‘’LANDING GIST’’

I
Now, getting to the immigration officer at the POE was traumatic for us because we had a terrible experience while trying to get dollars the day before our trip. The transfer we did to the BDC till now has not even impacted and neither has the funds been reversed back to our account so we only had cash of $2,000 on us for a family of three and with all the news of immigration officers being strict with showing POF we sha bolded up and met the guy, he asked how much we had and I said $2k the guy now looked at me and asked me again you said how much and I answered $2k

For those who are yet to land, when asked for POF, state how much you put in your application and then follow up with "but I only have x amount of cash on me"

Like someone has mentioned above, insufficient funds is enough for them to send you back.

Ethiopian Airline Flight ET910 wasn't Bad at all.
In flight entertainment was ok, though did really pay attention to it. Plane was maybe 40-50 filled. Plenty empty seats..

Thanks Cochtrane you are one of the key resource persons on this thread and I don't dispute your post. I didn't want to respond but to put things in perspective to avoid potential contention as I see @AZeD1 has also picked this insufficient POF thing.

Now, before my trip I never even intended carrying the cash of about $20k being POF for family of three on me it just happened that I had a bad experience when I tried buying the dollar I was to carry on me. Few days before the trip I had printed my bank statement and also collected receipt for treasury bill I still have, these amounts even exceeded my required POF. I did this because I envisioned they might ask proof of my total POF. Some people on this thread have even stated where they had to log into their mobile banking app to show evidence they had the money.

That being said please don't go confidently with few dollars without back up info on your financial status and expect some over zealous border officer won't ask you about your total POF.

What I meant in my post was that even if you don't carry the total physical cash on you, you fit still enter as there are hundreds of PRs a lot of whom I know that have crossed into canada without carrying in physical cash their total POF please. Showing account balance, investment certificate or account statement has been proven to work in different instances in addition to the physical cash you have on you.

cochtrane:

Interesting gist. Wish you the best in Canada!

I don't think the above is correct. Insufficient POF is usually enough reason to turn anyone back at the border. It's clearly spelt in the instructions, but is left to the discretion of the border officer. I'm sure the officers certainly felt you have enough POF (in the bank), but have only chosen to travel with smaller cash.

Yes, such person is eligible. Wise to take the eligibilty test on the CIC website though, as Nigerian BSc isn't the only requirement. This is the thread you need.

Your friend was right about the Alberta economy being affected by the low oil price. Calgary especially took a serious hit. I can't say how easy it is to get construction project management jobs in Calgary at the moment. If you insist on going to Alberta, you may be better off going to Edmonton. As per your madam's nursing profession, there is an oversupply of nurses in Calgary. Getting a stable nursing job in calgary after qualifying might be a challenge. Generally speaking, the demand for nurses are usually in small towns/cities. Still, one can't go wrong with a nursing degree in Canada if you do not restrict yourself to a location.

However, it is important to note that I am not writing off Calgary, since what works for mr A may not necessarily work for mr B and vice versa. While the oil sector is taking a hit and laying off people/people losing homes, the renewable energy industry is picking up steam. As bad as the Alberta economy is, two friends still bought ~ 2500 sq ft new homes in Calgary just last year. In summary, there are still other industries that do not depend on oil to thrive. In terms of jobs in Ottawa, I do not know anything about it's economy.

I really do not understand what you meant by "scanty community and mixing up". It is not true that people do not want to support others. You would find good and not so good people everywhere, irrespective of whether you stay in Ottawa or Calgary.

Good day sir, in one of your post I discovered that you work for Canadian government, in which department and how can one get a government job, does one need to know someone already working there, how did you apply and get the job, asking for a cousin thanks

Hello landed seniors! I have decided to carry myself enter here officially while waiting for COPR. My PPR story has been shared on the sister thread. Una Weldone here oh.

Please I need help from our experienced seniors here. I am a construction project manager with civil engineering background and about ten years experience in the construction industry. Before now, I have been doing some research on the best province for me to land with my Nurse Spouse. Came up with Vancouver BC and Calgary, Alberta as preferred places. But decided to chose Calgary because I read from some sites that Vancouver and BC is generally expensive and tough to survive.
I was chatting with a friend who currently lives in Ottawa Ontario yesterday and he was kinda discouraging me from going to Calgary but rather come join him in Ottawa. He mentioned reasons like fluctuation in oil whic I turn affect the entire Alberta economy, scanty communities which prevents one from mixing up, inability to easily get support from people as most calgarians are ‘mind ur business kinda people’ and all that. The truth is that apart from the fact that I personally don’t like to live in a place that is too busy like Lagos, I also don’t seem to believe there are construction opportunities from what I have seen so far in Ottawa as compared to Calgary, I may be wrong oh. But then, experienced people should please help me.

So I have brought this here for my ogas to help me chuck mouth and advice me oh before I go jogodo for Cannyland.

All what my friend was telling me was that I can easily get casual jobs almost immediately as I land and start looking for better job once I get settled.

Your suggestions and advise would be very appreciated.
@salford, @maternal, @joo2018, @einsteino and all the Oga patapatas, Biko make una helep me oh

Yes forget Vancouver. It's extremely expensive. I feel Alberta gets a bad wrap. Every province has a bread and butter economy. Oil is Alberta's bread and butter as it should be, but there's other types of industry there as well. Construction is usually on going in Canada. With population increase you'll constantly have new projects then of course you have maintenance as well. I'm not too educated about the construction industry as a whole, but there's always projects going on. As for your spouse nurse, she'll be fine wherever she goes once she's qualified. I'm curious to know how your friend came with the conclusion nobody helps each other in Calgary. I know a lot of good people from Calgary. I'd personally go to Calgary over Ottawa. And if things don't work out, grab your load and move to Ottawa.

Had the same issue and contact the Royal Bank of Canada and got this reply below

You can open your account before you arrive in Canada. In order to do so, you would simply need to submit your account application online
During the process you will be asked the question "Do you live in Canada"? Choose "No" as this will designate that you are currently a non-resident looking to open an account prior to your arrival.

Once you complete the application it will be sent to our International Banking Advisors who will follow up with you directly within 5 days to give you the information you need to have the account set up and be able to transfer funds to it before you arrive.

For more information on banking in Canada, please visit our Welcome to Canada page, at:

http://www.rbc.com/newcomers/

Wishing you all the best with your move to Canada!

Thanks for contacting us. We'll be happy to help you again if there's anything else you’d like to discuss.

Hi all, I was an active member in the former group.

I tried reading through the 30 pages, but was forced to share my testimony the moment I came across this.

I started my application on 23rd Aug, 2014, by Dec 20, 2014 my application was sent to ACCRA for further processing.

To cut the long stories short, I just received my passport request this last December. Accra is very very slow.

I applied as a single bachelor, within the moment of waiting, I already got married and my child is almost 3.

For people who are waiting, it will surely come to pass, just a little patience and ensure to request for your GCMS notes to be certain about what is going on. It will end in praises.

Any electrical engineer in the group but specialising as a network engineer. Please I have a lot of questions so I can be fully prepared before landing. Thanks

Hello, I am an in house legal practitioner and I am planning on coming to write the NCA exams in May. I just read from your response that the exams can be written in other jurisdictions so, does it mean I will be referred to these places other than Canada? I am also planning to go to the embassy next month for the visa to enable me write the exams and so what's the implication of doing so, if there are other centers apart from Canada?
Thanks while awaiting your response

An extract from NCA page

"Can I write my exams in a location other than Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, or Vancouver?

Applicants may be able to arrange to write examinations in other locations within Canada and in other countries, at their own expense. Further information on approved sites can be obtained by contacting the Examinations Manager at exam@flsc.ca. Not all requests will be approved particularly where a site already exists. Sites will not be approved in regions covered by the six cities listed above."

Good to know that WES ECA is now favorable and very economical to use. Back in the day we used IQAS.

I think you should send WES an email telling them your concerns and how you would want the wordings to be... dunno if it'll work but you could try at least! ( sorry for the late reply)

Hi Blessing, for those of us that used IQAS, how do we send our transcripts to NCA. Does the institution send it directly? Or do we have to go through WES?
