Episode one
I raised my phone up and took another selfie. That's all I've been doing all through out the company's award/employee recognition dinner. I guess I was so used to the annual dinner that I was now bored of it.
After some time of waiting,Mr Godfrey,our boss,stepped up the podium to announce the employee of the year. After a long speech which I wasn't really paying attention to,he called"And the award of this year is.."There was silence"miss Anna Marie Okoro!"There was a huge round of applause.I could hear boo's from corners but I just wore a huge smile and stepped out to collect my reward.
After the event was concluded,I and my friend Naomi headed for my car. On our way,I was congratulated by most of the employees. It was only Chika,probably my worst enemy at work that hissed when she saw me. Naomi and I just laughed at her. She was jealous that I had once again won the award that I had been bagging in five years despite her efforts.
We almost got to the car when Francis and some other male employees at work approached us."Hey Anna Marie,congratulations on another employee of the year award"he said beaming with smiles"thank you"I replied"Tony and I were just thinking of throwing a party tomorrow afternoon at Hotel de laurel in your honor,it will be simple and fun,do you agree?"I kept mute for a while"I really don...""We'll be there"Naomi interrupted and I tapped her hand. Naomi always had a knack for getting me into what I didn't want too"great!I'll be expecting you by twelve o clock tomorrow afternoon. See ya"Francis said and walked out with his friends. Immediately they left I turned to Naomi"Naaoommi""what?"She asked"I promised Nelly that I would take her shopping tomorrow. I really haven't had time for her and I want to use this opportunity to do some bonding"I said"well take her to the party. I'm sure she would love it,stop complaining,gosh"Naomi said and got into the car. I sighed and shook my head at my best friend and got into the car with her. We drove off

Episode 1 continues
Before I continue with the story,I would like to tell you about myself. My name is Anna Marie Okoro. I was born into a rich family as an only daughter. After my secondary education,I attended one of the best universities in the U.S. I came back home with a masters degree in business administration after 7 years. My father got me a job at Exco group of companies,one of the biggest business enterprises involved in oil and gas. After hard work promotions upon promotions,I became the special assistant to the managing director with a mind blowing salary and other benefits. So I've always been rich. As for marriage,well I wasn't really that lucky. Here is how the story goes...

Episode one continues
It was a hot Thursday afternoon. I decided to stop by a restaurant before continuing my trip to the foreign investors house. I ordered for a cold drink,paid for it and began sipping away.
As I was enjoying my cold juice,I heard a warm and manly"hello"from behind me. I turned back and saw a tall,muscular and very handsome dark man. He looked so perfect and like any woman's dream man."Hi"I replied"may I join you?" he asked politely"sure"I said not looking moved(even though I was)"my name is Joshua but my friends call me Josh,and yours?""Anna Marie"I replied"a beautiful name for a very beautiful lady. I would love to know more about you,may I have your number?"His voice sounded so charming and irresistible and so I had no choice but to call it out"great!I will call you this night so be expecting my call"I nodded"I have to go now as my friends are waiting for me"he said pointing to a bunch of guys at a table. He waved me goodbye and left.
Later that night,he called me and we began a long conversation. He was just about to ask me to tell him about myself when he complained of insufficient credit and asked me out and I agreed. He picked me up the next day and took me to the same restaurant where we met.
After our first date,Joshua swept me off my feet. I fell madly in love with him,and after a month of courting,we became boyfriend and girlfriend. During that period,it was always"Anna baby give me
this,Anna baby give me that. It was the same guy that told me he worked in an oil company. Anyways,I had already fallen madly in love with him and gave him all he wanted,ignoring the fact that he was poor and uneducated.
When I introduced him to my parents,they went against it and warned me to end it but I refused. My father disowned me and I eloped with him to England were we secretly got married.
After our marriage,we returned home to Lagos and moved to the house that I purchased in Lekki. Nine months later,we had our first daughter whom we called Nelly.
After Nelly was born,I noticed that Josh had become very cold towards me. We were no longer the same happy couple that we used to be. We no longer slept with each other and he even moved to another room and when I asked him about it,he said I snored too much. I also suspected that he was cheating on me but turned a blind eye.
One year after our marriage,Joshua Olayinka,ran away with another girl to the United States Of America stealing the sum of ten million naira(my entire life savings)I was shocked and devastated. I was taken back in by my father and my baby and I moved to his house. I was depressed for many days and even tried suicide at some point but it was God that saved me. The pain of losing the only man I loved and who I gave up everything for was just too much to bear.
That was 10 years ago. I am now very successful and happy with myself and my daughter

I froze at this point. It felt as if cold water had been poured into my feet and that a hammer had hit my head. I looked left,squatted and asked"why are you asking such a question darling?""Because I got into a fight with my classmate because she said I didn't have a dad"I stood up angrily and asked"who is the insolent baboon that would dare say such a thing"Nelly took my hand and led me to her classmate at the waiting room obviously gossiping with other girls. Nelly pointed her to me and I called"hey you!come here noww!"I cried and she obediently walked towards me. I grabbed her ear and began pulling"how dare you talk to my daughter in such a manner? are you mad!"I continued pulling her ear as she yelled and a teacher quickly rushed in"madam?what is the matter?"She asked and pulled the young girl out of my grasp"good thing you are here!I want you to ask that insolent brat what gave her the right to assault my daughter both physically and verbally"she was just about to talk when I heard from behind me,a harsh but familiar voice"and what gives you the right to hurt my daughter?"I slowly turned back and saw one of my greatest enemies. It was Chika!

I was surprised when I saw Chika there. I didn't even know that her daughter was going to that school. I could smell trouble."Chika!thank God you are here"I said trying to keep my calm"I would like you to ask your daredevil daughter why she should tell Nelly that she doesn't have a father""why should I ask her that?isn't she saying the truth?"Chika said and walked closer to me"hey!Chika,so this is what you have been doing since abi?gossiping with your daughter about my personal life?its a shameful thing!""Don't you insult me!"Chika said while trying to match her height with mine. She was very short. We began a heated exchange of words as people gathered around to watch the WWE divas fight. She soon grabbed my neck and forced me down. She beat me like a child as I,being sophisticated and not used to fighting,just struggled on. It was as if she was using this opportunity to vent out her anger and hatred on me. We were soon separated by some men."And next time"Chika warned"don't you dare approach my daughter"she said,hissed,grabbed her daughter and stormed out. I was horrified and embarrassed. I didn't need a soothsayer to tell me my journey with that school was over

I got home that night and soaked my bed with tears. I just felt so embarrassed and angry. After crying for sometime,I picked up Joshua's picture from my drawer. I stared at it and soon yelled"damn you Joshua!this is all your fault!!!"I threw the picture to the wall and it smashed into pieces. Some seconds later,Nelly rushed inside"mommy!!are you ok?"When she saw her fathers picture smashed on the ground,she came up to me and held me on my arm"mommy,its ok. Even though my father isn't here,you are still more than enough for me and I'm so proud of you. I love you mommy" I looked at her tear eyed and hugged her tightly. She hugged me back. She ended up sleeping with me in my room that night,but I enjoyed every minute w
ith my sweet daughter.

I got my revenge on Chika the next day by reporting her to the management. She got a months suspension. She was. Even Lucky that I didn't sue her
Anyways,I told Naomi everything. And then she began"ooo no Anna Marie. This is exactly what I was afraid of. No matter how you try Anna M,you can't run away from the reality of your life. Nelly needs a father. Ten years,ten good years that girl has lived without feeling the warmth and love of a real father. It isn't fair!stop being so selfish. To top it all up,you are still young. It isn't too late for you!haba,if not for anything,at least do it for your daughter please"By the time she finished saying all these,tears had already welled up in my eyes. No matter how I hate to admit it,she was right."Speaking of second chances"she said and pointed towards the direction of Francis who was waving at us. He smiled at me and we smiled back...

He placed his hand on mine and began"I know you've been through a lot,and I know you have been hurt before. But I care for you Anna Marie,please allow me to heal your wounds. Listen,I love you. From the first day I saw you at work,I went crazy for you. But before I could make a move,you were already married. I was devastated for weeks,I wasn't myself. However,when I heard you had separated with your husband,I felt a new kind of hope because crazily enough,I wasn't interested in any other girl. I'm not saying I'm happy your husband left you,but,Anna Marie,I love you. I also love Nelly very much. So please,give me a chance into your life"Francis concluded. I kept mute for a while and replied"I'm sorry Francis,b..but I'm not yet ready"I removed my hand from his,got up and walked out. I knew I had let him down

I'm sure you'll be wondering how it all got to this point. The truth is that Francis had been trying to make love advances at me. It all started about a month after the Chika incident. He would send me flowers,chocolates,love cards and other things both at home and at work. But I wasn't interested. Francis was a great guy,a perfect guy for every decent girl. He was average in height,chocolate in complexion and those glasses he wore only brought out his cuteness and innocent looks all the more. He was soft spoken and very patient despite the fact that I had been turning him down for up to a month. Naomi had begged me to give him a chance to prove himself since he was also close with Nelly. It was just on Friday afternoon that I finally agreed to go out with him. He was so happy that he began to shout my name and carry me up. Everyone was really haPpy for us. On sunday night,Naomi made sure I looked extra special that night. The blue gown she brought me that day perfectly brought out my figure eight shape and my make-up made me look extra gorgeous as it blended with my fair skin and pussy cat like eyes. He picked me up and took me to an extra expensive restaurant on sunday night and that's how we got to this point.

I got home that night very weak and down. I saw Naomi discussing with Nelly and when she saw me,Nelly ran and hugged me. I led her to the couch where she hit me with a shocking question"so mommy,are you now married to uncle Francis?"I was amazed. I fixed my gaze on her sternly for sometime and asked"who gave you that idea?""It was aunt Naomi"she said and pointed to the talkative who was trying to tiptoe away. When she heard her name,she turned to me and smiled while I got up,grabbed her hand and led her to a spot far from Nelly."Naomi!what nonsense have you been filling in Nelly's head?""What?"She asked innocently"I only told her that..anyways,how did your date with Francis go?""Horrible!"I replied"he asked me to be his girlfriend and I turned him down"Naomi turned pale"ah ahh,why now?see what you are doing to this guy isn't fairooo. He has been so patient with you,despite the fact that you've hurt him several times. God, Anna M,what is even your problem?you have a guy who is willing to love you and your daughter at your doorstep and you are pushing him away?hold on"she paused"are you still hoping that,that bad man Joshua will still come back?earth to Anna Marie,his not. He left you and he ain't coming back anymore"at this,tears were already welled up in my eyes"Listen,I want you to stop being blind. Open your heart for Christ sake. Anyways,I'm leaving. I went to bed that night thinking about all Naomi had said"naomi and her long talk"I said to myself. Truth be told,she was right. It was time I give love a chance again. I slowly drifted off to sleep with all those toughts in my mind.

The next monday evening,I had returned early from work while Nelly was on break. We were watching our favorite program on TV when Nelly suddenly hit me with the question"so are you getting married to uncle Francis?"I dropped the remote gently and replied"no dear,I have no intention to get married to him""but why?!!"She suddenly yelled and I was frightened a little"why are you yelling at me like that?are you mad?"I asked"yes!I'm mad at you. For 10 years,I haven't seen my father. I always feel ashamed whenever I see my friends with their fathers. Now that you have a chance to change everything,you are being wicked!what kind of mother are you?!!"I angrily gave her a slap which I hadn't,I don't think,given her in ten years"how dare you talk to me like that?do you know what I've been through?you should be grateful,all these good things you are enjoying now is because of me,with no contribution from that worthless father of yours"I said,tears welling up"I hate you!!!!"Nelly yelled. I made to beat her but she ran outside."You'll come back you brat!!"I yelled. Little did I know that,that...was a bad idea.

Episode 3 continues
5 hours gone and we were still looking for Nelly. She ran away. I called my neighbors and we searched every nook and cranny of the street but we still didn't find her. I was devastated and regret accumulated in my heart. I called Naomi and she rushed to my house and joined in the search. We looked until nightfall and to make it worse,it was raining heavily. When it became very dark,Naomi dragged me to my house. Neighbors slowly retired to their homes and I was left to my fate. After drying me up since I was drenched in the rain,she tried to make me eat hot soup but I refused. All I could say was"my daughter,my daughter"Naomi soon got pissed off and said"o my God Anna M,that daughter of yours is beyond crazy. I've always warned you against spoiling her,but you wouldn't listen!"I just ignored her and continued muttering to myself. She got up and made to call the police when there was a knock on the door. She opened it and yelled"Neeelllyyy!!"I sprang to my feet. There my only daughter was,drenched in the rain from head to toe. And guess who she was with?it was Francis. However,I ignored his presence and dashed to my daughter giving her a big hug."Where did you find her?"Naomi asked"I saw her on a bench in a nearby park. She was crying,its a good thing I saw her and when she told me everything that caused her running away,I was angry."He paused"now Nelly,I want you to apologize to your mother"he said angrily"mommy,I'm so sorry. I know you have been doing your best for me and I was wrong to judge. Can u forgive me?"She said in tears"of course dear,but don't do it again ok?"She nodded and we hugged.
Later,I tucked her in bed and went to thank Francis."Its ok. But you have to be more strict with Nelly. Make sure she dosent do it again. I nodded and he made to go home when I held him back"uuhh,Francis,is that offer of yours still on?..."

Episode 4
Francis and I dated for a year before I finally got married to him. It was a grand wedding as dignitaries and elites attended the weeding thanks to my father who approved the marriage the moment he saw Francis. Nelly was also excited as she took the role of flower girl. We had our honeymoon in Australia before we returned home and I moved with him. To be honest,he was really cool. Even though I wasn't in love with him,he still loved me and my daughter and I respected him for that. We were peaceful and we lived as husband and wife. He was also very patient with me even though I had no fellings for him. I was happy

On this particular day however,I was sitting down on the sofa and watching TV. I hadn't gone to work because I was a little ill. Later that day,when Francis returned home,I explained to him the collision I had with his mother earlier that day. He began to apologize"I'm so sorry honey,I know what my mother has been doing to you. You know she doesn't really like you. But don't worry,I'll speak with her,I promise""please do. I don't want her stay here to make my life miserable. Its too much for her."My mother in law was going to stay with us for the christmas holidays."Don't worry,I will,I promise"he said"ok,but when do you intend to tell her about your problem?"Francis paused for a while and looked down. The truth is that he had low sperm count that's why he couldn't get me pregnant. When we discovered it,he made me promise not to tell anybody including his mother and I guess I was bearing his cross. It was devastating for him since he always wanted his own children. After a long pause,I said"well?""I promise to tell her soon honey. Just be patient. You know she is kinda an illiterate so making her understand what my problem is might also be a problem"I chuckled a little then put up a serious face"alright then,but don't take to long. She's becoming unbearable,gosh!"Francis laughed and drew me closer"don't worry babe. Thanks so much for being so understanding. You're the best wife ever!"I just laughed,kissed him on the cheek and slept
on his shoulder. He smiled and kissed me back.

Francis warned his mother about bugging my life. But that didn't stop her from making my life miserable when he was away. I can recall several times she harassed me;like the time she over salted my soup and made Francis eat hers. Or the time she took away and sold my mothers expensive jewelry without my permission. There was even a time she stained Francis' shirt with lipstick so that I would think he slept with another woman and leave him. It was only God that saved that I knew what his mother could do and he begged me several times. I was nagged and sometimes,if I rebelled,beaten like a child. I really suffered. But it was ok,I was used to people wrecking my life,so I endured. But there was a particular incident and evil she did that really woke the lion in me...

It was on a cool saturday morning. Francis had gone to visit a friend and I was at home. After taking my bath,I went towards the direction of my room when I heard Nelly's screams. I ran out and what I saw bewildered me. It was my mother in law. She was dragging and yelling at Nelly telling her to leave the house. I quickly ran to Nelly's aid and separated them."Mama!what is it?why are you harassing the poor girl like this?!what did she do to you?"I asked furiously"eh henh,thank God you are here. I want you to take this stranger away from my sons house. Do you know you are evil?your plan was to make your daughter inherit his wealth without giving him children of his own,you witch!!"I was angry and surprised. This all looked like a nollywood movie to me. Was I in one maybe?I searched in my mind for cameras but there were none. It was all real. I just looked at her silently"why are you looking at me that way?see see,just take this girl away from my house!take her out!!"She made for Nelly but I blocked her way. She began to fight me but I angrily pushed her to a nearby couch. It was at that moment that Francis entered...

Francis,visibly angry wore a frown and went close to his mother."Anna Marie?what are you doing?"He asked while raising his mom up. She didn't even allow me to start talking when she began shedding tears that I have no idea where they came from"my son,they have killed your mother oooo. I just sat down to eat breakfast when your wife angrily attacked me. What did I do wrong,hey!"This just reminded month of the main reason why she never left our house despite her trouble making attitude. She would kneel down before him and burst into tears. She would start reminding him of how she suffered to carry him for nine months and how she suffered to take him to school. She would then call on her dead husband to fight for her and I would be so touched and scared and beg Francis to allow her stay. Back to the issue at hand,Francis looked at me and asked me"is it true Anna Marie?"I was about to answer when he began"don't bother explaining yourself. What is wrong with you?aren't you ashamed that you are attacking a woman who ought to be your mother?"I wanted to talk but he cut me off"stop!no matter what she did to you,you have no right to attack her. Listen Anna Marie,if you weren't trained to have respect in your family,don't bring it to mine. Mind yourself!!"He finally concluded. I just looked,mouth agape,shook my head,took Nelly and went to my room why my mother evilly smiled as she hugged her son...

I was packing my clothes inside my bag when Francis suddenly barged in. He approached me and asked"Anna Marie?what are you doing?"I continued packing and replied"as you can see,I'm packing my things. I'm leaving"Francis shook his head"no baby,don't say that. It doesn't have to get this far"he made to touch me but I shrugged him off"don't touch me!!you should be the one ashamed of yourself. Defending that mother of yours like that?without even asking what she did,haba Francis. How can you be like that?you know what,I won't talk much. I'm leaving with my daughter. Not yours,MINE!!and I don't think I will be coming back. Go marry your mother"I spat on the floor and beckoned on Nelly. She came to me and I took her hand,hissed and left"baby wait"Francis tried to chase me.

I sat down on my sofa doing some sewing when I heard a knock on the door. I dropped what I was doing and made for the door. I opened it and saw Francis and my mother in law. Its been a 3 days since I left them for my house in Lekki. I've been staying with Nelly since then."Francis?what are you doing here?"I asked"can we come in?"Francis asked me but I shook my head"no!go back with that mother of yours. The house which you built is hers"Francis shook his head"Anna Marie,I'm sorry. I know you were hurt by what I did. But I hope you understand"I looked away. He cleared his throat"My mother,has something to say"he said and looked at his mother who began to come closer to me. Then I saw a shocker. She knelt down in front of me and apologized"Anna Marie,nwa m,I'm sorry. I'm sorry for all I have done to you and your daughter. Francis explained to me the reason why you couldn't have children. I now know the problem is from him he really loves you so much and I have been going against the one he loves. Can you forgive me?"She asked as tears began to roll down on her cheeks. I was amazed. My mother in law,the one who hated and resented me so much,is now on her knees begging for forgiveness?I thought I was in a dream. I covered my mouth as I also began to cry. It was at that moment that Nelly came to me and held my hand"mommy please forgive daddy and grandma. They are already apologizing. God said we should forgive one another"Nelly told me and smiled. I looked back at my mother and lifted her up from her knees. I hugged her tightly. It was a moment of tears. Francis joined the group hug and so did Nelly. That was how we reconciled,in just 3 days.
