Human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, SAN, has criticised the Federal Government for allegedly not taking steps to end the extrajudicial killing of Nigerians in South Africa.

In a statement, Sunday, Falana said the government “has not gone beyond the regular condemnation” of the killings, while also accusing the South African government of inaction.
At least 121 Nigerians are reported to have been killed in South Africa in the past 18 months, usually in xenophobic attacks, the most recent being Chibuzo Nwankwo, who was murdered last week.
Falana said despite the killings, governments of Nigeria and South Africa have deliberately refused to accept the jurisdictional competence of the African court on human and people’s rights by making a declaration in line with article 34 (6) of the protocol for the establishment of the court.
The statement read: “Thus, by refusing to make the declaration, both countries have made it impossible for their nationals, whose human rights have been violated by state actors, to seek legal redress in the court.
“On its own part, the government of Nigeria has not gone beyond the regular condemnation of the brutal killings. Up till now, the government has not deemed it fit to take bold diplomatic measures to guarantee the security of the life and property of every Nigerian citizen living in South Africa.”
“However, the lackadaisical attitude of the Nigerian government to the brutalisation of Nigerian immigrants in South Africa is not surprising in view of the impotence of the state to curb the incessant killing of innocent citizens at home by terrorists, herders, armed robbers, kidnappers and other bandits.”
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria added that to stop the extrajudicial killings, government must “pressurise” the South African government to bring all culprits to book forthwith and compensate victims.
He urged the current administration to stop “exposing Nigeria to ridicule” by making the declaration to facilitate access to the African court without further delay.
“We are therefore compelled to call on the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights to conduct an enquiry into the killings of African immigrants in South Africa and make appropriate recommendations to the African Union,” he said.

As a SAN, you take delights in anything that pertains judiciary works

Buhari as an Ex-millitary general will equally take delight in seeing people dying

We can't really blame the old man

It's the nature of his work

He has to keep things professional

Look @ this once sane mind like Wole Soyinka, Prof. Sagay & Festus Keyamo who have traded their good conscience for political crumbs from a government under which human lives have become so worthless.

A Buhari that does nothing about gruesome killings back here in Nigeria (saying the "only options left now is to pray" & that his "service chiefs are racking their brain"wink is the one he expects to contain a jealous SA xenophobic killings
Charity starts from home. undecided undecided

Oboii it would have been an honor and legitimacy to Buhari for falana to serve in this govt as AG.

Just look at what u have as AG for nepotic reasons, MALAMI.

He specializes in bringing criminals like Minna back to govt instead of prosecuting them. He's one of the reasons that Nigerians make mockery of the anti-corruption campaign of this govt.

He specializes in loosing high profile corrupt cases because of no clear evidence in Court. This woman judge handling Dariye n Nyame cases are just saving his shame. Only God knows d kind of deal he entered with her. Look at Saraki, that every one knows how corrupt n ruthless he is. MALAMI cannot nail in court.

I watched him on a channel's program n totally felt pity for this govt n Buhari. He couldn't even properly encapsulate his thoughts on the legal basis of this govt actions. Participants that were not lawyers carried the day in that program, while he was busy babbling about.

All he's put his energy more on is making sure that huge commission were paid to his lawyer recruits in d repatriated Abacha loots.

I don't even wanna go into terrible legal advice he's given this govt that has failed woefully both home and abroad. And we lost so much time n resources in such cases

So guy park well n respect ur self OK?

Let's expect the Presidency to release the number of killings that occurred in the past administration to prove that more Nigerians were killed overseas during the past administration than what we have at present.

PMB cares less about the lives of Nigerians whether at home or abroad.

If that was how the US was complaining to every country that was a source of threat to the lives of its citizens, Washington would have been an extension of Iran, Russia or China by now.

He is acting as if the government didn't follow up on these so called attacks and find out they are crime related , either a nigerian criminal against a fellow nigerian criminal or a SA criminal vs naija criminal . He and other fools expect nigerian government to expel SA businesses doing legit things in naija because of foolish criminals who won't stop disgcracing our name all in the name of quick bucks undecided. Nonsense. We are living well in SA , the dodgy ones live like chicken because of their " work".
