ChinenyeN: The Igbo you hear people speak in many areas around Imo and Anambra are not actually the peoples dialect but a centralised form of Igbo with little surviving part of their actual dialect. The actual dialects are strange and little is remembered about them. The reason is because they are more travelled and prefer a language they can communicate with every other Igbo. |

ChinenyeN: An example is the Orsu dialect. The pure form has died long ago but some older people speak a blend which differs greatly from standard Igbo.I will give you some excerpts. Orsu You are lying -I n'eghe egheleghe How many years -Awho nele Its true- O wu nne Ignore him- Kwuru ya odu Come here- bere ibe Standard Igbo You are lying- I n'atu ashi How many years- Afo Ole Its true- O bu eziokwu Ignore him- Gbachi ya nkiti. Come here- Bia ebea The tone is also very different. |

I see. Kind of makes me wonder how much Ngwa has been eroded. Well, are there any tongues that have completely gone extinct (as in, there are no more surviving speakers of said tongues)? If there aren't, then in your opinion, Abagworo, based off your experience, which tongues would you say are the most eroded? |
Re: Delta Igbo, Bendel Igbo: What Does That Even Mean. by chyz(m): 2:28am On Oct 19, 2010 |
ChinenyeN: From my experience Aba tongue may be the most eroded in igboland because everybody is there. However, the good thing about we igbos is we tend to have meetings and gatherings of clans in the diaspora so that preserves our clannish tongues better. We also tend to associate with our clans more that outside clan as well. |

i have often said, that most people on this internet group are not delta people ,but pretenders who have left their on cultural areas with their myriad problems to talk about issues they know little about.ukwani and ndokwa is not ika in delta.there are only two local govt.areas in delta that are ika ,and the other ika people are in edo state. agbor is headquarter for ika south ,while owa is the headquarters for ika north east. i am from owa ,and my ancestors where kings of owa , ia ma not from umunede , and to give you a little history in ika history ,umunede was formerly called and known as UKPEHORO kingdom, does that not sound bini to you ? agbor was called ogungunagbon or agbon -which means earth in bini language and before that time agbor was called igidi and before then agbor was called ominijie, while abavo was avbavbo a bini prince. for those who do not know chibuzor is not an ika name . it is an igbo name, our people were subjected to lots of igbo influence during the colonial era ,due to the fact that the early educated people that came with the europeans were from igbo cultural areas, so they influenced the ikas a lot .and due to the fact that our neighbouring towns (idogbo),like asaba, ogwashi, ubuluku and others have interracted with us for long , so gradually most ikas began changing certain things like evolution in the language and some cultural practices ,but thank god this is being halted . so most cases the modern ika people tend to name their children with names that does not reflect ika language and culture , presently i am writing a book called 500 ika names. where i spelt out rules about naming ika children and names that constitute ika names and those that does not constitute ika names. examples . 1. ikas do not belief in chi as guardian spirit as the igbos do , but we believe in ehi as our guardian spirit. so chinedu is not an ika name , but you can have ikas bearing it .but the name in ika should be ehiedu ,while chioma in igbo is ehioma in ika.- my personal god is good. 2. ehiabor - GOds blessing. 3. ehiobu - god of the priest. 4, ehiwuogun - GOd is my medicine or charm. 5. awunli - means hapiness in igbo language but this is not an ika name , in ika it is called oghogho - happiness. 6.ebele -means mercy in igbo language , but in proper ika language it is called omiken . the good book said my people perish because of lack of knowledge , so we are educating most ikas about who they are with the different ika language and culture committes and the prime ika socio-cultural organisation called ogwa and onu ika .so that they wont be adopting a forign culture and be tagging it ika culture. having said this , it makes me laugh when some people on this group will insult ika people and expect me not to insult their igbo tribe.people should learn to show respect to others so that others can show respect to them , but trying to use number to scare me will not work. to answer the question dein was the title of the first king of agbor ,when this present dynasty started ,it was later changed to obi and the present king changed it back to dein.before this the rulers of agbor were called ogele and after that ogiso ruled agbor for one thousand years and later we had the dein/obi dynasty. ikas use different or multiples words for king like ogiso, obi, eze, oba, all these words means king, an example is one of uncles name is obawunje ,he is 92 years old now , the meaning of the name is the king owns the dance.there are titles like dein wuyi in agbor kingdom. for those who say ikas have not produced president of nigeria , what is their business and how many president has a dominant group like igbo produced for nigeria , it shows how trivial some people can be , nigeria has over 300 ethnic groups and so how many of these groups will produce presidents in a space of 300 years of nigerias existence and we are just 50 years old as a nation , how many presidents have igbiras produced ? binis ? ishan? uhrobhos? ijaws? i am ika and i do not have any appology to give to any one .every one should be free to say who they are and if 99 percent of ikas have said they are ika ,so why do i have to worry myself if one percent of ikas say they are igbo. |
Re: Delta Igbo, Bendel Igbo: What Does That Even Mean. by chyz(m): 4:19pm On Oct 19, 2010 |
agbotaen: If true what was the language of the "ika" people before the influence of the Igbos? Also 99% of Aro say they are Aro, 99%of Mbaise say they are Mbaise, 99% of Ezza say they are Ezza, 99% of Ngwa say they are Ngwa, 99% of Ukwuani say they are Ukwuani, 99% of Orsu say they are Orsu so what is your point?. The only 1% of ika that say they are igbo is in your dreams. Also you lie about what happiness means in Ika. It is the say as in other igbo parts Happiness is Oghogho in Urhobo not Ika you damn liar. Also all of those ehi-names are all dialectical names. Chioma is an ika name too not just for other igbo clans. Bini Bini Bini, every second.LOL. They dont accept you neither do they like you. Do you know what is going on with your igbo brothers from igbanke in Edo state? The say bini hate them and that they will never see them as bro/sis or Edo/Bini. They are crying to be let into anioma state. I find it hypocritical for you to ask for respect we you constantly and clannish and disrespect other igbo clans. When you learn to stop your disrespect then you will get respect. Also, stop preaching about so-called history, we all have our own history, we all have our own dialects, and their all various words for God in the igbo language so save all of that nonsense. |

Re: Delta Igbo, Bendel Igbo: What Does That Even Mean. by Abagworo(m): 12:06am On Oct 20, 2010 |
@Agbotaen.Igbos did influence your dialect just the way they influenced every other part of Igboland. In Igboland Chi has many synonyms like orisa, olisa, osa, ose, olise, obasi, abiama.Hence Chineke,Chiokike,Chikeruwa,Orisaburuwa,Osebuluwa,Osabuwa,Obasibinigwe. They mean God the creator. That's why names vary like Chikwe,Osakwe,Orisakwe,Olisakwe.Yours will be Ehikwe. That "kwe" makes it Igbo.As for "oghogho" Igbos in the east also use "Oghnughnu" or "Oghnu" for "Happiness". Ika has been thoroughly studied and confirmed Igbo by linguists. You and I are not linguists but I hear Igbo in every Ika spoken. What you need to understand is to pay a visit to Abakaliki,Nsukka or Abiriba and you will be convinced that you are linguistically the western end of thesame people. |
Re: Delta Igbo, Bendel Igbo: What Does That Even Mean. by ChinenyeN(m): 12:35am On Oct 20, 2010 |
Chyz, I doubt diapora meetings are that effective. |
Re: Delta Igbo, Bendel Igbo: What Does That Even Mean. by chyz(m): 1:24am On Oct 20, 2010 |
ChinenyeN: true.however, its not just the meetings. clans tend to stick around each other and do everything together. Its the interaction that keeps the "lect" going. I rarely(really rarely) see my folks interacting with those outside of their clans. Mostly because they knew each other back in nigeria or through introductions at sunday meetings. The last time i was in Imo i heard a couple times people saying "dalu". Dalu is not an Imo word at all most who havent travel outside of Imo would not know what it means but since people are traveling to work in places like Onitsha or Nnewi they bring back those non-indigenous words. Lots of igbo is being mixed i even know in mbaise the original word for God the Creater is "Chileke" but both that and "chineke" is used at regularly. Also, they say "la" and "na regularly as well but of course "la" seems to be the indigenous one. |
Re: Delta Igbo, Bendel Igbo: What Does That Even Mean. by ChinenyeN(m): 2:10am On Oct 20, 2010 |
Yeah, that makes sense. I agree, but I feel that a more concrete approach would be much more effective. |
Re: Delta Igbo, Bendel Igbo: What Does That Even Mean. by chyz(m): 2:33am On Oct 20, 2010 |
ChinenyeN: I feel you, the proposal we discussed in the Extent of Ala Igbo about the provinces, definitely could have checked a lot of these issues and the preservation of indigenous tongues being taught in schools.Unfortunately nigeria that we know who today is not structured that way. |
Re: Delta Igbo, Bendel Igbo: What Does That Even Mean. by ChinenyeN(m): 4:03am On Oct 20, 2010 |
That's very true. So, once again, it's up to the clans to make efforts to preserve their clan tongues. |
Re: Delta Igbo, Bendel Igbo: What Does That Even Mean. by asha80(m): 11:01am On Oct 20, 2010 |
ChinenyeN: Quite difficult to do in the circumstances prevailing now |
Re: Delta Igbo, Bendel Igbo: What Does That Even Mean. by AndreUweh(m): 11:08am On Oct 20, 2010 |
What the clans are doing is to evolve a standard Igbo that can enable them interact with over 40 million Igbo people. |
Re: Delta Igbo, Bendel Igbo: What Does That Even Mean. by asha80(m): 11:28am On Oct 20, 2010 |
Andre Uweh: Andre you don come again which dekiberate actions are they taken |
Re: Delta Igbo, Bendel Igbo: What Does That Even Mean. by ChinenyeN(m): 12:38pm On Oct 20, 2010 |
asha 80:True. Makes the whole thing seem hopeless & times. Preservation alone is difficult, talk less of actual development of the lexicon. Andre Uweh:The only standard[s] being 'evolved' are the ones that some small committee of people agree upon, during closed-door meetings, which the rest of us wouldn't even give a crumb of ji for. So no, there are not inter-clan efforts to evolve a 'standard Igbo', if anything I'd say that the only evolutions occurring are the circumstantial general Igbo that is rearing its head, along with the different 'street Igbo' that I hear about in different cities. |
Re: Delta Igbo, Bendel Igbo: What Does That Even Mean. by AndreUweh(m): 10:27pm On Oct 20, 2010 |
Abagworo:Well done ABAGWORO. That kid will not learn. Any way, the lil nigger now says Owa and Agbor are not Igbo. At a time, his message was ''we Ika are not Igbo''. I as a member of an Igbo association in the United Kindom was part of a team that Visited Obi of Owa in South West London this summer. The elated Obi spoke about promoting Igbo culture in diaspora. We visited him because he is an Igbo monarch. We have also visited some other Igbo monarchs who were in London this year, e.g Eze of Umuoma in Ihitte/Uboma LGA, Imo state. Only last Saturday 16/10/10 at Iri Ji festival in London, members of Ika Town Union were with us to celebrate the festival. One of our biggest supporters for this year's festival is no other person than the president of Ika Town Union. Ika people are proud Igbo people, that brain dead monkey who disagress should go and hang. |
