Why Nigerian Leaders Don’t Value Education – Fela Durotoye by Amagite(m): 9:56am On Nov 08, 2018
The presidential candidate of the Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), Fela Durotoye, has said Nigerian leaders do not value the nation’s education sector because they (leaders) lack ‘qualitative’ education.

Mr Durotoye made this known at an annual leadership and entrepreneurs’ conference organised by the students of the Department of Economics, Obafemi Awolowo University, on Wednesday.

His criticism is coming at a time university lecturers are clamouring for proper funding of Nigerian universities and have shut down academic activities in various schools.

Recall that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) embarked on an indefinite and ‘total’ strike on Sunday and the compliance of some schools.

Addressing the comatose state of the education sector, Mr Durotoye said Nigerian leaders do not really have the quality “of what we can call education”.

Since most of them have no idea of what education actually means, they are always finding it very difficult to actually define the space of education in a nation’s development. If you do not have something it is possible for you not to value it” he said.

Also, he faulted the curricular of the country’s tertiary institutions, saying “there’s need to have practicing individuals in the disciplines design it.”

We can specialise our institutions, and once we specialise our institutions, we specialise the people. Our generation must build a nation where everybody gets equal values without necessarily have to know anybody, where you want and receive equally those opportunities the rich get easily.

Nigerian leaders don't value education because they are failed leaders, them no send us...

Was it not during the PhD holder's tenure that ASUU went on its best striking form

In this life everyone get him own talent, even quality leadership na talent too but Nigerians go just dey carry President give any efulefu wey dem dey sentimental with... grin

Nigerians should advance past this level of sentiments, the earlier the better.

This Fela Durotoye for example, you need to soothsayer to tell you that he will make a better President than Buhari and Atiku. But once you are blind, you are blind.

I totally agree with him.
Most Nigerians are not really educated. They went through the system and came out with a degree.

It is such a shame. We do not understand the value and essence of education has a nation .

80 percent of the Young ones in university for example either bribe, smoke weed, sleep with prof, drug addicts, yahoo boys or drink alcohol all through their 4-5 years at university.

They have nothing tangible in the head to offer. Then they come out claiming graduate.

Most can not defend their project, talk of remember what it was all about because they paid for it.

These are the current and future leaders. We are in trouble because we keep voting them.

the more they spend on education, the wiser their citizens become and and start asking for accountability. this is what an average politician doesnt want, especially nothern politicians.

The question is do really have an educational system in Nigeria? An educational system that has produced more gullible and wicked leaders. When a nation has not defined its destination why would it build any tangible foundation for it's populace. Until we discover who we are we shall always continue in this huge disservice to our nation and continent at large.

ASUU’s best striking form was during the Obasanjo Era.

I know you hate GEJ, but do not go revisionist on him. It is disingenuous.

The longest nationwide ASUU strike in recent memory was a 1year+ strike during the 2000/2001 period. In some schools, it lasted for almost 2 years. Obj was president then (were you a baby then?). And this was not the only one. It was the first time in my life I heard of ASUP (Polytechnics association) because they went on strike too.

The president has fake WAEC certificate and most of the leaders forged what they have as certificates and ASUU is telling them am going on strike...

What do you think they will say?

May be you can go because in my life you lack relevance and I am where I am I am today.
