ISLAM AND INDUCED ABORTION

Abortion is the cessation of Pregnancy or fetal development, To we Muslims Abortion is totally Haram(forbidden) but it is also permissible in some certain circumstances.

Abortion can be in two forms which are •Spontaneous and •Induced abortion, ΦSpontaneous abortion is also commonly known Miscarriage which occurs naturaly as result of some medical issues or so and ΦInduced abortion is a diferent case because it doesn't occur naturaly, it is a medical procedure that terminate pregnancy by removing/flushing the foetus especialy through surgery, it is a non contraceptive form of birth control.


Abortion is totally not accepted in some countries due to the rate at which women aging 15-40yrs loosed their lives as a result of abortion. Many people believe is that only single ladies go for Abortion because of unwanted pregnancies, but some married women also engage in abortion for some reasons maybe if the pregnancy is unplanned, they are scared, and so on as they would say. Some of these women will go to local "Abortionist" with unsterile environment and equipment (mostly in undeveloped countries) which in turn causes them severe infections which leads to infertility or even death in most cases. Some even take abortion pills and local herbs to "flushitout".
Medically Abortion is suppose not to cause death or infertility if done at the right time, by an authorized specialist and the right place.


Islamically, induced abortion is equivalent to taking off a soul or two souls (twin foetus) and life in Islam is equal and valued, because the sanctity of life is expressed in many verses in the holy book of Islam among them are
^Q5:32
'"...that whoever kill a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely......'",
^Q17:33 "'And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden..."' and many more.

Although Islam gives high priority to sanctity but some Islam scholars agree that Induced abortion is permissible if there are valid reasons, but according to
'"Al-Baqarah Q2:228
...and it is not lawful for them to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs if they believe in Allah and the Last Day....'"

On the basis of this verse some Sages concluded that abortion is unlawful except in very narrow cases. Another set of scholars would say it is permissible to abort under some circumstances provided that only if the pregnancy is less than 40days or 42days (some shafi jurist) or 120days (some shafi & Hanafi's jurist) but they all contended that unless justified by a health necessity or else abortion is wrong even for married lady, abortion is reprehensible.

√. Whether the pregnancy is less than 120days or more than, abortion is permissible if foetus mother's life is in danger and medically this is known as "Therapeutic" due to the fact that mother's life is danger as a result of an illness or a defect in the foetus
In cases where the mother's life is in danger Islam allows abortion to save the mother because Islam sees this as the "lesser of two evils" and there is a general principle in Islamic law of choosing the lesser of two evils, Abortion is regarded as a lesser evil in this case because:
∆The Mother is the originator of the foetus
∆The Mother's life is well established
∆The Mother is part of a family
∆Alowing the Mother to die would also kill the foetus in most cases.


√. Abortion for the sake of the baby is also permitted if it is confirmed in the early period of pregnancy that the foetus suffer bad effect that can't be treated and will cause sufering to the child, provided the pregnancy is less than 120days that is foru(4) months.
Though some sages disagree to this but not all, some babies are born and right from their birth they are not healthy as result of some defects, which makes them suffer so many ilness and some of these babies die at early months or days of their birth. So if such defect have been detected at the early period of pregnancy, aborting it would be the good option, provided the pregnancy is less than 120days because you would safe the child from sufering a life time defect which wil prevent the child from living a normal life.

Meanwhile some people's thought is that the more children they have the more they might not be able to provide for their Progeny or the more poor they will be and many of many has indulge in abortion in fear of this, and the rate at which married women engage in family planning can be a reference to this, majority are just in fear of poverty meanwhile Quran act condemned this ideology act in Quran Al-Isra' Chapter 17 verse 31
وَلَا تَقْتُلُوٓا۟ أَوْلَٰدَكُمْ خَشْيَةَ إِمْلَٰقٍۖ نَّحْنُ نَرْزُقُهُمْ وَإِيَّاكُمْۚ إِنَّ قَتْلَهُمْ كَانَ خِطْـًٔا كَبِيرًا
'"And do not kill your children for fear of poverty We provide for them and for you. Indeed, their killing is ever a great sin'"
To engage in Abortion because the family fear poverty is a great sin, some married ones would even give excuses that ''"Though am truly married but it would disturb my Schooling or career pursue.

√. Some Scholars stated that Abortion where the Mother is a victim of rape is permissible in the first 120days of the pregnancy.

But some scholars disagree with aborting a pregnancy because the foetus is as a result of Fornication or Adultery in this case the mother wasn't force, she indulge in it wilingly and knowing the result might be pregnancy she then has no excuse to Abort it, even one of the greatest of all sins equivalent to killing all mankind but raping them regardless their genital or your genital status. Why not stay away from any routes that can lead to this for Quran warn us in Al-Isra' Quran chapter 17 verse 32
وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلزِّنَىٰٓۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فَٰحِشَةً وَسَآءَ سَبِيلًا
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way'"

Like a common saying in my language tone '"Ró ki omasè daju sè ki o owa maró lo'" meaning that '"Think of not to do it is better than thinking after doing'"
And chastity is the key to prevent unwanted pregnancies,
