Gender In Nigeria by lastmanstandn(m): 3:17am On Oct 09, 2018 |
I just saw a topic on the front page about a girl keeping her virginity till marriage to conform with broad expectations of good womanhood and I began to think, why? How does our society perceive gender roles, sex and culture? Are we evolving, or stuck with same ol way of thinking? I wanna share a story about a female King Ahebi Ugbabe (female) who took advantage of a gender fluid Enugu-Ezike to become a King and was described as a King (not a Queen) because that institution never existed before her (so kingship couldn’t have been gendered in absentia). If a female could perform a nongendered role of a King then, how open do you think Nigerians are to electing female leaders, or setting same standards for boys and girls. Will Nigeria ever evolve past this circle? I fear my daughters might grow in a society gendered around masculinity. |
