The operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a Nigerian businessman and two Chinese industrialists in connection with an unlawful importation of cocaine valued at N4bn at Tin Can Port, Lagos.

The Chairman/Chief Executive, NDLEA, Mr. Ahmadu Giade, told journalists at a press conference on Monday that with the apprehension of the barons, the agency had smashed a major international drug syndicate that smuggled cocaine from South American countries to West Africa.

He said the arrest followed the interception of 450.400 kilogrammes of cocaine unlawfully imported from Chile, noting that the cocaine seizure, which had an estimated street value of over N4bn, was the second largest ever in the country.

Giade, who declined to give the names of the barons for fear that it might jeopardise further investigations, described the seizure as a major breakthrough in the country’s counter-narcotics efforts.

He said, “The entire operation was intelligence-based and professionally executed. This is the second largest seizure of cocaine next to the 14.2 tonnes made at the same port in 2006.

“The quantity is frightening and the street value paints a horrendous picture of the illicit drug trade. Apart from the estimated street value in the country, the value would have doubled in Europe. The seizure is exciting to us. It is also a wake-up call for all hands to be on deck.”

Something is being done right in the NDLEA. It should be studied, its by far the most effective security agency in the country. I mean, the coke beat German Security yet was intercepted here, and this is not the first time. Thumbs up.

Six Enugu Lawmakers Linked To N4b Drug Haul• Three Barons Arrested
By Wisdom Patrick, Senior Correspondent, Lagos

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, disclosed on Monday that he has placed all his officials on red alert against drug barons at all entry points to the country.

The reason is obvious, he said, because “politicians need money to prosecute elections, therefore they can do anything to get that money.”

Giade was speaking at a press conference in Lagos during the parade of a container with over 450 kilogrammes of cocaine seized at the Tin Can Island Port, Apapa – linked to six members of the Enugu State House of

Assembly.

The cocaine was concealed in the plywood which served as the wooden floor of the container.

Giade said some barons, including a Chinese, who are the brains behind the illicit business have been arrested.

He put the street value of the substances at over N4 billion, and charged NDLEA officials to be extra-vigilant in the fight against hard and banned substances, especially as political activities hot up countywide.

He described the seizure as a major breakthrough, stressing that it is the second largest after the 14.2 tonnes intercepted at the same port in 2002.

He explained that the operation was intelligence based, recalling that the container had already been cleared out of the port before his men traced it to the owner’s warehouse.

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Tin Can Island police Command said six Enugu State lawmakers are the masterminds of the contraband.

A police source said the clearing agent is being held by the NDLEA; whose Director General, Lanre Ipinmisho, also confirmed that some people were arrested in Enugu, Ibadan, and Kano.

“So many people have been fingered in the recent seizure of the huge importation of cocaine through Tin Can Port in Apapa and investigation is on,” Ipinmisho disclosed in a telephone interview on Sunday.

The container also contained used items like tyres, electronics, and medications, among others.

An NDLEA official said the police have handed over the case file, and “the suspect, who is a clearing agent, has made confessional statement to the NDLEA operatives.

“The suspect said he was only contracted to clear the container and he had no idea of its content. He has given us the names of the lawmakers and we have contacted three of them, but the remaining ones have switched off their handsets. Investigation is on.”

However, the port police have expressed fears that the case may go the way of others.

“They want to kill the case, like they always do. But this one would surely claim somebody’s job, if they try their dirty deal,” he warned.

This article got me thinking - Is Nigeria a Transit Point for cocaine or has she become a Net User like United States?

Nigeria's been a MAJOR transit point since before the days when Pablo Escobar was slinging 8balls and O's on the street corners of Medllin! How u think most of your Generals became Billionaires, stealing public money? Try moving tens of kilos of heroin and coke per person, unhindered, using Diplomatic Pouches; 10 kis per person, 50 people at a time, three times a month . . . .  Shows how little yall know about your own country!

With respect to the gist that the coke beat German security, it may be entirely so.Such quantity of drug would definitely have
been tracked globally until it arrives its final destination. the Germans would deliberately allow it sail through, since its headed for Nigeria, its
supposed final destination. That's the only way the "owners" can be caught! if the consignment was intercepted in Germany, the owners
here in 9ja would simply have disappeared without trace. kudos to NDLEA all the same.

what about the $16 billion dollars power scam, 2.5 billion car scam, and endless scams by pdp, who cares about 4 billion naira when nigerian leaders embezzle as much as $10 billion dollars monthly. they only slam justice on small thieves. our leaders are the number caocaine pushers, they denied nigerians what truly belong. and what happens to the cocaine?
