Indications emerged on Sunday that officials of the United Kingdom’s Serious and Organised Crime Agency had interrogated a former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, in detention in Dubai.
An online blog, saharareporters.com, reports that Ibori was quizzed as part of preparations for his extradition to the UK to face trial on money laundering charges.
The blog, which said it got the information from a Dubai police source, said the former governor’s interrogation would continue throughout his detention in Dubai.
Ibori’s bail application was last week revoked by the United Arab Emirates after Dubai police foiled the ex-governor’s alleged plot to escape through Iran, the blog reported.
The source said that UK authorities delivered their extradition case filings to the Dubai police last week. The hearing is expected to commence soon.
The blog reported that UAE authorities had prevented officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from meeting with Ibori.
“The Nigerians were not allowed to see or interrogate Mr. Ibori in Dubai, because we do not have any extradition treaty with Nigeria,” a Dubai Police source said.
Law enforcement sources in London said they expected Ibori’s petition for asylum in Dubai “to collapse quickly,” adding that the UK police have high hopes of getting the former governor, who is also a British citizen, to be repatriated to the UK to face trial, the blog said.

After the recent jailing of two of Ibori’s associates, Mrs. Christine Ibori-Ibie and Ms. Udoamaka Okoronkwo, the UK Crown Prosecution Service has commenced the trial of the ex-governor’s wife, Theresa Ibori, and one of his lawyers, Bhadresh Gohil.

The trial was adjourned last Friday to enable the court to decide on a fresh application on Monday regarding Gohil’s renewed application for a separate trial, saharareporters said.

When contacted on the telephone on Sunday, the spokesman of the EFCC, Mr. Femi Babafemi, said he did not have details of Ibori’s interrogation.

He said, “It is not something I’m aware of, I don’t have the details. I can’t say anything until I reach our people in Dubai tomorrow (today).”

All hands must be on desk to ensure that Mr Ibori must not apply Alameighsia style to escape to Iran, or else, he will acquire nuclear weapon and all his enemies will be in for trouble.
