JAN 23, 2019 Dear Sir, How delighted I am to write you today cannot be expressed in words totally. I write with the hope that this meets you well and communicates the plight of the average Nigerian student. The November 2018 strike is about to extend to March 2019 as the Academic staff union of universities and the Federal Government are yet to reach an agreement or have refused to reach an agreement probably because one of the parties has refused to yield to the demand of the other. It is true that many students like me may not understand the reasons for the unending strike actions we have to encounter as students of public tertiary institutions but we do understand the psychological effect it has on us directly. We will also love to agree with the union that the strike is in our favour, but how do you explicitly explain this to my mates and I as we watch our counterparts in private universities go about their academic activities uninterrupted and graduate as and when due. I have been told several times that in other parts of the world, public universities are better than private universities, although I haven't visited any country aside Nigeria (my beloved fatherland ), I'll be forced to believe so as tertiary institutions in Europe rarely embark on incessant strikes like it is the norm here. Our hopes have been raised and shattered over and over again by the numerous unyielding meetings and negotiations between the Federal government and the union. The last meeting held on Monday, 21st of January, 2019 gave so much hope to me and many other students who are affected by the strike after we read about the instruction given the labour minister Mr Chris Ngige by the President to make sure all issues that have kept us away from school are resolved. But little did we know that the meeting would end like others. We are getting to the point of depression and are about to give up on our education system, our plans are altered; how we are faring appears not be put into consideration. THE PAIN STUDENTS WILL GO THROUGH WHEN THE STRIKE IS CALLED OFF Sir, you may or may not be aware that when the strike is called off all students will be made to jump hurdles which they are unprepared for; we will be put on 'fire brigade' mode; we will have to cover a four-month course in one month. Has the union thought about how much stress this will cause our brains, our mental health and the financial implication on our parents, who will not be given enough time to be able to provide the money needed in school? What about students in their final year who have a lot of school work to do, ranging from assignments and research work to project writing amongst others? Don't you agree that the strike should be called off for the sake of these ones. The Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) has forms on sale for the next Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) whereas the newly admitted students in various universities are yet to begin registration or lectures, how will they cope as newbies in the system? Will these groups also get involved in the 'fire brigade' service. In all, I may not have spoken the minds of all public university students, I have communicated the feelings of most. We plead that as a father you hearken to the cries of your children and see reasons to find a common ground with Federal Government and put an end to the strike. Yours Faithfully, Signed Okafor Chiamaka Favour, a student journalist at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. http://saharareporters.com/2019/01/23/open-letter-ASUU-president-okafor-chiamaka-favour%E2%80%8B 19 Likes 2 Shares

What lunacy. ASUU should not even think of calling of this strike. Our education system is in shambles, y'all should stop pressuring ASUU until the FG does the needful. Sometimes I wonder if these people mounting pressure on ASUU are truly students because no sane student would want to continue learning in that shithole system. 36 Likes 4 Shares |

MathsEconomics:What changes will occur in school now if FG pays the money to ASUU and they calls of the strike??.. Won't the students still see the same old buildingsstructure?? Won't the students still see the same tet-fund buildings Won't Students still see the same Laboratories and class rooms ?? Will security in Universities improve?? Will the students be having steady power supply?? Will the students have serene environment to read Wont the students be seeing some LAZY Lecturers who are not ready to teach?? Do you know that Depression Is currently on hold on some of the Students?? And most of the students are now having a second thoughts about schooling?. Do you that our "rents" , "Hostel space" in school is counting and some have expired, will ASUU pay it for the students?? The lastly, what about the FINAL YEARS who are supposed to convocate last year, but are still unable to cos of this Strike, can't the union at least have mercy on them Answer my questions in ordely pls The Union should call off the strike and continue negotiating with the FG... IS that too much to ask those who do recieves their monthly salaries but are not working 43 Likes 1 Share |

TeleboiZ005: Your points are valid. No changes would occur but if the fund is managed properly, our siblings and children are going to enjoy a better education system than we did. If ASUU should call off this strike and never go on any industrial action again, those 400level students you mentioned will definitely be happy, but our education system will also decline to the minimum. Let everyone be patient, the government should provide proper funding to the education sector. The quality of education in Nigeria is too low, we should fight this not ignore it. 16 Likes 2 Shares |

MathsEconomics:Ok... But the most provoking part in all these is the meeting between the FG and ASUU. Eight meetings so far, No conclusion, different stories from the two parties always, which the students find it hard to Believe on anymore... Just this morning, the ASUU president said they didn't come to any agreement and they are not getting back to their members, unlike what was being said by the minister of Labour... 2 Likes |

There are many unscrupulous elements in that union. ASUU are not really in it and posterity will judge them. When you fight corruption, corruption fights back! Just imagine one of their demands......... 3 Likes 3 Shares

MathsEconomics:Isoright You don't know anything There is never a time ASUU will not go on strike You are talking like a kid. This is Nigeria son Grow up Their actual demand for now is unrealistic With sense and if both parties continue to shift grounds they can reach an agreement. Even if government should cough out two trillion to ASUU now I assure you in the next three years matters will rise again. That is the beauty of democracy. Government and the demand of masses is a continuum. It never ends till the end of time 2 Likes 1 Share |

While incessant ASUU strikes are not welcomed, majority of students have failed to take advantage of strike periods. Did ASUU place a ban on students from studying or acquiring a skill during the Strike period? I can recount a few successful career men who took advantage of ASUU strike to better their lot. ASUU strike is not a license for idleness. For serious students, download Q and A App from Google playstore - search "q and a" on playstore, download the first app from the search result. You'd find useful FREE career and educational resources on the App. 2 Likes |
