oak wood. "This would not ruin me! I'll get to the roots." He stood from his chair to stroll up and down the room in deep brooding while the assistant gently went out of the room, closing the door softly, leaving his boss with his dark thoughts.

He turned the corner and ran as fast as his legs could carry him, the men were still studiously at his heels. Delani stopped immediately, when it dawned on him that he'd just ran into a deserted area, a large empty mechanic shop lie right in front of him, it's massive width covered from end to end with grease on almost every available inch of the floor, some rusted metal gadgets lay in a corner, there was no where else to run, Delani knew he's trapped. The men ran in behind him and the one on suit told him in a cold deadly voice "Don't move a step kid, if you move an inch I'll shoot out your brains!" There was no hiding place, no where to run, fear gripped the entirety of Delani's beings, he started shaking. He's heard news of hired killings all around Lagos, but he'd never thought assassination or kidnapping happens to normal citizens like him...he's just a kid in his final high school year for crying out loud! "Go on your knees boy" the man went on. Delani was too dazed to obey, his legs unstable, his brain clouded. A devious kick in the back sent him lying face down in the centre of the greasy stall, a cracking thud enumerating the suddeness of his fall. The kick was followed by another, buried into his side by the man in jean jacket, Delani screamed in pain and rolled himself into a ball, pulling his knees up to his chest as he lied helpless on the floor. "Nooo, please, nooo" he wailed, "please spare my life, I've done no wrong, please don't kill me." The guy in jean jacket bursted into laughter, the one in white shirt bent down and pointed his gun at Delani's face "Nooo, nooo, I'm sorry! We have to kill you" his mocking gestures threw the jean guy into more fits of laughter. "It's ok guys" the leader in suit commanded sharply, "this isn't a joke, it's business!" "Alright boss" the two echoed while the guy in white shirt gave Delani a hard smack on his head as he rose to his feet. "You shouldn't have done that" Delani muttered softly, his voice hardly audible for the white shirt to hear. The guy turned back to Delani in surprise "What did you say just now?" "I said you shouldn't have hit my head, now you've gone and done it and you're all going to pay big time!" The boy's voice was underlined by a tint of danger and delusion but the guy in white did not take note, he approached the boy to deal with him and at that moment...things went awry!!

The suit was stuffy and altogether Dread felt uncomfortable. He's had numerous occasions to put on the formal suit, either on social function duties or in meetings with his high profile clienteles, but no matter how many times he'd donned the thing, no matter the weather he'd donned it in....he's never and will never feel comfortable in suit. His discomfort at this time actually stem from more than his clothing, he stared at the "package" he was supposed to deal with sprawled helpless on the floor and wondered what the young kid could have done to require a death wish from some really powerful men, it must have been something very big, that termination of his life was the option that was considered for him.Unfortunately for the kid, Dread considers himself a business man and he deals in life with no respect for the youth or the old. He stared at Kinde who was making a mockery of the boy's pleas and ordered him off. The order from Virgo to kill the kid had been clear, very clear. Dread hates working with unknown clients but he'd been pushed over to taking this job by the huge paycheck, he'd never known Virgo, and this was a deal hatched and finalised on a phone call...the name Virgo sounds strange, it would of course be one of these rich chiefs in Lagos, or an upcoming politician who'd decided that a strange code name would be good for his clandestine activities. All the same, Dread could care less, he's been given a contract and as a thorough professional he has to carry it out, no matter the repulsive nature of the job.
He stared at the kid once more, ready to give the order of elimination and right there, right then! The most amazing scene unfolded before his eyes, one he would not live to tell it's story.

Episode Two: The Conception (Seeds of Poison)

"You dey fear?" Remi asked as he tapped the young man sitted by him on the arm. "Abeg chop the meat jor, no dey do yanga for here ohh, na baba house we dey and baba too sure" he continued with a mouthful of meat pieces. It was an evening of a day in September 1998 and they were in a condo located on the outskirts of Lagos, more precisely in Ogun state. This was a period of significant effect in Nigeria as the military government has once more promised to relinquish governance to Civilians. While Remi's partner seemed to be obviously ill at ease, Remi was the complete opposite, he has been here a couple of times and had met their host once before. The fact that the recent "odd job" they'd been sent to do was a success contributed to him exuding confidence, Baba can not but be pleased, infact this job would probably land them more contracts...Remi grinned to himself.
The Condo was tastefully furnished, something worthy of an aspiring President and also a former Head of State in Nigeria. A settee was placed facing a classy arrangement of electronics in the room, a stereo softly producing the sweet tunes of I.K Dairo, the television muted, making a mime of the gestures of the newscaster on screen. Two single sitter chairs of the same design and colour with the settee was placed at the left and right side of the latter while a round black shiny table regally manned the centre of all the other furniture. Bright coloured window blinds were clipped up to allow the evening sun filter into the room.
Rtd General Kayode Folayemi stepped into the room and Remi immediately rose to his feet, his young partner followed his movement awkwardly. "Weldone boys, I saw the news" the general's baritone was followed by Remi's excited chatter "Baba! We tell you say we dey capable! E no take us long to plan the thing and burn the whole place down, I even think say na one big place before, ìyen kéré gan...walahi! The one wey pass that one sef, kò fún wa ní problem......." Gen Kayode smoothly interrupted him "I see....so is this one of your co-workers?" He pointed to the mute guy who was obviously in discomfort. "Na one of the boys wey we just dey train!" How are you young man?" The guy looked up and managed to stammer an unstable "I'm fine" Gen. Kayode grinned and turned back to Remi "So, I guess you're expecting your balance now right?" Without waiting for Remi's answer he pushed a suitcase towards him, Remi opened and the naira notes neatly arranged in the suitcase brought a smile to his lips, he passed on the suitcase to his partner, made some hailing noises for the general and walked out of the room. They couldn't have walked ten steps when two gunshots sounded, Gen. Kayode leaned back in his seat at the sound and turned up the volume of his T.V set, smiling with satisfaction as the voice of the newscaster droned on about the now famous crime of arson in Ikorodu, it was obvious that Remi and his cohorts did the job well....it's a pity that he couldn't be kept alive for other jobs, he knew too much secrets already and the general couldn't afford to have that kind of person living, with the elections just a few months away.
***********************************************************************
Something snapped inside Delani, it was like the crack of a whip or the flash of a thunder. It took away his fear entirely and replaced it with a surge of strength and a fresh determination to make the assasins pay! The blood rush went into his head and Delani forgot everything! His name, age, personality, Family, address, none of all that mattered to him anymore....only one word stayed with him, fueling his adrenaline, continually repeating in his head like the ringing of a church bell "Virgo! Virgo! Virgo!". It was like a trance, that carried with it a huge touch of violence.
The boss of the assasins called them away from their cruel mockery of Delani with a sharp voice "It's ok guys, this isn't a joke, it's business!" "Alright boss" they called back at the leader who was looking intently at Delani. The man in white shirt gave Delani a hard smack on his head as he rose from his squatting position "You shouldn't have done that" Delani said through gritted teeth. The white shirt turned back to Delani in surprise "What did you say just now?" "I said you shouldn't have hit my head, now you've gone and done it and you're all going to pay big time!" Delani's voice was loud enough for all three to clearly hear him, the reaction of the guy in white shirt; who was the closest to him was to approach in anger, with the thoughts of teaching him a bitter lesson. Delani calmly watched white shirt's approach and clutched his hands on the objects he's picked off the shop's floor.
It all played out like slow motion to Delani, the guy extended his right hand to smack Delani once again but he met the movement of white shirt's hand by smartly ducking and then hitting the crowbar he's clutched in his right hand against the guy's wrist. A piercing screech of agony filled the air, underscored by the horrid sound of cracking bone. Before the other guys could make a move, Delani followed up with an upper cut movement of his left hand, stabbing white shirt's neck with the screwdriver he'd picked from the floor of the mechanic shop. A squirt of blood spurted from the guy's neck, spraying Delani's face and the front of his shirt with the red liquid. The guy in jean had immediately pulled out his pistol, a baretta model, shooting nervously at Delani, who quickly blocked the bullets with white shirt's bigger body, and with his hind vision he caught the leader's movement as he was running in to attack from the back, Delani immediately swung into action, he jerked white shirt's gun out of his nerveless grip as the dead man was still holding on lifelessly to his weapon, smartly aimed the gun at Jean guy and fired two quick shots from behind his shield of white shirt's body, he quickly dived away from behind white shirt's dead body, and the limp body immediately dropped to the floor, the thud sound of his fall was completely drowned by the high pitched screams from the jean guy, who now had two holes gushing blood in his chest from the bullets' entry. The leader's one time shot missed Delani by a wide mile because of his dive away from his former position. "Who the hell are you!!!!" The leader screamed, trepidation clouding his voice, he pointed his gun steadily at Delani and his eyes took a quick dart at the jean guy whose screams are dying rapidly as his life slowly ebbs away.
Delani rose regally to his feet and raised his now weaponless hands in the air, confidence and cockiness in his stance as he fixed his gaze on the leader....."I'm going to make you pay!" The leader said, his voice clouded with emotions of pain and anger. "On your knees boy! I'll kill you sooo slowly with great pain! You should just have taken the easy death, one bullet and it's done but you've earned the painful way now!" Delani didn't utter a word and demurely went to his knees, he felt no fear as his eyes darted round the blood-smeared shop, the two dead bodies and back to the approaching nozzle of the gun from behind which an angry face stared him down. He took a deep breath, closed his eyes and relaxed, to anyone he looked like a person who has resigned to his fate but Delani was mentally counting the footsteps of the leader when the man was a footstep to him, he swung out his right foot and caught the leader at his heels, the man figured out Delani's move too late and pulled the trigger, the bullet missed Delani by a hairsbreadth through pure luck, the leader went down heavily from Delani's kick and speedily turned it into a smart roll he came back to his feet still clutching his gun. He released another round of shooting at Delani who quickly went into a crouch, the fired b

who quickly went into a crouch, the fired bullets hitting the walls in showering sounds.
Delani's crouch allowed him to pick up white shirt's gun which he'd lost earlier, he immediately pulled the trigger and the impact of the bullet made th 9ke leader jerk and he crumpled with pain....Delani immediately stood and walked towards the man who was now writhing in pain "Who are you?" The leader asked with a painful voice, his pupils were dilated, mouth twisted in agony as a pool of blood continued to spread around him, his black suit already tinted with red colour "Who the Bleep are you!?" he asked once more, a sardonic spread across Delani's young face, changing the handsome features into a monster-look "I am Virgo! And nobody messes with me!" "Impossible!" the man gasped, "You caa...an't be..be Virgo!" His hands followed his confused words with confused gestures "Virgo...it was Virgo that...that se....sent u......s" "What are you saying?" Delani asked as he knelt to hear the man better, the leader gave one more gasp and went silent, Delani held the man by his suit lapels and shook him vigorously "Talk to mee! Talk to mee!" The sound of sirens pierced the air......................

He jerked awake, sweat covered him entirely, he checked to see if he'd forgotten to open the louvres, but they were all set open to allow adequate ventilation in the room. Delani buried his face in his hands.. he's had the godforsaken nightmare again! Or was it really a nightmare? If you dream about something that really happened, in exact details of how it happened can it be called a nightmare? He'd barely escaped on that day, the police should surely have caught him but a devilish luck had shined on him. He had jumped out of the shop through the window and had taken a route previously unknown to him to the house. He'd only returned to himself after he slept that day, who was that monster? Who was that killing machine that took over his being last Thursday? He slumped into his bed and buried his face in the pillow, the news had come out the next day, he'd heard guys talking about it in school they were saying the report was a robbery that didn't go as planned, but Delani knew it was no robbery but he dare not tell his story to anyone. He had committed murder! Killed three able bodied men who were trained to kill, "No that wasn't me!" Delani mumbled to himself in the dark room "that was another man, another being!" He went into deep racking sobs, he had left Osun to come and get education and make the best of his life here in Lagos, and he'd gone on to commit murder! Multiple murder! Delani's sobs continued softly through the night till the early morning when his alarm alerted him to get ready for school he rose painfully from his bed, black shadows. under his red sleepless eyes with a question in his mind "What happened to me on that day?"

Detective Martin walked into the lobby of the hotel, roaming his gaze all around the tasteful decorations and bobbing his head up and down in concealed appreciation of the beauty and quality of the hotel. He was flanked by two of his assistants and they were all in casual wears because officers in uniform would have caused some level of commotion amoung customers and the hotel manager had convinced Martin's bosses about how that would not augur well for both the police force in their investigation and the hotel in their business.
Martin shrugged, naturally, he hated being manipulated by these so called influential people, but he had not protested because there was reason in not coming here in full armour, In fact he would have done the same thing without the hotel's interference. He took measured strides in approaching the big, classy reception desk, behind which two beautiful ladies continually flash their model white teeth at customers. Martin walked up them, his company closely behind him. "Good morning Sirs and ma and welcome to The Solace Suites!" the receptionists greeted simultaneously in smooth sonorous voices. "Good morning" Martin muttered in reply "How can I help you Sir? We have different types of accommodation with different grades at affordable pri...." "Sorry madam" Martin softened his interruption with a wide smile. "We're not customers ma'am, I'm Detective Martin Ekeh, can we see the manager please?" He said, pulling out his identity and holding it under the lady's nose for her to see clearly. Martin could sense the lady's demeanor changing immediately, her friendly smile dropped, replaced with a cold stare "Any previously fixed appointment?" Martin was getting a little peeved with her actions but he kept the smooth smile pasted to his face "Put a call through to him, he would decide if he would like to see us" the lady snorted softly in derision and pulled the phone towards her to make her call, the reply she received after she mentioned Detective Martin's name was clearly not pleasing to her, judging by her scrunched up face and disappointed sigh. She dropped the receiver "He's coming downstairs to pick you" Martin's made his grin wider and gave a thumbs up to the lady "We really appreciate your help ma'am, it's obvious that you're the best of receptionists" he could sense his assistants holding their mirth in so as not to burst out laughing and he picked a twenty naira note from his shirt pocket and dropped it on the table "You deserve tips like that and more" Martin turned smartly to pick a seat in the reception arena, his assistants followed suit.

Episode Three: The Identity (Innocence and Evil)

Flashback: September 1998

Essien relaxed in the uncomfortable hospital seat at the reception, impatiently waiting for his turn to see the doctor. He's finally suceeded in his plans, infact he had surpassed the target he set for himself. He'd played the dangerous games, mingled with the underworld, involved in criminal activities, escaped death through sheer luck, just to raise the fifty-eight thousand naira he needed for his sister's treatment and he surpassed the target price times six......but at a great cost and almost at the loss of his life. Lagos is hard! Sometimes he feels like giving up and returning to Calabar with Adaobi, but that would mean failure and his father and friends would not fail to rub it in every single day, he would live a life even more worse than that of Lagos at Calabar now, everyday would be full of shame and dejection. He would surely return, but only after Adaobi gets better and he makes some millions out of the smart investments he plans to make with the rest of the money. He's going to return to that damned village a millionaire! The youngest millionaire, Nooooo....the ONLY millionaire in their entire godforsaken history! The fingers of his right hand grazed over the compact suitcase by his side in a soft caress, memories of how he had gotten the money came back to him and a wave of shame and guilty conscience washed over him, but he quickly pushed that away, convincing himself that he had no choice....life thrives on the jungle rule and only the strongest and smartest survive.
The death of Remi saddened him, though Essien believed Remi's overconfidence and stupidity had played a huge part in his death and to be factual, Remi's death and his own survival had meant more money for him.
Those bastard Yoruba politicians are never to be trusted! Essien knew and he never felt comfortable with going to the general's house to get paid for the job. They had given their best for the job, the process of infiltrating the warehouse which was heavily guarded and setting fire to place was an ardous task, and then the extra care and intelligence they had to apply to be get out unnoticed by the security cameras, the well trained guards and the ferocious dogs. If they'd been caught, that would have been the end of their lives. Remi had to do a lot of work to convince Essien to partner him on the job and Essien would never have taken him up on the offer if there was any other choice to make the quick cash needed urgently for his sister's ailment. They'd succeeded, surprisingly, got the warehouse on fire, even without knowing you it's contents, they didn't care anyway...they fufilled their part of the contract and were invited by Gen. Kayode Folayemi to his secret condo in a remote area. Remi was confident, too confident because he's been working with the general before, his over familiarity and elation at being successful in such a dangerous mission clouded his sixth sense, but Essien's instincts sirened danger throughout their arrival and converse with the general. He was too smooth, too slick that Essien couldn't trust him from the onset of the deal. The man had given them the money and bid them farewell, not taking the courtesy of seeing them off, that had switched Essien's radar on, he'd remembered the man claiming boastfully to be a stickler for the ethics of being hospitable and playing the perfect host to all kinds of visitors the first time they'd met, and the general of course accompanied them for a considerable distance on that day. Essien's observance made him extra wary as they leave the house, but his wariness would never have been enough to save him if not for a slight stumble that made the sniper shot hit him at the shoulder instead of headshot which was the shooter's aim. Remi had died instantly, as he was less lucky and the bullet found his brains. Essien had escaped into the nearby forest where he hid from the frantic search of the general's boys for days, it was the knowledge of herbs that he'd gained from his late mother that had helped him in treatment of the gun wound. He'd had to fake a death with a blood trail to the river to set things up as if he'd drowned before the goons gave up the search and he found a way out of the forest.
"Mr Essien! The doctor is ready to see you" Essien broke out of his reverie, picked up the compact suitcase and marched towards the doctor's door with an hundred watt smile...As from now on, for him and Adaobi life is gonna be good! His smile even increased the more as he knocked on the door.

Aisha hummed a happy tune as she diced onions in the kitchen, she loves cooking unlike most twenty-first century ladies who consider the process of cooking an arduos task. Local meals, foreign cuisines she loved the idea of learning how to work magic with utensils in her kitchen, she'd told her fiance before they got married that one thing she expects in their house must be a state of the art kitchen in which she can freely express her culinary creativity. She'd learned to make most indigenous yoruba meals from her mother who is a kitchen mage herself. Her mother had been a total Ekiti lady and she'd married an Osun man....so from the vintage pounded yam to the èko, everything was possible for her mum in the kitchen, she has always emphasized to Aisha the need to use her kitchen prowess to keep the husband under her spell. Aisha took this very important and she had to learn how to cook new foods entirely since her husband turned out to be from the East.
The sound of the front door opening made her clean her hands quickly on a napkin and step towards the kitchen doorway to stare at her kid brother as he entered the house on his return from school. She smiled as she appraised the kid with her eyes roaming over him affectionately, and she was proud of what she saw; he has the classic handsome features that runs in the family and he was at the gangly stage where he's as tall as Aisha but quite thin and there's a certain natural swagger to his movement that come with the confident state of Teenagers. Aisha slightly chuckled to herself as she made up her mind to tease him about his lady friends, especially Dora, she's noticed that he has a special liking to Dora from the way he's always been crooning Dora this, Dora that throughout last month, but she noticed that he hadn't talked about his pretty classmate recently, in fact, he has hardly opened up in like a week. A frown pulled at Aisha's brows as she goes through the young boy's mannerisms in the last few days, he's been acting weird, locking himself up for hours, eating very little, he's also not hung out with his neighborhood friends.
The boy in question shut the main door and walked past Aisha without even acknowledging her. Aisha got angry and pulled the boy's backpack....."Delani! What's gotten into you these days, how can you pass me by without even greeting? What has come over you? You don't eat, you lock yourself up for hours, I checked your room this morning and it was in disarray!" "You checked my room without my permission or presence? That is trespassing Sister, and you know it!" Delani shouted at the top of his voice. Aisha was taken aback, her mouth slightly hung open in surprise "Adepoju Adelani! Are you in your right senses?" Aisha shouted, "Yes I am!" Delani replied rudely "I should ask you that question Sister, why would go in to my room? You poke nose into things that're not of your concern, you're......" A resounding slap stopped Delani's flow of words, he was shell- shocked into silence and his eyes went wide, he'd never been slapped by his big sister, she has her several ways of instilling discipline in him but it's never been physical. Sadness filled his soul, tears welled in his eyes, but his teenage pride couldn't allow him let his Sister see how hurt he was, he turned from her and stomped away towards his room.
Aisha walked back unsteadily into the kitchen, her previous joy of cooking now forgotten. She was confused because this wasn't her brother! This wasn't the gentle, easygoing and respectful Delani who's lived with he
