This is good.

So that people will finally abandon the useless and non productive university school system and embrace the practical, direct and of course, highly productive knowledge that can be gotten online from educative sites like coursera, Lynda, duolingo, udemy, udacity, w3schools, codeacademy, and even youtube.

Our present day university education system is not only outdated but also totally redundant.

And how much do politicians gulp monthly in terms of salary, allowances, personal, coporate, and general embezzlement?
A politician may take 200 million a month but that's nothing in percentage of our revenue we have 200,000 police alone adding 10k to their salary means extra 2 billion a month... We have army, nervy, Air Force, civil defense, custom, prison, and the rest

Plus normal civil servants... That would be extra 100bn a month and you said double it?

Lol with what money

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected the hiking of school fees of university students as proposed by Dr Wale Babalakin, the chief government negotiator in the ASUU/Federal Government renegotiation exercise.

Prof. Lawan Abubakar, the Bauchi Zonal Coordinator of the Union made the disclosure at a press conference in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

Abubakar said, “One of the major issues our union wishes to bring to public domain is the wild idea of sharing the cost of education between the government and parents proposed by Dr. Wale Babalakin. This idea of sharing the cost of education since government alone cannot fund education, and that parents need to pay for it too.

“He proposed a minimum of N350, 000 as tuition fee for undergraduate students of Arts and Humanities, and N500, 000, for those in Sciences.

“Our union rejected the proposal based on the fact that the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria clearly states that funding education is the sole responsibility of Governments at various levels and not parents,” he maintained.

He added, “In his response, he proposed the idea of an Education Bank, where students will obtain a loan of N1 million each, every session to pay the tuition fee and sustain themselves.
“However, our union also rejected the idea of Education Bank, because for one, not all the students will have access to loan, and for those who will access the loan, it is the same parents who served as sureties, and subsequently pay back the loan, considering the very high rate of unemployment in the country.

“Supposing that the student is able to secure a job after graduation, he cannot start a life while paying back a loan of 4 to 6 million naira, as the case may be.

“In this kind of situation, the graduate would be subjected to, when will he finish paying the loan and establish himself? He asked.
“Frustration will gradually set in and make them live a life of misery”, he further lamented.

The Zonal Coordinator said Babalakin, who owns a private University, gave all the aforementioned proposals because they are aimed at guaranteeing funding for private Universities.

He also said that the federal government owed the Universities revitalization fund of N1.1 trillion.
According to him, the federal government had in 2013 agreed to disburse the sum of N1.3 trillion for the revitalization of Nigeria universities, between 2013 and 2018, but said out of that amount only N200 billion has been released.

“The Bauchi zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), hereby reiterates its unflinching support to the National Leadership of the Union towards its untiring efforts and commitment to the implementation of the 2017 Memorandum of Action (MoA), and by extension the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the 2012 NEEDS Assessment Report, the 2012 Roadmap, the 2011 (MoU), indeed, the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement”.

On the financial situation bedeviling the university system in the country, the Zonal Coordinator lamented that it has continued to remain pathetic.

“The 7% of total budget allocated to the education sector in 2018 budget by the federal government of Nigeria is, to say the least, grossly below the UNESCO recommended minimum of 26%.

“As if this mirage is not bad enough, State Governments across the country are establishing State Universities and abandoning them to TEFUND, the brain child of ASUU as an intervention agency in the funding of education”, he decried.

He denied claims of a report credited to the Acting Minister of Finance, that N20 billion has been release to the Union.
“This is not true as common sense would not take this since ASUU is not an organ of government”, he stressed.

A typical Nigerian wants Harvard University standarded education but wants to pay less than 50k per year. If America with a revenue of over 4 trillion dollars and a population of 300m can't make education cheap.. Is it Nigeria with 200m people and earns less then 15bn dollars every year that can? Let's be serious Jor
My idea minimum school fees should be set at 1 million
But 30% of students should be on scholarships ..churches ,Muslim groups, multi national should take care of this if the person can maintain a minimum grade or gp . In that case the poor can also go to school if they are smart enough...Any other thing we would never achieve world class education

This is the root cause of greed! Let the government deliver like the government of America before they charge such fees. The education system is a sham!

Minimum wage you are talking about is funny

What percentage of American budget is used for salary

Where we use 70% and you want increase ..sure let's make it 200% of our revenue so we keep borrowings money to pay workers and forget about infastructure

If you increase vat to 15% now and focus on taxing people like you would be the first to complain

People like you think it's easy
At 18k wage bill of federal government is 166bn

You see how much they make every month, take out 166bn... They take out money eyes needed for defence and policing about 20bn -50bn a month.. What's left.. What would that impact for 180 million people

When you quote me state facts

You have changed your voice. This wasn't your initial statement. You were trying to compare Nigerian system of education with that of the US. And that was why I countered you. Before you say we should pay 1m here because Americans are paying 1m as school fees, consider the gap between the minimum wages of the two countries. That was what I was saying.

I didn't even champion increment in the minimum wage. Because I know that's not sustainable. Even the current 18k, majority of the states are not paying it. I was only saying the cost basic amenities should reflect the income of the common man.

My advice when it comes to education in Nigeria;
1. People should be discouraged from going to school to study non-bankable courses. Courses like zoology, biochemistry, arts, history, public administration, business administration, botany are useless. Even the universities that teach these course know it, but they have to make their money by means of collecting acceptance fee, school fees, convocation fees, etc.

2. More Nigerians should be encouraged to take up vocational endeavors.

3. Only people who are going to study courses that require licensure should go to universities.

4. The education system here needs a total overhaul.

What kind of committee will propose this kind of hike?

OP there is a typo in your subject heading the fee could not possibly be N500,000k otherwise that would be the same as N500m.
Either N500k or N500,000.

@ subject, what concerns ASUU with fee? Is it na dem gonna pay?

Let ASUU face front and do their work . ASUU striking would only hinder the education students are receiving.

Students should be the group protesting and challenging the fees hike. Or am I missinf something here? undecided

I partially agree.

If you shut out these courses you will create another huge problem. As we speak research is so low in Nigeria and for any country to breakthrough that country must be strong in sciences and in research. To cut off core sciences will create another problem in the long run!

bros the first thing to do is to compare the standard of living. in the USA, the minimum wage per hour is about 18 dollars or so.. in nigeria.. it is 18000.. now with our economy as it is, inflation and all, most people look up to the public universities as a way to reduce cost of education whilst getting the required learning nd training.. you can't suggest 350k just like that when even the most basic of problems have not been tackled yet to make such comparison

1.positive side of his proposal is as follows;
Discourage people from investing in education, after all it is not yielding fruit for majority of Nigerians

2. focus more on entrepreneurship instead Govt. job.

3 Reduce number of graduates we produce yearly, thereby reducing competition for job among those who already have the certificates.

Notable implications of his proposal:
1. lead to increase in number of illiteracy in the country.

2. violent will be on the increase because of point one above; the northern brothers are known for violence because the rate of illiteracy over there unlike the Yoruba brothers.

3.our effort on technology will become even worst. e.t.c
