They've been doctored. Alot of em. Import directly if you can. It's a felony to tamper with odometers here

Car buyers in Nigeria cannot afford the cars they want sometimes. So unscrupulous dealers fill the void by buying junk cars, putting new bumpers and repainting them to stay within the intended price range. This is the only way they can stay afloat. Someone will show up to bid N1.8m for a 2010 Camry. There is always someone ready to sell ASIS. Final final, the ball joint pulls, car summersaults and owner dies while "wicked uncles in the village" take the blame.

I will never ship any car to Nigeria for sale. It is not worth the time and effort.

For reliable VIN check there are 3 main options,

NMVTIS, AutoCheck and CarFax.

None of the above are free services, they cost a minor fee.

Free services like vehiclehistory.com and vincheck.info are usually scanty and would be useless to verify mileage and accident, flood history, etc.

Epicvin.com and similar sites provide NMVTIS reports which contain the least information available, and are often incomplete.

For full and detailed reports detailing the history of a vehicle from manufacture to import to Nigeria:

AutoCheck

CarFax.

Knowing the history of a Used Or Tokunbo vehicle before you decide to buy one can save you a lot of money down the road. By ordering a vehicle history report (VHR), you can remove most of the guesswork to determine if a used car has been involved in accidents or had major repairs

Only folks who don't know about cars buy cars with mileage. A 300.000 km vehicle last more than most vehicles below 100,000km. It's all about maintenance.

All you need:

- VIN Checks for any vehicle you're considering for purchase, particularly Tokunbo, but also Nigerian used.

- Physical inspection of the vehicle by a trained and trusted professional, after the VIN check.

- Verification of customs duty payment particularly for a Tokunbo vehicle.

- FRSC database check for a Nigerian used vehicle. Also verify ownership using original proof of ownership certificate for a Nigerian used vehicle.

With the above you would account for:

Past history of the vehicle before import to Nigeria - VIN check.

Import history - Customs, etc

Present condition of the vehicle - Thorough physical inspection.

Nigerian history of the vehicle: FRSC and proof of ownership verification.

True

One of the most common unwholesome and dishonest practices in the Nigerian auto sales industry, and indeed worldwide is odometer tampering and mileage rollback AKA clocking.

It was so rampant in the USA in the 1990s that laws were enacted to check the trend, which carry civil and criminal penalties.

In Nigeria it often happens because buyers may have unrealistic expectations and place undue emphasis on mileage, often considering it in isolation and not as part of the entire condition of the vehicle.

Mileage is important, but should only be considered as part of the entire condition of the vehicle, and on its own should not necessarily be a deciding factor for purchase.

The following should always raise red flags:

An older car with suspiciously and significantly low or below average mileage.(13,500 Miles per Year for US vehicles)

E.g. a 2005 Toyota Camry with 85,000 miles in 2018

In some cases the miles may be true miles, and the vehicle may indeed have undergone less than average use.

More often than not, the mileage would have been tampered with before the vehicle is advertised for sale in Nigeria.

Always insist on a VIN check/Vehicle History Report for any car you intend to buy, Nigerian used or Tokunbo.

It's really the only way to be certain of the mileage and indeed the true condition of any vehicle imported to Nigeria.

i disagree. milage shows how the car engine and its transmission system has been used. so milage is a very important factor to consider. a car with less milage will last longer and less problematic than the one with high milage. in US milage is a very important factor. you can't compare over stressed young man to a man at its 50's who don't know what stress is about.

Perhaps you didn't understand the post Sir.

I didn't mention that mileage wasn't an important factor.

The emphasis was on mileage considered in isolation, as the sole indicator of the condition of the vehicle, which is wrong, and can lead a buyer to make wrong decisions, and a dealer to tamper with the mileage to fool such buyers who focus on just the mileage.

Regarding the bolded, that is not necessarily true.

A vehicle with 100,000 highway miles may be in much better condition than one with 60,000 city miles, other factors being the same.

Stop-and-go traffic as observed in a city leads to much more wear and tear than continuous engine performance as observed on a highway, other factors being the same.

A vehicle with 100,000 miles with proper and routine maintenance and service would be in better condition than one with 60,000 miles with poor maintenance and poor service history.

The point remains that mileage should not be considered in isolation. It should be considered alongside the general condition of a vehicle.

I hope I'm not the only one that has observed that a large number of Tokunbo or Nigerian used cars for sale by car dealers have relatively low mileage. For example, I have seen several 15 year old cars having 75,000 miles on the odometer.  This seems to be good news to an average Nigerian who does not know much about cars. However, it's a cause for alarm to those who do. Many people get excited when they see a car with an unusually low mileage. On the contrary, those who know about cars, actually know there is a need to probe further.

Why is this of any concern you may ask. It's a major concern because some phony individuals rollback the mileage of these cars. Some of these cars are bought and shipped to Nigeria with high mileage ranging from 200,000 to 450,000 miles or even more. However, these alarming 6-digit figures are usually reduced to 5-digits in order to make the cars seem more appealing to unsuspecting car buyers. Whether the odometer reading of the cars in miles or kilometers, they roll everything back to 75,000

Don't be a victim of mileage rollback. Do a thorough inspection before you pay for that car. Do a VIN check to know the last reported mileage. Believe car sellers at your own peril. I remember someone who was excited to buy an eight year old car with about 25,000 miles on the odometer. The car ended up being a nightmare and the buyer could not use the car for more than a week before it died. The car was like "Solomon Grundy".

According to U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), an average car covers 13,500 miles per year. However, several vehicles exceed this average figure and find their way to Nigeria because prices usually decline as mileage increases.

Note: This does not negate the fact that some cars actually come with reasonably low mileage. It also does not mean all cars with high mileage are bad. All we are saying is.. Shine your eyes and know what you are buying. Don't let anyone package a car with 350,000 miles to you as 75,000 miles.

https://autojosh.com/75000-mileage

75,000 is actually a pretty high mileage, usa to nigeria is actually 5000 miles apart.
