How do embassies detect fake bank statements?

Most falsified documents are extremely easy to detect. After all, the person who created the fake got his money up front, and the unfortunate who paid him has no recourse, so why should the forger/counterfeiter bother to make a top-notch product - if he ever has actually seen an authentic one? The vendor doesn’t have to bother trying to fool the consul; he only has to fool his customer.
