SO WHAT DOES SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO SWIM DO TO KEEP FLOATING IF THEY FALLS INTO WATER?
Was just going through that topic "Why dead bodies float and the living sink". Please i sincerely want to know what a person can do at least to keep floating if they accidentally falls into water until they get help because sometimes i travel via water ways and to be frank i don't know how to swim. 1 Like |

First of all I will advice you to learn how to swim because floating alone cannot save you because you can only float for so long and then you have to swim to shore.
To float
- Stay calm and don't be scared - Control your breathing. You can only float for as long as you hold your breath so hold your breath in and breathe out slowly while on your back.
That is basically it 4 Likes |

When it comes down to it swimming is hard, be very careful near water if you can’t swim.
If you walk into the water and pass your dept you could drown by struggling on its surface before sinking but if you suddenly dropped dead into the water from a height or violently you might drown before resurfacing because you’ve already sunk too deep, get knocked out or might run out of oxygen to keep brain and reflex functions while in the water to even struggle.
What’s easy is floating. Anybody can float no matter your size. It’s just knowing how to do it that’s the key. See my own style of floating.
Sit down on the floor with both your legs stretched out in front of you and all toes pointing upwards, done? Now stretch out both your hands in front of you with palms facing downwards, done? Now tilt your head all the way back until you’re staring at the ceiling, done? Now hold it for a minute, That right there is the posture you’d put your. Did your body ache? Yes because swimming is a sport, an exercise that involves all joints and muscles in your body being active.
Now for movements you’d make to stay afloat.
Imagine you’re in a palace and servant to a king. A no nonsense king. It’s a very hot day and you are on (toshiba duty) to keep him cool.
Now there’s a flat broad leather fan you’d be holding to fan your king. You see the way those servants hold it to ‘fan’ the king sitting on his throne? Yes that’s the movement your hands will be making with your palms facing downward, fingers opened up flat and wide (like a frogs feet) and flapping in unison. Remember that both hands must flap in a parallel motion in the water and must be flapping at full speed. You’d better flap with your vigor as a first time floater just as the servant will flap to cool his hot angry king on a good day so as not to ‘lose his head’.
Now for your legs feet. While in that sitting position draw both legs up towards your chest with your feet still touching the floor as you do it (drag both feet on the floor and your knees to your chest). Now stretch your legs out flat out again so they are both resting on the floor with your toes pointing upwards. You see that motion, you will be doing it again but rapidly. In fact you’d be doing so fast you’d be looking like a kangaroo doing 100m race if you know you want to be on top the water.
Your head will be bent backwards but instead of the seeing your ceiling you’d be looking up on the water ahead of you taking breaths on the surface while your limbs do all the fanning and kicking.
If you can attain that posture on the water Your legs and feet, hands and palms will be forming a current under your floating torso which will keep your chest and head on the surface of the water. You’d also be able to move front and back and also turn left and right by tiny adjustments to the way your limbs fan and kick under you.
With this method you be floating and swimming in no time. Just know that everyone has their way but this is mine and someone thought me to use it at the time.
If I swim in front of you I’d look like a dog swimming in water. It’s funny but It stuck. It works and It saves lives so you need to Learn it too. Take 500 naira to a pool with friends and try it out. After learning to float You’d be swimming in no time.

I don't pray you encounter that but if you do, kindly do the following:
1. Gently lie flat on the water body with your face facing the heavens.
2. Start singing the song "it is well, it is well with my soul"
If you follow this two steps, then it will be only a matter of minutes and you shall be saved! 1 Like |

Since your job takes you on water , learn swimming If you are in Lagos , airport hotel is the best for you . I learnt swimming In less than 9 months , every Fridays Now , I go to the deepest part of the pool 25ft. Floating won't take you far in any water body , no matter how good you are in swimming. Ability to swim inside water holding your breath is what makes you a good swimming . Floating can only be done intermittently, or else , you get tired and gas out |
