Pregnancy also known as gestation is the time during which one or more offspring develops inside a mother. A multiple pregnancy involves more than one offspring such as with twins. Some women may experience early symptoms and signs within the first week of pregnancy in the first trimester, while others develop symptoms later on in the pregnancy. The first symptom of early pregnancy can also be similar to symptoms experience prior to the menstrual period, so a woman may not recognize the symptoms as related to pregnancy.

Pregnancy symptoms differ from woman to woman and pregnancy to pregnancy; However, one of the most significant pregnancy symptoms is a delayed or missed period. Symptoms of early pregnancy may include; missed periods, tender breast, nausea and vomiting, hunger, frequent urination. Understanding the signs of pregnancy is important because each symptoms may have causes other than pregnancy. You may have pregnancy symptoms withing a week of conception. Pregnancy may be confirmed by pregnancy test.


Pregnancy Signs and Symptoms

1. Missed Period

If you are in your child bearing years and a week or more has passed without the start of an expected menstrual cycles you might be pregnant. You will likely miss your period four weeks after conception. However, the symptom can be misleading if you have irregular menstrual cycle, you will want to take a pregnancy test to confirm,

2. Breast Tenderness

Early in pregnancy, hormonal changes might make your breast sensitive and sore. This is likely to go away after a few weeks when your body has adjusted to the hormones a few weeks when your body has adjusted to the hormones. Breast tenderness is common during the first trimester, and is more common in women who are pregnant at a you age. You may experience a feeling of heaviness or fullness in the breast. These symptoms can begin in some women as early as one to two weeks after conception.

3. Morning Sickness (Nausea and Vomiting)

Morning sickness also called nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, is a symptom of pregnancy that involves nausea or vomiting. According to the British Medical Journal; more than half of pregnant women suffer from nausea and vomiting, which typically begins by the 4th week and disappears by the 16th week of pregnancy. The cause of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is unknown, but may be due to the rise in human chorionic gonadotrophin hormone concentration.

4. Mood Swings

A mood swing is an extreme or rapid change in mood. Mood swing is a common symptom experienced especially during the first trimester. Mood changes during pregnancy can be caused by physical stress, fatigue, changes in your metabolism, or by the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Changes in your hormone level during pregnancy can affect your level of neurotransmitters, which are brain chemicals that regulate your mood.

5. Food Cravings

Food craving also called selective hunger is an intense desire to consume a specific food, and is different from normal hunger. Food cravings is a common symptom experienced especially during the first trimester of pregnancy. These food preference can be chalked up to hormonal changes. When you're pregnant, you might become more sensitive to certain odor and your sense of taste might change.

6. Abdominal Bloating

Abdominal bloating is a symptom that can appear at the early stage of pregnancy. Some women may experience feelings of abdominal enlargement or bloating. Hormonal changes during early pregnancy can cause yo to feel bloated.

7. Constipation

Constipation is a bowel movement that are infrequent or hard to pass. The stool is often hard and dry. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause your digestive system to slow down, which can result to constipation.

8. Frequent Urination

Frequent urination is simply the release of urine from the urinary bladder on a frequent basis which can serve as an early indication of pregnancy. During pregnancy, the blood volume increases during pregnancy, causing your kidneys to process extra fluid that ends up in your bladder. The human chorionic gonadotrophin hormone stimulates frequent urination.

9. Headache

Headache is the symptom of pain anywhere in the region of the head or neck. During pregnancy, increased blood circulation caused by hormonal changes may trigger frequent mild headaches.

10. Increased Basal Temperature

Basal body temperature is the lowest body temperature attained during rest. A higher basal body temperature may also be a sign of pregnancy.
