Canadians, Not Mexicans, Represent Largest Number Of Visa Overstays In The U.S. by salford1: 2:18pm On Aug 10, 2018
OTTAWA — U.S. President Donald Trump may want to build a wall along the Mexican border, but, in recent years, studies suggest the majority of unauthorized immigrants settling in the U.S. have arrived legally — not by crossing the border unlawfully.

And according to a new U.S. government report, the largest group of people who enter the U.S. legally and then overstay their welcome aren’t coming across the southern border at all. They’re coming from Canada.

Nearly 93,000 Canadians stayed in the U.S. longer than they were permitted in 2017, according to data released Tuesday by the Department of Homeland Security, far more than from any other country. In comparison, Mexico accounted for about 47,000 visa overstays.

The new data, which shows that more than 600,000 travellers overstayed their U.S. visas last year, comes as the U.S. government looks to close gaps that have made it difficult to track visitors and ensure they leave when they’re supposed to.

Let us try to properly understand the article before concluding that Canadians are also running away from Canada. A couple of points to take note of from the article are that:

1. Visa overstay is not the same as becoming an unauthorized immigrant. If you overstay your visa by even one day you will be counted as part of visa overstay but not yet an unauthorized immigrant. The article also mentioned that “While Canada is the biggest culprit when it comes to visa overstays, the Center for Migration Studies estimates that Canadians accounted for just 0.4 per cent of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. in 2015, while Mexicans made up more than half of the unauthorized population.”

2. One major reason for Canadian overstaying their visas in the US is due to the fact that Canadian typically do not require visas to visit the US for tourism or business for up to six months and as a result some Canadians end up staying in the U.S. longer than the standard six-month limit for tourists because they don’t realize they’re breaking the law.

The following part of the articles says it all:

“While Canada is the biggest culprit when it comes to visa overstays, the Center for Migration Studies estimates that Canadians accounted for just 0.4 per cent of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. in 2015, while Mexicans made up more than half of the unauthorized population.

Chang said some Canadians end up staying in the U.S. longer than the standard six-month limit for tourists because they don’t realize they’re breaking the law. He mentioned one client of his who married a U.S. citizen and spent three years in the U.S. as a visitor. “I told her she’d been illegal for three years, and she was shocked,” he said. “They seem to think that they’re kind of the 51st state and the laws don’t apply to them.”

People also need to be aware that even Countries like Canada or UK that don't need to apply for a US visa to visit the US needs to apply for the ESTA in order to be granted entry into the US.

If the granted ESTA holder overstays his/her presence beyond 6 months in the US they will be required from then forward to apply for a US visa at the US embassy...and might be denied.

While British Citizens and other countries that are part of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) require ESTA to enter the US, citizens of Canada and that of Bermuda are NOT part of VWP and are not required to obtain Visa or ESTA to enter the US as tourist of for business for up to 6 months.

The only documents these two counties need is their passport.

I was going to berate the two posters above me for not reading your post before commenting but then it struck me that 93,000 Canadians overstayed in the US. Let's even assume that 50% of that number got married to US citizens in 2017, the remaining 50% stayed away from Canada for over 6 months probably working or just roaming around.

That looks like running away to me.

Read and comprehend the article well. Canadians don't need a visa to enter the U.S. and can stay up to 6 months visa free. Older Canadians who go down south for a warmer climate during winter time, forget this and may stay a little bit passed the 6 months. The reason this article is extremely comical for anyone who lives in North America, is that Canada has a better safety net than the U.S. Why would any Canadian intentionally live underground in the U.S when they can cross the border and receive free housing, medical care, monthly gov't allowance, etc ? Use your heads people.

lol My man your ignorance is comical. Stop trolling. But I am free today so I have time. To begin with, 93k people with a population of 37 million is probably less than 1 percent. Keep in mind there are many places around border towns Canadians can literally just walk into the U.S unchecked and vice versa. Both countries have the biggest unguarded border in the world. If Canadians wanted to run away to the U.S millions would, believe me. In fact several states depend on Canadians, literally. It's so bad that congress is trying to extend the visa free stay to 8 months, hoping more Canadians would stay. Don't fool yourself, Canadians "over-staying" benefits the U.S greatly.

No they are still a good portion coming to live illegally in America because they have more jobs here. If a Canadian plans to immigrate to the US they still have to go through the proper channels like other immigrants which is not easy. They think they have the same rights as American citzens in this country but they don’t. Even they get free stuff and what is their standard of living. Government assistance is nothing to brag about , they give you that because there’s not enough employment . Why do people around the world still want to flock to the US than Canada even though the US has tighter immigration. Reason being there is more opportunities to make more money and be more independent which is better than living on government assitance.

Lol I take offense to the word troll. tongue.

I can only ever rememeber quoting you once and it was an innocent question some months back. Talk about a sense of overestimated self worth angry.

Anyway I forgive you so that we can talk about your link:

These individuals are being recognized in a bipartisan bill currently before Congress that would allow Canadians over the age of 55 to stay south of the border for up to eight months of the year.

In the state of Florida, Canadians own 500,000 properties.

If you are running away from your country because of cold is that not still running away? cheesy

Seriously, I have heard of Canadians who decry their treatment by US border officials whenever they try to enter the US. They complained that their relationship is not as rosy in day to day activities as it is on paper. I have also heard of Canadians who love to drive over to America to buy foodstuffs because it is cheaper.

How true is this? Please note that it is another innocent question.

Please no mind am. Even some of the people who left the US because of the tight immigration to go to Canada because they offered them PR are already regretting it. No jobs . Even one time , I was watching the news and one Mexican who was residing illegally in America went to Canada to get paper . He said totally regrets his decision, he prefer to stay in America illegally than stay in Canada legally because he makes more money doing construction work in the US and can take of his family. Getting professional job in Canada is incredibly tough, they would be asking for stupid Canadian experience . I have never heard of such thing on the US. Every country has it flaws , but I have seen so many immigrants do well in this country even better than some of the people wey they born for this country. In America, there are opportunities, especially if you are not lazy . Plus you do not always need to go to school to make money in the country as well.

I can't go through everything, just too much. But to counter the last quote, I've never made less than 6 figures since coming here. And the majority of my co-workers making the same amount were high school drop out. The Mexican guy clearly didn't know where to look or maybe he didn't like paying taxes ? So a doctor in Nigerian can land in America and start practicing tomorrow ? Keep preaching American exceptionalism, I know the truth.

No he can not start practicing tomorrow, please don't be stupid. But he far likely to be able to practice in America than Canada. Please google about medical practice especially for immigrants in Canada. I'm not preaching America exceptionalism, its just the truth. There are job opportunities here and there is opportunity to become an EMPLOYER here better than Canada. Look at the link, see how Americans are using immigrants to flourish their economy. A lot of the world entertainment comes from America. Like the saying goes, another poison is another man meat. That federal skilled worker program na scam. It's invites skilled workers with money to come over, knowing well that they aren't enough opportunities for them to work. Then blindsiding them by using discriminatory practices like requiring Canadian work experience.

Your back tracking. Now he'll "far likely to be able to practice in America than Canada" Is this your opinion or is this a fact ? If it's a fact show us. If not how did you come up with this conclusion ? Your bias is clearly showing. I'm aware of the medical issues in Canada for residency and altering foreign qualifications. Unlike you I'm not bias. Again back to the Mexican guy who couldn't make money during construction. One construct job below pays 29 an hour (60k per year), while the other pays 88,500k per year, with little or no education required. Add overtime and that's easily 100k per year. Post US construction wages.

While you're preaching America exceptionalism which is becoming a myth more and more, you know the 1 percent who became a bill gates, you conveniently like to forget who has a wealthier middle class, or who can move up the socio-economic ladder faster in which country, and the growing gap between the rich/poor Americans. You're more likely to win the lottery than become a Bill Gates. Lastly, what do you mean opportunity to become an employer ? With the internet and how connected the world is, anyone can become an employer anywhere. Your bias is too much my friend. I love America. Lived in Houston and have family all over the U.S. from Houston, Chicago, Oakland, etc. Canada also has major flaws without a doubt. But people who live in developed nations know the truth and will not be drinking the U.S exceptionalism Kool-Aid. It’s like Trump asking how come more people from Norway don’t migrate to the U.S. The world had a good laugh, including people from Norway. They really feel themselves down south.

To sum things up because I can’t go back and forth. Got things to do with the pikin dem. My cousin recently came as a skilled worker and is pulling in 6 figures a year. My good friend ( Femo Yoruba guy) is an engineer, making 6 figures, owns 5 houses in the Toronto area worth 1 million each. Guess his net worth 5 million ? I'm not back tracking from anything. I said the OPPORTUNITIES ARE THERE. Getting medical residency in a developed country takes a while for even those born in the country so I don't expect a Nigerian immigrant doctor to start practicing tomorrow. But there are so many Nigerian doctors practicing in American and doing well compared to Canada. There recently a report that Nigerian immigrants are some of the most successful group of people in America. Because the Canadian government , give you one yeye paper , you will not let anyone hear word. They give that paper for a reason, that the only good thing they have to offer you. Even on this nairaland, you often see Canada as a plan b option when people can not get an American Visa.
