EDO Nuj Begs Governor Obaseki For Bailout
The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ in Edo state has again appealed for a financial bailout from the Edo state government.

The bailout if approved will enable it pay 3years arrears of workers’ salaries, pay N3-million Electricity bills, renovate the aging Press Centre and attend the National delegates conference at Abeokuta, Ogun state in October this year.

The appeal was one of many resolutions of the Union’s State executive council/ Central working committee meeting held on Monday night at the Press centre and presided over by Mr Roland Osakue, its chairman.

The Edo NUJ which is supposed to be one of the most viable in the country has a premises with a conference hall, a guest house, assorted shops and drinking spots, income from which can make it financially buoyant, but the proceeds are grossly mismanaged by its elected leaders.

It is on record that the Union which has always gone cap in hand to the government for bail out in the past over the years ran into a management and financial turbulence due to a N5million fraud involving some of its top leaders.

The amount which is a subject of investigation by the EFCC was a parting gift for the Union from a former governor who is now the National chairman of the APC Mr Adams Oshiomhole.

The money was shared by only nine Correspondents, out of an estimated 300 members of the Union, who claimed to be Friends of Oshiomhole.

Edo state government has been wary of supporting the NUJ since Governor Godwin Obaseki assumed office because past bailouts have been pocketed by Union leaders.

Recently the government donated a fairly used diesel generator to the Union and has not activated it for close to a year now, because of lack of confidence in the NUJ leadership.
