My practical advice for u is this:GET BUSY... get neck deep in something else.. Something u like... Something u have some passion for... It may work for u cos it worked for me. I was once had an addiction I couldn't recover from despite all attempts. But when I got busy with something else I had passion for I channeled all my passion for my addiction into my new hobby and honestly I overcame my addiction without any struggle cos it hardly even crossed my mind.

So what's the way out? What else do u have some passion for? Even if the passion isn't so great initially, fuel it up till it starves ur addiction for virtual. U may even start a trade, a business, a sport... Just make sure u feed it with all ur passion... Gradually ull subconsciously eliminate the thought for ur current addiction.

PLUS surround urself with people with same passion. I sincerely pray it helps... I feel for u. Don't give up. Your mind is stronger than u think

I think most people here don't understand what addiction to gambling really means. I have been there and can tell you there is not one particular way to avoid it, all you have to do is pray and find something that preoccupies and take away your time. Back in the uni, a friend came to bet9ja shop with 2,000. He played virtual till he had only #50 remaining.

Stopping it is all about determination, I remembered last semester I decided to stop virtual betting,

firstly I calculated the money I have lost since I started playing it

Secondly I was determined to stop it,( no light issue was the main reason I usually go there) when ever I am going there to charge my phone, I will just take 1k(just to see if the addict was still in me) and leave my house and still comeback with the 1k, I did it continuously for 1wk and it paid off, I kept going there to charge my phone , I later reduced the money to 5h then to 2h (I stopped playing virtual betting with 3wks of self rehabilitation and I am glad it paid off)

Dear Hardlife, this thread have gotten to page 15 and i know you must have gotten a lot of advises, i just want to chip in because of my own life experience too.

I graduated from public Sec school in '09 with a very good Waec result, passed jamb the following year and gained admission into UI.
I think my problem started when i questioned many things wrong with Nigeria and being that i was a science student i thought studying abroad will improve me. So i was obsessed about going abroad after my sec school, but couldn't find a way. 1st year in school i had 2.2/7.0 gpa, despite being a brilliant student in sec school and i lost because i don't think i will ever make first class.

2nd year in school, my older cousins started talking about how easy it is going abroad, so luckily i found US thread on nairaland, where i got a list of things i needed. Despite my cousins warning me that even though i am processing traveling i shouldn't neglect my school here for now. They didn't know my gpa, they thought my cgpa is very good because i didn't tell them. In my mind i have zeroed UI, the US rejected me twice, and i had to remain in UI with a very low cgpa. I pushed it till 500L till i gave up. Mom taught i will be serving that year 2015. When i told her about extra year and so many carry overs i had, she burst into tears. My father had died earlier that year.

When it was time to go for extra year, i told her i couldn't do it.
But she was adamant that i get a degree, so i took jamb last year after wasting 8 YEARS. Now i am in another federal university in southwest, and i am trying my best to do well this time around. A female classmate of mine in sec school saw me in school the other day and ask what i am doing in her school, that am i here for my Masters or Ph.D? When i got home i couldn't cry, see the level this girl rated me not knowing i just started 100 level.


Sometimes i feel depressed and have suicide thoughts but the pains i will cause my mom after loosing a first son and husband keeps me in check, and also hope that i would one day have children that i will train and achieve what i couldn't (because i know i can't really make a difference in life again).

Also my dad founded a church before he died, and along the line i started teaching these kids in children class, and they love my teachings and look up to me. I love these kids and they are also part of what keeps me going in this life.

Growing up i never thought i could find myself in this mess, seems like a dream but it's real and torturing.
