Igbos Outside Southeast, Our Region's Poverty Index Is Rising! by superlightning: 9:55am On May 06, 2020 |
According to the recently released figures from National Bureau of Statistics, Anambra is the only state in the southeast with her poverty index within the 0-20% bracket. It has the least poverty index in the southeast. Imo and Abia follows in the poverty index ranging within 21-40% bracket. Enugu State surprisingly crashed and is above the 40% poverty index. Theirs is even inching towards 60%! Ebonyi State Poverty remains the highest and one of the highest in Nigeria with an index inching towards 80%. This is disturbing. Generally, our geo-political zone ranks third out of the six zones, tailing after South west and South south geopolitical zone. Please, I plead with igbos all over the country to THINK HOME. Stop aiding in the development Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, etc and start aiding the development of the SOUTH EASTERN STATES. Fine, make your money there but THINK HOME BIKO. Enugu is a poor state. Their rural areas are poverty-stricken but some mistakenly believe that Enugu city is representative of Enugu state. Economically, Abians are doing much better than Enuguites though it looks like Abia has been cursed with wicked leaders. Ebonyi is a backward state. Their ruthless governor is busy stealing for himself and his family while poverty and disease kills his people. Anambra state is not where it ought to be but that can change if their people can stop investing in Lagos. Imo is the only state with promise as our IGR and job creation is set to take a leap with the coming on stream of Shell gas and Waltersmith refinery which will create economic boom across the state. Owerri is currently the best city in southern Nigeria. 13 Likes |

If this poverty index is finally verified by the experiences of those on the ground, it will be the biggest wake up call for Igbos. But I am highly suspicious of the numbers... 3 Likes |

I am not an Igbo, I am a Yoruba man to the core but I think this write up is a wake up call to the Igbos at home and in diaspora. Build your people, invest in your land. This is an eye opener 23 Likes 1 Share |

Cyberterror: All those state you mentioned... both their rural and urban areas are still the most developed in Nigeria Other state in Nigeria have only their capital develop and maybe one or two cities.. the rest are ghost towns.. Some state have only dia capital developed... the rest of the state na ghost town.. Travel through Nigeria.. come back east and appreciate your igboness.. Some hardly step out of their region.. and will use few pictures to summarize a whole state. Some Dey shout gdp while others are developing na gdp be their own.. To some na population.. dem wan born plenty.. People that mock igbos and dish all this nonsense statistics are humans that have never left their enclaves.. so they’re living in 18 century and priding in wht no Dey... We must continue supporting eastern government... walahi if you travel through some regions in Nigeria you will appreciate Okezie ikpeazu ... even as he’s touted as the worst governor .. some are mean bad ... Abia people never see suffer.. you won’t understand.. suffering suffer hardship underdevelopment is the name of some regions.. but when they come online every thing is stew.. and the policy of AKU ruo uno must be encouraged .. 6 Likes 1 Share |

I did my NYC in Awgu, a hilly natural paradise in Enugu. The area has fine duplex and modern bungalows looping across the misty hills but I noticed that a lot of the indigenes come to camp looking for manual labour. The girls were willing to wash heaps of cloth for a paltry 500 naira. Despite the fact that The NBS boss is from the other side and has ulterior motives, we need to look inwards. We need to stop investing in Lagos or port and come back home. There maybe fine duplexes in Awgu but a significant part the indigenous people are indigent 16 Likes 1 Share |

horsepower102: In my honest opinion, the statistics are very wrong. I wouldn't know if the peope that collated the figures ever came down to the south east to see how things are going. I have lived in the south east for over 40 years, worked in every state in the south east and has been in every local government area. I was in 3 states of the south east only yesterday and will be to the remaining 2 states within this week. Its not yet uhuru in the south east yet, but we are going in the right direction. I see hope and promise in the south east. I see families getting richer, I see communities eradicating poverty in unison. We have shared palliative materials to many communities and some people are not even coming out to take them. Many people see the bags of rice and spaghetti as too small for them to bother coming out to the school field. The type of property boom happening in the south east amazed me daily, we have demand for new buildings and we have contracts for over 6 new buildings going on concurrently. People are still buying lands in the south east in this Corona lockdown! I have appointment with some people today to show them lands to buy in Enugu today, and they plan to start building houses. Most artisans are busy, most markets are experiencing huge sales, intact, I don't have too much reason to complain about the future of the south east. 26 Likes 8 Shares |

spyder880: The property boom might not reflect the GDP of the residents, I maybe wrong, that sort of scenario happen in Macau, China. In Awka, land x super expensive, structures are rising in leaps but are the owners resident in Anambra. Are they residing and running factories in Lagos? 13 Likes 1 Share |

How do you expect the Igbos to think home, when the wealth that they are using to even develop their villages, is from the commerce they are engaged in outside Igboland, within Nigeria or Abroad? How can you think home when you fled home to escape poverty? The best that can happen is to continue to work harder outside of home, to be financially empowered to send more money home. 10 Likes 2 Shares |

Igboe people can be funny sometimes. The same statistics that you always use to mock and lambast the North is now fake because it does not suit your tastes. Go to Zaria and see people who live in mud houses eating 3 good Square meals a day but of course, the statisticians wouldn't put that into consideration. That's the nature of it. It gives clues and not reality. You states are poor just like yobe and the rest. Deal with it 26 Likes 5 Shares |

What we lack in south east, especially Enugu is industry. The lackadaisical Governors we have in the state lack visions and Willingness to either build or encourage private investors to build. All you see in Enugu is Estate . will the citizens eat estate building. Unfortunately people like spyder is one of their supporter. The only Governor trying in industrial development is Dave umahi. 4 Likes |

horsepower102: NBS ... Nigeria is a funny country. They government knows the truth about Nigeria, but won’t say.. rather the will twist it to sustain propaganda 2012 Okonjo went to senate and make a special case on opening southeast for robust economic development and their generating federal revenue. Agenda against the development of south east and by extension south south..is an arrangement to weak this regions and growth.. level. South south produces 89% of Nigeria revenue.. how many cities in south south is developed with enough federal presence? And active federal parastatals. How many of the south south natives occupy offices in those federal establishments in the state.. From delta to riVers, akwaibom. Bayelsa.. cross rivers? They will be smart to tell us to hold our governors accountable.. with the huge allocation hey collect But they’re busy with Lagos — Kano railway They’re busy upgrading MMA,Kano,Jigawa,Maiduguri, airports .. down south they will tell you RiVers airport is an international airport and functioning Is riVers the only state in Nigeria deltA? What’s holding the same Federal government to establish a world class sea port in the Nigeria DeltA region But will conveniently build two and sustained in Lagos They will tell you that the hostility in niger deltA chased out company headquarters to Lagos Meanwhile southwest is rated a hostile region I’m using my area as example.. for you to understand what igbos are in for.. If an international body should conduct same samples .. results will be different.. and correct, but that changes nothing in Nigeria index.. they will always dish same or modify version propaganda anytime they do dish theirs. For me.. I’ve traveled around this country and seen things for my self.. likewise many like me. Any statistics from Nigeria don’t mean anything to us, even to the international community. The leave among us and understand our politics. Is just to massage ego. Nothing meaningful. Since those statistics of high gdp.. poverty index, poor states rich states. What’s has changed.. in those regions? Bro understand this country and laugh at whatever the dishes.. International community treat Nigerians, how our leaders treat us.. 5 Likes 2 Shares |
