Nigeria is indeed a blessed country, even though things seem not to be functioning properly.

There are quite a number of reasons not to be proud of Nigeria. However, this post is focused on 10 reasons why you should actually be proud to be Nigerian.

These 10 facts are not merely the basic facts about Nigeria, such as these:

Basic Facts About Nigeria
> Nigeria is a country in West Africa.

> There are over 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria.

> Nigeria is bordered by Benin Republic on the West, Niger Republic on the North, Chad on the North East, Cameroon on the East, and the Atlantic Ocean on the South.

> Nigeria has a population of more than 180 million.

> Nigeria has 36 States.

While all of the above are true, this post is focused on facts that will actually blow your mind, and make you proud to be a Nigerian.

So, here goes:

1. Nigeria is home to 7% of the total languages spoken on earth.

This is definitely a fact to be proud of as a Nigerian. Taraba State alone has more languages than 30 African countries. This could make Nigeria the greatest hub of cultural tourism in the world. It is a pity that it has been causing division among Nigerians.

2. The Yoruba has the highest rate of twin births in the world.

So many people would love to have twins as kids. There is a particular town in Oyo State which boasts of having about 158 twins per 1,000 births. This town, Igbo-Ora, has been nicknamed the Twin Capital of the World.


3. Nigeria houses the largest single Pre-Colonial Monument in Africa.

The largest pre-colonial monument in Africa is located in Nigeria. This ancient fortification, known as Sungbo's Eredo, is located in the present day Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State. It is a 160km rampart equipped with guard houses and moats.


4. Africa's oldest known Canoe was discovered in Nigeria.

The oldest known canoe in Africa was discovered by a Fulani Herdsman around Dufuna village, Yobe State, in May, 1987. Radio-carbon tests carried out on the canoe indicated that it was over 8,000 years old, making it the oldest in Africa, and third oldest in the world.


5. The only Ruler who resisted control by Songhai, was a Nigerian.

Songhai was West Africa's greatest empire of its time. Sarki Muhammad Kanta The Great of Kebbi was the only ruler who resisted control by this great empire. Kanta built Surame as the capital of Kebbi. This city was almost impossible to penetrate during war.

6. There are over 150 regional 'kings' in Nigeria.

One of them used to be a Professor Emeritus at University of North Carolina.

7. Nigeria is the second largest market for Guinness consumption in the world.

Apparently, Nigerians are heavy Guinness consumers, surpassing Ireland to take second place in Guinness consumption in the late 2000s.


8. Nigeria is one of the most ecologically vibrant places on Earth.

In Nigeria alone, there are about 4,715 different plant species, as well as more than 550 breeding bird and mammal species.

9. The Niger Delta is the second largest Delta on Earth.

The Niger Delta in Nigeria is where the Niger River empties into the Atlantic Ocean. It is the second largest delta in the world. It has the highest concentration of monotypic fish families in the world.


10. The Anambra Waxbill is found only in Southern Nigeria.

The Anambra Waxbill is a bird of many colours, found only in Nigeria and nowhere else on earth.

We might not be where we all proposed in our hearts as Nigerian but I AM PROUD OF MY COUNTRY.
