The Federal Government negotiating team has appealed to the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to return to the negotiating table, while denying that it has proposed the imposition of N350,000 and N500,000 as tuition fees to be paid per annum by undergraduates.

Speaking with newsmen in Lagos, weekend, Chairman of the team, Dr. Wale Babalakin, dismissed the figures as not only incorrect and contradictory, but also a figment of the imagination of ASUU officials peddling them around the country.

He said: “We do not know from where ASUU got the figures that it has been peddling around the country. Aside from the fact that our committee has no power to impose fees on students, we are at a loss regarding the source of the said figures.”

Babalakin disclosed that while the committee regarded dialogue with ASUU as the most effective way of resolving contentious issues bordering on the industrial dispute, it currently had little choice but to respond to “allegations” and “the inaccurate narratives” that had been consistently provided by ASUU’s President and some zonal heads in a bid to misinform and mislead members of the public on the true situation regarding university education in Nigeria.

He also accused ASUU officials of inundating the public with suggestions that he, as chairman of the Federal Government Renegotiating Committee, was pursuing a personal agenda.

Babalakin said: “All I have expressed are the collective views of the Federal Government Negotiating Team.

“Going by the figures provided by ASUU, Nigeria requires over N2 trillion per annum to fund university education.

“This figure exceeds the total amount available for all capital projects in Nigeria, including health, infrastructure, security and others.

“No doubt, if the money were available for university education as ASUU has insisted it is, the government will have no difficulty in spending it on university education.

“However, as it is, government cannot ignore all other areas of expendi-ture that require funding.”

cool

In order to be a great man in life, you have to fail woefully. Those who are blaming me do not have any idea of greatness in me. ASUU strike is one of my path to greatness.

My WAEC convocation is coming soon but first, I need to sign an executive order to include the expenses in 2019 budget.

ASUU is the problem of Nigerian higher institution made up of useless animals. The should be declared a terrorist group and its activities declared illegal. With this done, Nigerians can boldly say this is the only visible achievement in the Buhari led administration.

If the head of the negotiating team is denying ASUU’s tuitions fees increase allegations while talk about the 2 trillion Naira annual fees required to Universities if the increase was not part of what was put on the table in the first place. Abeg all see is lies from the FG perspective.

Wale babalakin is a very shameless man and a liar. If you don't have an intent of increasing school fees then why canvass for an education bank that failed before and is bound to fail again?

He is known for double speaking with bare faced lies. Dr Babalakin is wrongly accusing ASUU of demanding N2 Trillion annually when all ASUU is demanding for is about N1.1 trillion for university vitalization spanning 4 years at N220 billion annually.

Just a few days ago.. He was at Yabatech, canvassing for an education bank of N2 Trillion to support University education.

What kind of man lies shamelessly like this...

The Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Dr. Wale Babalakin (SAN), has canvassed N2 trillion annual funding for the education sector, saying it will help to produce globally competitive graduates.
The lawyer made the demand yesterday while delivering the 20th anniversary lecture of the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, titled “Technical Education and the Industry: Bridging the Gap for National Development.”

According to Babalakin, the current complain about unemployment in the country would become history if the quality of education improves and meets international standards.

To him, the solution to many of Nigeria’s problems is quality education, which the government alone cannot fund. Babalakin also called for the establishment of an Education Bank that would give loans to indigent students, saying such loans would cover tuition fees and provide for the students’ upkeep, adding that a condusive environment needs to be provided for students to bring out the best in them.

He said the loans should be repaid at no more than 5 percent interest rate and should be payable within 6 years when the student starts working, with no more than 10 percent of his or her salary going to loan repayment. According to him, the sums paid as school fees should also be channeled towards improving tertiary institutions

As long as Dr. Wale Babalakin remains the FG chief negotiator... The current ASUU strike will never be called off.

When the budget for a country has less than 10% for education yet defense is gulping more than education as if we are fighting war against North Korea and USA same time. Why won’t our education sector that should produce best brains dish out half baked unemployed youths? With the billions allocated to defense and NE intervention funds where some people are making billions I doubt if insurgency will ever stop in that region because that’s the cash cow for some elite.
