Except there are new statements she made which I haven't seen, I follow her on twitter and to the best of my knowledge, Madam Oby did not say she wished for Nigeria Air to fail, bloggers probably gave that interpretation. What I understand she said was that there were certain 'very obvious' impeding factors in the Nigerian aviation sector which have always killed every effort to set up a successful national carrier. And that as long as those bottlenecks are not taken away FIRST, the government setting up a national carrier REMAINS an ill-though move which will eventually end in failure like the others before it.

While I do not fully agree with her, I thought it was necessary to clarify her real statements so we don't end up dedicating an entire thread discussing a misquoted statement.

They didn't read the whole post. They just took the headline and ran with it and started name-calling.

I wish people would stop focusing on motive, and focus on instead on issues. We have a lot of priorities as a Nation. #NotNationalAirline should not be one them.

Praying that it fails is not productive - and it is alienating the folks on the other side of the argument.

Let's focus the conversation on the merit of starting a National Airline in the midst of competing priorities.

I agree that those calling for the Airline to fail are taking it a step too far but do you see the value in that approach - it is getting you to consider why they would take such a bold step to pray for the failure of a project in a country we love. Sadly, that's the only way to get people's attention on social media nowadays.

Nevertheless, the main issue here is that there's a trend of mismanagement and history of failed attempts at a National Carrier. Those issues have not been fixed, and we have a lot more pressing issues to resolve. Surely we should all be screaming: #NotNationalAirline

This right here is what a lot of Nigerians don't understand or refuse to acknowledge. Just as Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP party were not Nigeria so also, is Buhari and the APC party not Nigeria. Nigeria is bigger than these entities and in hating or seeking to destroy any one of them, it will be good to always remember this.

Wow. My old buddy Rossikki pulls me out of retirement and an NL Hiatus of a few years. Buddy you are totally correct. I have experienced a lot in the past few years that shows black/African folks undermine themselves while the white world, devoted to moving forward through the Machiavellian manipulation of others, is always ready to take advantage of our disunity and primal dislike of each other over issues that should not be developmental deal-breakers (religion, ethnic origin, nation of origin etc).

Ezekwesili is an example of the many brilliant but ( eventually) jaded African technocrats who 'cut their teeth' and built a reputation in the West but, perhaps, patriotically, decided to help develop a home nation they love via contributing specialist skills they gained abroad in some of the best economies in the world. These people, unless highly pragmatic and adaptive, may eventually become unobjective, bitter and unproductive enemies of their home nation if things are not done how they dictate. Her and her ilk come with massive egos which means they can sometimes become an enemy of even the most laudable projects so far as they feel 'sidelined' or irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

Ezekwesili may now be an egotistic technocrat who is bitter because she, after many years abroad, does not want to accept that many factors, including a lot that is out of our control, combine to ensure Africa works differently. When I visited Japan I realised it was a different and very successful culture cultivated by intelligent people who are determined to do things their own way. Nigeria is similar. I personally was glad to read about Nigeria Air and I am hoping we make a success of it.
