If you want God to hear your prayers, hear the voice of the poor, If you wish God to anticipate your wants, provide those of the indigent without waiting for them to ask you. Especially anticipate the needs of those who are ashamed to beg. To make them ask for alms is to make them buy it.- Saint Thomas of Villanova
Today you see many people who already have great possessions still laboring day by day to add one field to another with greed that knows no bounds. And you see those who have houses worthy of a king, nevertheless adding house to house every day ( see Is 5 : 8 ). And do we not see people in high positions striving mightly for still higher positions? There is no end to it all because the highest and best is not to be found in any of these things. If a person cannot be at peace until he has the highest and the best, is it surprising that he is not content with inferior and worse things? It is folly and extreme madness always to be longing for things that cannot only never satisfy but cannot even blunt the appetie. However much you have such things you still desire what you have not yet attained. You are always restlessly sighing after what is missing.
The wicked therefore walk round in circle (see Ps 11:9), naturally wanting what will satisfy their wants, and foolishly thrusting away the means of attaining it--that is, of attaining not consumption but consummation. Thus, they wear themselves out with pointless effort and do not reach the end of happy fulfillment. They delight in the beauty of the creature rather than of the Creator (see Rm 1:23). They lust for each and every experience more than they desire to come to the Lord of all.

An egg given during life for the love of God is more profitable for eternity than a cathedral full of gold given after death. To forgive those who have injured us in our body, our reputation, our goods, is more advantageous to us than to cross the seas to go to venerate the sepulcher of the Lord. Knowledge of divine things is imprinted on our minds by union with God, who is Wisdom itself, just as wax molds itself into the seal--not the reverse.
Seeking God is part of holy reading, just as worldly reading . . . leads to losing him. . . . If, then, you want to find the Lord of mercy, read learned and spiritual doctors, for St. Lipsianus says: "As in prayer we speak with God, in reading Our God speaks to us. . ."
Prayer shows the soul the great secrets of God, is the guide of our desires and of so many of our works, and finally is the gate which takes us to the desired garden of contemplation.
Do not go jumping about from one book to another, nor begin by reading the end. For as a philosopher said, we enjoy variety in what we read, but perseverance in reading is what brings us profit. You should always pick out certain passages from what you have read and fix them in your mind. . . . Always have a definite time each day for reading, just as you should have for prayer and contemplation.
The best preparation for prayer is to read the lives of the saints, not from mere curiosity, but quitely and with recollection a little at a time. And pause whenever you feel your heart touched with devotion.-- ST.PHILIP NERI http://adorationministriesenugu.org

Dearest brethren, you have heard that at a single command Peter and Andrew, leaving their nets, followed the Redeemer, Up to that time they had not seen him perform any miracles. They had heard nothing from him concerning a reward of eternal joy, and still, at a single bidding of our Lord, they forgot about that which they seemed to possess. What great miracles have we seen, with how many scourges are we afflicted, by what great anxieties of threatening things are we disheartened, and yet we scorn him who calls us to follow! He who cousels us in a manner of life already sits enthroned in heaven; . . . already, with the world's disasters increasing more and more, does he announce the approaching day of severe judgement. And yet our proud mind still does not wish to abandon freely that which it is daily losing unwillingly.
. . . But perharps someone will say in his silent thoughts:
"What or how much did either of these fishermen, who possessed almost nothing, forfeit at the call of the Lord?"
In this matter . . . we must consider the disposition rather than personal wealth. He forsakes much who keeps nothing for himself. He forsakes much who gives up every little thing, his all. But we, on the other hand, hold with love the things we have, and even out of desire seek those things which we do not have. Therefore Peter and Andrew forsook much when both forfeited even their desire to possess.

Holy scripture is the table of Christ, from whence we are nourished, from whence we learn what we should love and what we should desire, to whom we should have our eyes raised.

Perhaps you wonder, "Why are the wicked joyous? why do they live in luxury? why don't they have to strive like I do?" The reason is that they who have not signed up to strive for the crown are not required to undergo the labors of the contest. Those who haven't gone down to track don't smear themselves with oil, nor get covered with dust. Trouble comes only to those on their way to glory. The perfumed spectators prefer to watch, not to join in the struggle, nor to endure the sun, the heat, the dust, and the rain.
So those who have devoted themselves to pleasures, luxury, robbery, gain or honors are spectators rather than combatants. They have the profit of labor but not the fruit of virture. They love their ease. By cunning and wickedness they heap up riches. But they will pay the penalty of their iniquity, though it be late in coming. Their rest willl be in hell, yours in paradise. Thus, Job said beautifully that they watch in the tomb ( see Job 21 : 32 ) for they cannot have the calm of quiet rest that he enjoys who shall rise again.

There is no failure so great that a christian cannot rise from it, there is no defeat so final that he cannot convert it into a victory.- Helen C. White

Let him that has love in Christ keep Christ's commandments. Who can describe the bond of the love of God? . . . The height to which love raises us is unutterable. Love binds us to God. Love covers a multitude of sins. Love bears all things, is long suffering in all things. There is nothing vulgar in love, nothing overbearing. Love knows no schism, love is not seditious, love does all things in concord. By love all the elect of God were perfected. Without love nothing is pleasing to God. In love the Lord received us. Because of the love he had toward us, Jesus Christ Our Lord gave his blood for us by the will of God, and his flesh for our flesh, and his life for our lives. You see, beloved, how great and marvelous a thing love is. Of its perfection there is no telling. Who is able to be found in it expect those whom God has counted worthy? Let us pray, therefore, and desire his mercy, that we may be found in love, spotless, without human partisanship. . . . Blessed are we, brethren, if we perform the commandments of God in the concord of love, that our sins may be forgiven through love. For it is written: "Blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered. . . ." This blessedness came to those who were chosen by God through Jesus Christ Our Lord, to whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Let not the strong neglect the care of the weak, and let the weak respect the strong. Let the rich distribute to the needs of the poor, and let the poor bless God who gives them people to supply their want. . . . The great can't subsist without the little, nor the little without the great.

What are the servants of God : his singers whose duty it is to lift up hearts of men and women & move them to spiritual joy - Saint Francis of Assisi

You are holy, Lord, the only God, and your deeds are wonderful. You are strong. You are great. You are the Most High, You are almighty. You, holy Father, are king of heaven and earth. You are Three and One, Lord God all Good. You are Good, all Good, supreme Good, Lord God living and true. You are love, You are wisdom. You are humility, You are endurance. You are rest, You are peace. You are joy and gladness, You are justice and moderation. You are all our riches, and you suffice for us. You are beauty. You are gentleness. You are our protector, You are our guardian and defender. You are courage. You are our haven and our hope. You are our faith, our great consolation. You are our eternal life, great and wonderful Lord, God almighty, merciful Saviour.

The word of God does not belong to him who bears or speaks it, but to him who puts it into practice.

Lord
Make me an instrument of thy peace
Where there is hatred let me sow love
Where there is injury pardon
Where there is doubt faith
Where there is despair hope
Where there is darkness light
Where there is sadness joy

O Divine Master
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console
to be understood as to understand
to be loved as to love
for it is in giving that we receive
pardoning that we are pardoned
dying that we are born to eternal life - St. Francis of Assisi
