The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has urged politicians and parties to focus more on how to realise their electoral goals in 2019 rather than paying attention to unnecessary issues.

The Lagos State Chairman of IPAC, Mallam Shakirudeen Olofin, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday.

Olofin was reacting to Thursday’s appointment of Mrs Amina Zakari by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as its Head of Collation Centre for the 2019 elections and to the criticisms it generated in some quarters.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has faulted Zakari’s appointment, saying it was a step by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to subvert the will of the people in 2019.

In a statement issued by the PDP spokesman, Mr Kola Ologbodiyan, on Thursday, the party alleged that Zakari was a blood relation of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Zakari’s new role, the party alleged, was to protect the president’s interests in 2019.

Olofin, however, said that the criticisms that had trailed Zakari’s appointment were unneccessary and mere distractions.

He said politicians and parties should rather spend time perfecting their strategies on winning the general elections rather than being pre-occupied by issues that should not concern them.

“We think the criticisms and controversies that have trailed the appointment of Zakari are unnecessary because it is not within the powers of political parties to appoint people for INEC.

“In a football match, the teams do not decide or bother about who the referee is. It is never done. Rather, they focus on how to win the match.

“The parties should be more focused and leave all these distractions. They should be on the drawing board planning for victory. They should leave INEC and Zakari to do their jobs,” he said.

Furthermore, Olofin said it was unfair to claim Zakari got the appointment because she was the president’s blood relation.

He pointed out that the she had always been in INEC where she even acted as the Chairman of the commission after the exit of Prof. Attahiru Jega.

Olofin added that IPAC believed Zakari’s appointment was not an aberration as she had also headed the commission’s ICT Department, which, he said, was related to her new responsibility.

The IPAC chairman urged political stakeholders to co-operate with INEC to deliver credible elections and refrain from acts that could create tension ahead of the polls.

Olofin also advised all eligible voters to actively participate in the electoral process to ensure the emergence of leaders of their choice.

INEC NOT ONLY NEEDS TO BE NEUTRAL, IT NEEDS TO MAKE ITSELF BE SEEN AS NEUTRAL.

YOU DON'T GO TO THE UNIVERSITY TO LEARN THIS.

INEC MUST REMOVE THE WOMAN FROM THAT POSITION NOW.

STOP THE DECEPTION.

DON'T MAKE NIGERIA A BANANA REPUBLIC.

Rubbish. It is right to complain about her appointment to such a sensitive position. Even in the court of law a judge is removed when a party is a suite before the judge has no confidence in him or her. She must go

In this case the referee can't and would never be fair if the one who gave him the job is one of the players... No matter how we want to look at it this woman's appointment will only favour the presidency and the appointment isn't just fair

Goodluck Jonathan and PDP appointed Amina Zakaria as INEC commissioner and not Buhari. Amina Zakaria also supervised the 2011 elections where Goodluck Jonathan defeated Buhari. PDP should be more concerned with what Atiku is still doing in Dubai few weeks to the elections. Is this how to send Buhari /Jubrin to Daura?

Lagos branch of IPAC are inarguably Tinubu's stooge. Any right thinking person that doesn't see d impending danger in appointing a presidential candidate's niece to head a sensitive component of election must visit a psychiatrist. By her position as d Chief Collation officer all d RECs at d states will owe their allegiance to her body language and anyone not ready to toe d line she dictates will be marked out as an enemy.

Heard a lot spoken about this matter. My take is simple.
It is clear that the interest of individuals has become the order of the day at the expense of institutional building. This is against the backdrop of folks who have asserted that the appointment doesn't undermine the functions of INEC in any way. Then why did Mr. President not sign the electoral bill to make this assertion valid.

You cannot avoid an action that will strengthen an institution then later watch as another action which weakens the same institution is made without wondering if indeed the interest of individuals supercedes that of the institution. And what makes an institution if not the interests of the stakeholders, the owners of such an institution.

In black Africa and Nigeria in particular we seem to have this understanding that institutions are mere appendages of those in charge and they exist only to project the wills of those who happen to have the controlling power. We find it strange to believe for instance that if you run a bank that almost the entire worth of the business belongs to the very folks that come through the doors everyday some in flip flops. Not until they trigger a walk out are they taken serious.

The policeman acts as if he is answerable only to his police superiors. Only when the tax dollars wane and his unit is cut in half does he realise his boss only exists because of the tax payer. Same with the entertainer or sportsman and his fans, and so on.

The institution called INEC only exists to organize a means by which the people of Nigeria elect their leaders, period. It does not belong to Mr. President, his political party or his government. It belongs to the people whose views matter and when they have no confidence that they truly own it because it gravitates to the sole ownership of a certain individual or group then it loses credibility and this begins to implode as an institution. How many people today have the confidence to call INEC really INDEPENDENT....

This government is killing our institutions. If there is any legacy that is most important, this is it. Because roads will eventually develop potholes, airports will eventually become obsolete, hospitals will become outdated and ineffective, schools will grow and outsource, even investors will come in and cash out.... but institutions remain forever and are expected to outlive regime after regime, government after government.

We know it is extremely hard for Nigerians to be visionaires and to plant the trees their unborn children will sit under but if this cycle of suffering has to end one day in the future then we must start the battle here, to fight for the establishment of these institutions and to take them back from these folks who have no serious intentions of making a future beyond themselves.

In any sane society passing through the rough seas we find ourselves, the society will collective rise and simply say, No. We cannot accept this.
