I say part privatisation might just be the way forward for Nigerian higher education.
ASUU has successfully depicted a grim picture of the public uni system. However, this rot isn't peculiar to Higher education.

Our healthcare system is rottened, our secondary schools are rottened, our physical infrastructure is rottened, our power sector is rottened, our security apparatus is rottened so it is impractical to have a sudden surge in budgetary allocation to universities without having negative impact across other sectors.

This is why ASUU must put on its thinking cap and seek for ways to partner with the private sector to generate funds. One of the beauty of university autonomy is that you must ensure your very own survival.

The average federal school is richer than the average private school yet the rot is more apparent at the federal level - this is because the vast majority of problems do not have funding at its core. Even if the problem is funding then respond by cutting enrollment down.

Example: If govt gives Unilorin funding that can adequately support 2,000 new students, Unilorin shouldn't admit 10,000 students. Only admit the number of students ur funding can support. It is not the business of a university to increase access for the Nigerian populace, let the Education ministry worry about that. If Education Ministry ask for higher enrollment, you should ask for higher funding.

One of the reasons why UI is highly rated is that it has a lower student enrolment than its counterpart. So Unilorin collects a little lower in FG allocation but has 150% more enrollment. UI while cutting enrollment for students did not cut staff size therefore govt is forced to pay more to UI than Unilorin which is twice bigger.

Caltech(USA) has just 3,000 students yet ranked top 10 Globally
Rice university(USA)has 3000 students yet ranked top 100 globally.
POSTECH(SKorea)admits 300 students yearly yet top 100 globally
Ecole Normale Superierue de cashan(France) has 1,631 students yet top 100 globally.

The truth is this. Education is made up of three levels: primary, secondary and tertiary and of the three the worst is the public primary schools then the public secondary schools. It's amazing that even ASUU staff cannot send their children to public primary schools but can send their children to public universities. That's an inverted system. The government should intervene and properly fund the primary and secondary school system first . In Lagos , no one in the middle class or even lower class can send their children to public primary schools cos of the rot. Even most federal government colleges are living on past glory. Imagine in an ideal situation where I give birth to two children and I don't have to pay a Kobo in school fees from primary to secondary because the public schools are quality and standard compared to the current situation where I pay 300 thousand naira per year in a private primary school cos the public ones are rubbish only for the child to get to Unilag and be paying 30 thousand per year . Government should first of all fund heavily the primary and secondary before ASUU even says a word . Any parent that doesn't pay school fees for 12 years of primary and secondary school due to high quality of the public schools can be made to pay a premium for tertiary education not the other way around. I don't know any country in the world where public tertiary education is given a higher priority than quality public primary and secondary education. Every child needs primary and secondary to succeed. You don't necessarily need tertiary education especially University education to succeed in life .

Nigeria doesn't have a working education system yet. The more reason they attach importance to the paper over the expected skill & knowledge.

ASUU are liars, all the funds they've been getting why not use it for the projects to make us have standard educational facilities, instead they will share the money within them self and when the money finish they go on strike.

This is so pathetic and disheartening. Our education system is nothing to write home about. No wonder Nigeria Tertiary institution are no where to be found on world ranking list. The worst part is that our leaders are creating more universities instead of using those funds used in creating more institutions to upgrade our institutions that are not up to standard.
I remember that Jonathan created more universities which indirectly means he created more problems for Nigeria.
The sector needs a complete reform.

The problem is so deeply rooted that it cannot be solved. This is why Nigeria is not called a Failing, but Failed state. Failure everywhere.
