The Russian military say the Israeli raid on Syria triggered a chain of events, which led to the shooting down of a Russian Il-20 plane by a Syrian S-200 surface-to-air missile. Moscow reserves the right to respond accordingly.

Israel has always told Russia in advance her next move in Syria but for Israel not to inform Russia in advance cost 16 Russians service men.

First of all what right does Israel have by any international norms to strike a sovereign state ?

S-200 weakness is outdated and this shows 100% again that Russian systems are not inclined with the Syrians if this is what the Israeli wanted to know since they have been puting out massive propaganda that the Russia and Syrian systems are synced.

Israeli plane apparently passed just in front of the plane, The Syrian Arab Army got a lock, Israeli doglegged & left, missile lost lock & chose the biggest target…..our plane. Israel violated protocol, called one minute before the attack, not enough time for our bird to get out of the way.

The SA-5 (S-200) is an old system from the 60’s which uses a semi active radar homing missile and how it works is quite simple.

When the ground system detects a target, it illuminates the target with it’s radar like a torch and launches the missile.

The missile then follows the radar reflection from the target until it gets close enough to detonate, goes bang, shoots plane down.

However the beam from the radar "torch" can be quite wide (miles wide), F-16’s are quite small, IL-20’s quite big.. and the missile itself is pretty dumb.

As such, by hiding behind the larger aircraft, the smaller aircraft can almost guarantee an incoming missile will prioritise the large aircraft reflection & kill that instead.

It doesn’t actually matter if the missile was launched against the smaller target in the first instance or if the Identification, friend or foe (IFF) comes into play. The missile itself is too dumb to care. It just goes for the largest thing it can see.

You are very correct bro. Most missiles are dumb and i doubt if there's a failsafe mechanism to call back the missile/make it self detonate without hitting the target or that would have been done
