The completion of the largest floating oil platform in the world, Egina, would be an achievement for any yard

JANUARY 7, 2019

With the successful completion of the Egina Floating Production Storage Offloading (FPSO) unit and the achievement of First Oil in the facility, Samsung Heavy Industries, together with partners, could be justified in spending time looking back with pride.

According to a statement by the company at the weekend, the completion of the largest floating oil platform in the world, Egina, would be an achievement for any yard. It is all the more extraordinary given this is the first ship fabricated by the $300 million fabrication and integration facility, which itself was created to build this ship. “A number of records were broken during construction.

This is the first ever project to meet Nigeria’s demanding new standards for “local content”, which in simple terms means Nigerian-owned business delivering work in Nigeria.

This project went further than just that: Nigerian parts and expertise were even flown to Samsung’s headquarters in Korea to be installed in the early stages of construction of the Egina before it was sailed to Lagos for final construction,” the statement explained. Nigeria ships fewer oil cargoes to US “This success story has been made possible through Samsung Heavy Industries’ belief in the potential of Nigerian companies and workers to deliver to their tough, exacting standards.

Over 9.7 million hours of time have been spent by the Nigerian workforce, with over 6,000 Nigerians in employment on the project at its peak via Samsung and its partners and subcontractors,” the statement added. “Perhaps even more exciting than this direct opportunity for the best companies and workers is the potential it opens up for the country as a whole.

As we all know, the oil and gas industry is growing across the whole of Africa, and that means many more floating oil platforms and other pieces of large equipment need to be repaired, maintained and built,” the company said.

Before Samsung’s fabrication and integration yard (known as the SHI-MCI yard) was completed, the only choice was to complete this work outside of Africa, removing opportunity and investment from Nigeria’s shores. “Now, the choice is clear: Nigeria is home to a world-class yard and is standing ready to take on the next challenge. Is this the end of Samsung’s ambitions for Nigeria? Not at all.

Their vision is a future of extraordinary growth and opportunity, building on their now-proven model for heavy involvement of local companies and local workforce talent. The combination of Korean efficiency and expertise, fused with Nigerian talent and passion, presents limitless possibilities for a future repairing, maintaining and building high value ships to serve needs in Africa and beyond – just watch this space,” the company added..

Oh please just shut up. The Egina Field was discovered in 2003. The first well was completed in 2015 and the first oil got to surface just last week. What has GEJ got to do with it.

It's very annoying when you narrow minded people come to lay claim to what you know nothing about.

The construction of modules integated into the FPSO in Nigeria started in 2015. The FPSO only arrived Nigeria in 2017 or early 2018 and the pre-fabricated modules were incorporated.

Approval for the project was taken shortly after successful exploration wells were drilled. The was already a field development plan for Egina as early as 2009. Was GEJ your president in 2009?

Look, i'm not one of you that licks the asses of GEJ or Buhari...Facts are sacred, stick to it.

Total Upstream Nigeria Ltd. got its approval from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. in 2013 to award the main engineering, procurement, and construction contracts for development of the Egina field offshore in block OML 130.

So what then are you talking about then, who was your President in 2013 ?

Drilling to develop egina field start 2015 and over 30 wells have been drilled and the first oil produced was few days after Xmas of 2018. GEJ or PMB I don't care.
Engina is starting far earlier beyond schedule. The projection for egina was 2020 for it first production. But with d efficiency of total, his drilling crew and close monitoring of NNPC and DPR. EGINA is producing 200,000 bpd as at today.

Thank GEJ cos the project began during his administration... GEJ pushed to have the fabrication done in Nigeria rather than South Korea. Buhari has nothing to do with this

It pays to be quiet sometimes on certain issues that involve GEJ and Atiku. GEJ, in his sober moments could be receptive to good proposals/policies but sleeps on the seat of governance when drunk thereby giving circling vultures like Atiku, Anenih and their likes room to pounce. Elgina, though awarded during GEJ (that was the much he knew about it, anyway) it was solely a JVC project. While all this was taking place, the vultures led by the fugitive was circling above.. Soonafter, the THIEF IN CHIEF, ATIKU himself, zoomed in and pounced. ThankGod for the timely coming of PMB, Elgina would have gone the way of NITEL, Nigerian Airway.

How scam sipped into $3.8bn Egina FPSO Project
.NNPC, Samsung in alleged plot to hijack $214m Local Content funds
.Intels, Atiku, Anenih, Transport Minister, others fingered
