The federal government will commence the sack of unqualified teachers in the country by January 2020, following expiration of deadline given to them to upgrade before the end of December, 2019.

The Registrar of Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Prof Josiah Olusegun Ajiboye disclosed this in Abuja, while speaking to journalists.

Prof Ajiboye said: “The government took a position long time ago that anyone who is not qualified or registered and licensed by TRCN by December 2019, will no longer be allowed to stand in front of our children in classrooms.”

While noting that so far TRCN has registered up to two million qualified teachers across the country, he said any teacher who is not registered by January 2020, will be removed from the classroom.

He said over the years, they have sensitised the people on the need to find a way of getting themselves qualified before the deadline.

The TRCN boss noted that they have carried out census in six states, saying, “we are going to start with those states because we now have the data base of those who are qualified and those who are not registered.”

According to him, the six states include Nasarawa, Ogun, Ebonyi, Jigawa, Cross River and Bauchi.

“We are going to start our implementation from those states and it is going to be a continuous process because after those states we will continue with other states, until we root out unqualified teachers in the country,” he said.

The Registrar maintained that the minimum qualification required for anyone to practice teaching in the country remains Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and that as a qualified teacher, it is required that one registers with the council.

Let me believe that this is limited to teachers in primary and secondary schools, and NOT lecturers in universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and colleges of agriculture.

FG has no business running schools. Hand over all schools to states and LGs and focus on regulations and governance, please.

To the guy above me, removing of unqualified teachers should be of utmost priority and should not be compared to anything else as these teachers are the block builders of the new generation and if people have proper education they'd be able to elect better leaders and get rid of half-baked or corrupt leaders.

This issue should never be politicized as teachers are the core of any fundamental development of a nation.

The same politician(s) you seek to remove would have to be done by enlightened and educated citizens.

Teachers who have NCE and BEdu already.

This man wants Buhari to lose this election otherwise, he would have requested that no new teacher will be employed without TRCN.

Sack teachers and lose election.

How have the states run the ones they have already? No state owned school in Nigeria today is standard. Give them more to mess it all up.

Schooling up to senior secondary level should be free for those who want to attend public schools, that’s why the states should run these schools. But FG or states should not be in the business of running Colleges and Universities

Lecturers in the Colleges of Education are included. It is even mandatory for their promotion. However, lecturers in Universities, Polytechnics and Monotechnics are not within the domain of TRCN.

For lecturers in tertiary institutions, the ultimate teaching qualification is the PhD, not an NCE, BEd or any other teaching qualification or license. Only Colleges of Education emphasise teaching qualifications as a prerequisite for appointment and promotion.

My opinion differs from the majority of people on this thread.

Is the problem with our public education system unqualified teachers or a confused political system that doesn't have it's priorities straight.

In capitalist America, quality primary and secondary school education is provided by the government to all citizens. In communist China, the same applies.
This is not a matter of whether the federal government or state government should be responsible.

A standard classroom should not have more than 25 students to a teacher. This is necessary.

Apart from education, the core functions of governments include health and security. Every other thing is Jara.

Today, parents struggle to get their kids admitted into unity schools. Why hasn't the government built more schools. Do they expect to provide the same amount of service given to 40 million Nigerians in 1960 to 200 million Nigerians in 2018?

The government would complain about lack of funding but what are they spend 90 percent of our oil revenue on unproductive public and civil servants. What percent of Nigerians work for the government? About 10 percent. So all the benefits of our wealth should only go to 10 percent of Nigerians?

Shouldn't the government first reduce it's unproductive civil servants in its various unproductive MDA'S first before reducing unqualified teachers in its extremely important education sector.
