The deposed Deji of Akure, Oba Oluwadare Adesina, has challenged his deposition by the Ondo State Government before an Akure High Court and demanded N10bn as damages.

The suit, with reference number AK 443/2010, was filed by the erstwhile monarch through his counsel, Messrs Sola Oke, on Monday.

Listed as defendants are: Governor Olusegun Mimiko, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Diran Iyantan; Secretary to the Akure South Local Government Area; and the Akure kingmakers.

The suit was the second in the week as the deposed monarch had on Monday, filed a suit against the state government, the Nigeria Police, and the State Security Service, to stop his proposed arraignment in court.

Adesina, in the latest suit, described his deposition, arrest, and banishment by the government as a punitive measure following the domestic violence with his wife.

He also described his dethronement as unconstitutional and illegal.

The erstwhile monarch, therefore, asked the court to award N10bn to him as damages against the state government for the “unlawful, wrongful, illegal and unconstitutional deposition and banishment.”

Adesina sought among other reliefs, the setting aside of his ‘purported deposition,’ his immediate reinstatement as the Deji and an order stopping the defendants from appointing a regent for the town.

In the affidavit to support his suit, Adesina said he did not physically touch his estranged wife during the domestic violence between them.

He also said that the 141, Hospital Road residence, where his estranged wife was battered, was not her father’s house but the apartment he rented nine years ago.

He noted that the appointment of a regent when he was still alive was against the tradition and customs of Akure and that doing that would put his life in danger.

According to him, “To be appointed as a Deji, one of the rites to be performed is the climbing of Okiti-Omolore. The Deji-elect will climb the said Okiti-Omolore with one of his daughters, who will be a regent when the Deji eventually passes on.

“The applicant, Adesina Adepoju, actually mounted the Okiti-Olomore with his daughter, Princess Adetola Adesina. In the native law and customs of Akure, there is no provision for the appointment of a regent whilst the Oba is still alive.

“The appointment of a regent whilst the applicant is still alive is injurious to his life and that of his daughter as this will ultimately lead to their death having stepped to a spiritual communion.”

He also added, “That the defendants’ decision banishing the plaintiff from Akureland and into and/or any place without following the intent and spirit of the provisions of the Chiefs Edict 1984 as amended and the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria is unlawful, unreasonable, unjustifiable, illegal and unconstitutional.”

The deposed monarch said the reliance on reports from newspapers, security agencies, well-meaning Akure citizens, the State Council of Obas and women rights groups without giving him the opportunity to defend himself was unconstitutional.

Consequently, he prayed for orders setting aside the deposition and banishment and re-installing him as the Deji of Akure.

Adesina’s counsel also noted with concern that the state government had been frustrating his efforts to see the deposed monarch where he was banished to at the Government Reserved Area in Owo town.

The state Chief Judge, Justice Gladys Olateru-Olagbegi, has not allocated the case for hearing.

I don't really understand. Fighting back as in: he wanna raise the money to pay his wife? If that's the case, I wish him luck anyway, but that's a very weak move, the cry of a defeated man.

Issue of jeopardizing his life as he claims, mehn, the man is a great joker. Haven't he heard this adage: it's better for a man to die for people than people dying for one man.

People of Akure should sacrifice the man to their oracle to appease the gods. Lol

I think it will be wise if the animal is just killed to preserve his daughter's life since they performed the ritual of crowning a new Oba together. So that, she is not affected by her father's misdeed.

And as for demanding for 10 Billion compensation, i wouldn't blame the retard since he is a block head, but will blame the supposed learned lawyer who was so foolish to actually file the case in court.

No. The lawyer/Solicitor, is smarter than you think. He is getting paid for his services, no matter how ridiculous the claims may be. He is providing a service. There are more ridiculous cases than this being filed across courts in the world.

A known legal joker, once filed lawsuits against David Beckham for "having forces that defy science in his legs when he plays freekick". You can look this up. smiley

WTF is wrong with that goat? Even if you rented the house with your god-forsaken money, does thet give you the authority to go and fight your wife publicly? I think the police should just lock up this man cos he is a threat to the society. A 1st class king beating his wife in public in the full glare of his subjects shocked shocked shocked!!! He is a disgrace to the Yoruba tradition that is highly regarded even by the whites.

WTF? This guy is damn near crazy. He assaulted his wife as though she was a farm animal and is now asking to be awarded N10bn in damages. If this was Law & Order SVU Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson would have his highness locked up by now.
Re: Deji Of Akure Fights Back : Demands N10b For Damages by alldone(m): 5:50pm On Jun 17, 2010
this is what happen when you dont handle somebody well. He should be tried for attemtend murder, let him face that and should be banished to the north for life. if this is done he will not have the got to talk anyhow let alone filling a court case. what rubbish?
Re: Deji Of Akure Fights Back : Demands N10b For Damages by tpiah: 5:55pm On Jun 17, 2010
instead of making this man king, akure kingmakers should have sent him back to school to get his GED [nigerian equivalent], then required him to go to a tertiary institution to further his education.

i think that would have benefitted akure more.

undecided undecided

This Deji, is a woman beater, an acid pourer, a tout, a thug a domestic abuser, and a public disgracer. I wonder why they still allow him to talk, he should be sent to jail right away. Imagine this man became the Deji through a wayo way and still cannot behave himself. God please come to Nigeria's aid and let all these bad luck people go.
Re: Deji Of Akure Fights Back : Demands N10b For Damages by yajebu: 9:30pm On Jun 17, 2010
Not his fault. No be GRA dem banish am to? Eh hen now, e go see lawyer talk to. If he had been banished to his natural habitat (the jungle) he would be more bothered about feeding. Those in GRA Owo had better be on the alert cos he might soon go on another rampage. Hopeless man!
