Environmental health according to the WHO is the control of those factors in man's physical environment which exercise, or may exercise, directly or indirectly, a deleterious effect on his physical, biological and social wellbeing. It is quite unfortunate that the most relegated and often not spoken about aspect of health is environmental health.

Most of the diseases we still suffer from in this part of the world are preventable which is the core aspect of EH. Sanitary inspectors (Wolewole) who are now referred to as Environmental Health Officers are not appreciated in Nigeria today because most of their work is not Visible. Yet the effect of their neglect is the emergence and reemergence of various communicable disease all around the country.

Several Nigerians died within the last one month as a result of cholera. Diarrhoea and Gastroenteritis still kills without stop. Malaria is still the highest killer of children under five. Lassa fever is gradually becoming an endemic disease just because in Nigeria we value CURATIVE MEDICINE over PREVENTIVE HEALTH.

It will continue to happen until the Nation gives Environmental Health (which encompasses SANITATION) a pride of place in our health sector.

I am a Wolewole.

Nigerians neglects everything. Environmental health has to do with everyone including the rich and the poor. just like the soot issue in port Harcourt, everyone breaths air and it will even affect those perpetuating the act.

let's protect our health by keeping the environment safe for all of us.
