I am not surprised. University of Abuja is a notable centre of corruption in Nigeria. FG should address the Universities' problems but the universities as well must be probed on their past & present spendings. Ezekwesili has lost her dignity & relevance after visiting the grand father of corruption in Nigeria, Babangida

I stand with ASUU.

How can you hold an anticorruption event, in a corruption center.

If uniabuja is a corruption centre, who are those perpetrating corruption in d school? Isn't d same ASUU members?

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Abuja chapter on Wednesday prevented Noble Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon Rtd and former Education Minister, Dr Oby Ezekwesili from speaking at an anti-corruption event.

The union led by its chairman, Dr Kasim Umaru, disrupted the event held at the University of Abuja.

Umaru told NAN in a telephone interview on Wednesday that they disrupted the programme because of the ongoing strike, adding that they have no regret for their actions.

He said such magnitude of programme could not hold in the institution because lecturers were also involved in the event.

“Those eminent personalities for the programme are all aware of our plight and did nothing, we disrupted the event because we are on strike,” he said.

The convener of the event and National Coordinator of African Initiative Against Corruption and Exam Malpractice AFICEM, Dr Francis Abioye regretted the action of the ASUU, saying they erred by disrupting the event.

Abioye said the management of the university had earlier approved the institution’s auditorium as venue for the anti corruption programme.

He said the programme was not an academic event, but was organized to educate Nigerians especially students against corruption and related cases.

In his remarks, the university Students’ Union Government (SUG), President, Mr Chizurum Anabaronye said the development was regrettable and disappointing.

“It is unfortunate because students would have benefited immensely in the programme considering the personalities involved in the programme.

“Wole Soyinka is a person every student wants to see and the only opportunity to hear him speak was disrupted, we mobilized the students for the event but later communicated to them on the development,” he said.

One of the facilitators and Osun High Court Judge, Justice Oloyode Folahanmi, who also spoke to NAN said AFICEM planned to celebrate the 2018 anti corruption day with a lecture on the `Benefits of Examination Ethics’ which was disrupted.

“The Noble Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka, other eminent persons and myself were to speak to Nigerian students on the need to abide by the rules guiding examination ethics.

“We are partners in progress, we feel the plight of ASUU and we want to fix Nigerian problem so it was wrong to disrupt the programme,” he said.

While calling on FG to address the demands of ASUU, Folahanmi said the reason for targeting students was because of the belief that quest for societal regeneration must begin with the youths.

They were worried that Wole Soyinka will say the truth that will blow up on their faces. Stupid people striking at the dead of time when presidential election is around the corner. ASUU and its other brothers are used as instruments to brain wash the vast majority of youths to vote for a bad choice

ASUU will never get better even if the government meet their present demands. Its a group of educated gangstars who are insatiable and covetious.
They teach students with such brutal irresponsibility, lack innovation, and have lost understanding of the very proffesion they teach. They are rust and irrelevant to the technological and economic development of the country.
South Korea became what it is today because of education. Education provided by lecturers without incentives from the government at that time. They hibernated inward and spent years building the leaders of tomorrow.

Why disrupt an event that has no government involvement?

This was a right move at the wrong event. ASUU should try disrupting APC presidential campaign events.

Don't mind the yeye ASUU members.

Student are stranded and jobless at home, instead of this lifeless Buhari to declare a state of emergency on the education sector, he is busy about his quest for a second term. And definitely, the reproduction rate will be accelerated as an idle mind is the devil's workshop, hence adding to the insane population that it currently can not take care of.
May we be liberated from the hands of those that don't care about us.
I pray Atiku comes to liberate us from this mismanagement that throws us into this sham and frequent strikes.

Pure bollocks. Keep supporting a political system that will enslave you and your generations yet unborn.

Which political system are u talking about?
Are we no more practicing democracy ?

That Article is for ASUU to wake up. They shouldn't ruin the future of this country by ki*llng the youths who are suppose to be educated today.
If the FG is not doing their bit.. of which they lack at the moment.. ASUU should be the one to put them right intellectually.
When was the last time ASUU sue the federal government?
When was the last time they discipline any of their members?

We all just have to behave properly, else we all go down.
God bless Nigeria
