[size=22pt]200 Blind persons regain sight after surgery at the Ophthalmology Centre, University of Ado-Ekiti Teaching Hospital -[/size]


No fewer than 200 blind persons have regained their sights at the ongoing free eye surgery organised by the Ekiti State government at the Ophthalmology Centre, University of Ado-Ekiti Teaching Hospital.


The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Femi Thomas, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti that the patients came from all parts of the country.

He said the surgeries were performed by 15 Cuban doctors hired by the state government and their Nigerian counterparts.

Thomas said some of the patients, who had been blind for about 20 years, included a 90-year-old man and a septuagenarian woman from Katsina State, who had been blind for 10 years, as well as an undergraduate student of the University of Ado-Ekiti, who had been blind from birth.

He said that the exercise commenced four weeks ago, and that most of the patients were indigent and afflicted by cataract, pterygium and other eye ailments.

The commissioner said 409 patients were expected to benefit from the free surgery under the government's eye treatment programme.
