Camila is the eponymous debut studio album by Cuban-American singer and songwriter Camila Cabello.Work on the album began in January 2017, following Cabello's departure from the girl group Fifth Harmony. The project was initially announced as The Hurting. The Healing. The Loving. with Cabello's debut solo single "Crying in the Club" intended as the lead single, but was later changed to simply Camila with "Havana" as the proper lead single due to the rising success of the song. The song became an international success, reaching number one in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, Poland, Scotland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It also reached the top 10 in a number of countries, including Austria, Belgium, Colombia, Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, and Switzerland. Primarily a pop and R&B record, the album incorporates elements of Latin music.[1][2][5] Camila was executive-produced by Frank Dukes, with additional work from Skrillex and the Futuristics, among others. Cabello also worked with artists such as Sia, Charli XCX, and Ed Sheeran on tracks that were later scrapped.
Camila has been met with positive reviews from contemporary music critics, most of whom commended the Latin influences and ballads featured. Commercially, it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States.[6] "Never Be the Same" was released as a promotional single in December 2017, and was officially serviced for radio airplay the following January as the album's second single, reaching the top 10 in several countries. A remixed version of "Real Friends" featuring rapper Swae Lee was released in August 2018, which was released a promotional single. This was followed by an orchestral version of "Consequences" as the album's third and final single in October.[7][8][9][10][11] Cabello promoted the album through a number of interviews and televised performances, embarked on the Never Be the Same Tour, and served as an opening act on Taylor Swift's Reputation Stadium Tour.
Cabello released the songs "Real Friends" and "Never Be the Same" on December 7, accompanying the pre-order for the album.[119] "Real Friends" served as the first official promotional single for the album due to "I Have Questions" and "OMG" being scrapped from the final track listing; "Never Be the Same" was announced as the project's second single.[120] She released a music video for the song on December 29, 2017; it features clips of Cabello throughout 2017, including live performances and scenes from the "Crying in the Club" and "Havana" music videos.[121] "Never Be the Same" was released for radio airplay on January 9, 2018.[122] It has, thus far, entered the top ten in some countries as Australia, Ireland and United Kingdom,[123] and has peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.[124] An orchestral version of "Consequences" was released on October 9, 2018 and impacted hot adult contemporary radio on October 22, 2018 as the album's third single.
