In an interview with Dr. Akinpelu Gbegbin of Divine Grace Medical Hospital said lot of Nigerians suffers from asthma. Asthma is an inflammatory disease affecting the airways that carry air to and from the lungs. People who suffer from this chronic condition (long-lasting or recurrent) are said to be asthmatic.
Dr. Gbegbin, disclosed to eDokita team that Nigeria alone, 15 million suffers from the lung disease out of over 400 million others believed to be suffering from asthma worldwide.
He noted that asthma is the most common chronic disease in children; it is characterized by recurring respiratory systems such as coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and wheezing (a whistling or squeaky sound in your chest when you breathe, especially when exhaling).
“One of the challenges is that, many people do not know how to prevent the ailment. For the prevention, it is important to identify asthma triggers and take steps to avoid them. Some asthma triggers may include: air pollution, allergies, cold air, cold or flu virus, sinusitis, smoke, fragrances among others.”
He added that effective treatment of allergic asthma includes identifying and avoiding allergens that trigger symptoms, using drug therapies and developing an emergency action plan for severe attacks.
He however urged the Federal Government to give asthma treatment the much needed attention. He called on the government to train more doctors and nurses and other health care practitioners on the management of asthma. No one with asthma or allergies needs to suffer.
The medical practitioner also called on the government at all levels to subsidize the high cost of drug for the treatment of patients. “Some of these drugs are not affordable and quite a number of them are not available in the country. “We want a situation in which the government will bring the drugs down to the level of common asthmatic patients.
