Gas Flaring Is Rising In The Niger Delta by Naijiant: 11:14pm On Nov 15, 2018
In Nigeria's Niger Delta, gas flares are killing crops, polluting water and damaging human health. The Nigerian government has promised to tackle the problem — but new data shows flaring has even gone up.

Flames as tall as 10-storey buildings burn day and night in the village of Ebedei, in Nigeria's Niger Delta. But the heat from these fires is neither soft nor warm, it's fierce and prickly.

The constant noise sends wild animals fleeing, and people must shout to be heard over the roaring flames. Fields of crops, once green, have turned yellow or stopped growing entirely. The village no longer enjoys the respite of cool or darkness of night.

In the oil-rich Niger Delta of southern Nigeria, 2 million people live within 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) of a gas flare. Below the flames, oil is being extracted. With the oil comes gas — considered by the oil industry to be a dangerous waste product to burned off in a process called gas flaring.

And this flaring is on the rise again, despite promises to reduce it.

There are a lot of de-flaring projects ongoing in the Niger Delta as we type here. The projects had been in the doldrums before now because of lack of funding occasioned by cash call debts and tragically low oil prices. However, with the eradication of the cash call regime in 2016 and increased cash flow to the IOCs, they're proceeding with the projects.

Also there's increased pressure on them from DPR and others who don't hesitate to issue hefty fines which the oil companies are loathe to pay.

Also, Nigeria is seeking to increase her LNG production from 22Mta to 30Mta which means the LNG trains will need a lot of gas so reducing the flares will actually turn money for these coys

If the tempo is sustained, we will see a drastic reduction in the volume of gas being flared very soon

Niger Deltas have really suffered for this country.

All the oil wealth, yet the government is deliberately stalling on policies that directly affect their health.

Fulanis are very wicked. Dependently cruel and abnormally entitled.
Thank you Niger Delta, for funding Buhari's son 200M Naira power bike. ILY.

Hmmm.....i like your words of wisdom.

We should however remember that a son of the soil, GEJ, was VP for 2 years, Acting president for 1 year and full executive president for 5 years. Did the Fulani's also stop him from doing something about his homeland?

Buhari supporters and senseless argument. Who built the only federal university in buhari state? Why didn't buhari build it when he ruled in 83
