The Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the Rivers State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jerry Needam, on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 escaped a kidnap and assassination attempt.
The incident which occurred at his residence in Port Harcourt, makes it the third highly organized politically motivated plot on his life.

After the armed men stormed his residence in the early hours of Tuesday, they shot sporadically to gain entrance into the compound.

During the incident which lasted for over 2 hours, Mr. Needam was said to have put a distress call to the Police who promptly arrived his residence and engaged the gun men in a fierce gun battle leaving the compound, rooms and vehicles riddled with bullets.
A statement he personally signed on Tuesday revealed that three of the gallant Police officers, including an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) lost their lives while two other Police officers and Needam’s security guard, who suffered serious gun shots are now receiving treatment at a private hospital in Port Harcourt.
Speaking shortly after the failed kidnap and assassination attempt on his life and family, Needam said he believes that the mastermind of the kidnap and assassination attempt are his political opponents who desperately want him silenced following his strong political views and his penchant for speaking the truth.
Meanwhile, Needam, who few hours ago had interactions with the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Musa Kimo, on the incident expresses confidence in the ability of the Command to investigate the matter and fish out those behind the assassination attempt on his life and entire household.
The statement commended the prompt response of the Police to the distress call and their demonstration of professionalism in the encounter with the heavily armed assassins.
He also sympathized with the Police command and the families of the deceased policemen, praying that God would give them the fortitude to bear the loss of their beloved bread winners.
Needam further expressed gratitude to God for saving his life and the life of his family and to all friends and well-wishers who on hearing the news, called to show concern and to wish him God’s protection.

Now, we elected a man that will curb corruption and people think it will not affect the economy? Thats a very dangerous illusion a country can put herself in!

Of course there are going to be hardships, some people might be on sofas when experiencing it, some on wooden chairs, some standing, some while on their knees, we just have to deal with it and survive!!!

Barely nine days into the new year, Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has stated 20 things Nigerians should expect to happen under the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government in 2016.

In a statement personally signed by Fayose, yesterday, he said: “Fellow Nigerians, I want you to take note of the followings that will unavoidably happen under the Buhari-led government in 2016.”
1. Workers Strike: There will be so much industrial unrest, especially in the first quarter of the year.
2. Subsidy: There will be removal of fuel subsidy and petrol (PMS) will sell over and above N100/litre, leaving the masses in more serious hardship. Product will not be available and long queue in petrol stations will persist throughout the first quarter of 2016 and beyond.

3. Electricity: Power generation will drop to the lowest ebb. Still, Federal Government will increase tariff in 2016.
4. Unemployment: Millions of jobs will be lost in 2016 as against the three million jobs promised by the APC yearly. Most States and Federal Government will retrench workers as evident in the over 2,000 Federal University workers already sacked.
5. Economic Policy: Most private owned middle-class businesses will fold up because of bad economic policies of the Buhari-led government.
6. Devaluation: The Naira will continue to have a free fall which will take it to as low as N320 to one Dollar.
7. Economy: The Buhari-led FG will have no solution to country’s economic problems.
8. Security: Boko Haram will keep spreading and the Shiite Muslims will get more emboldened.
9. Human Rights: Penchant for dictatorship will rise with rampant human rights abuses and disobedience to court orders.
10. Anti-Corruption: Insincerity in the fight against corruption will continue and the fight will not only be selective and political, but targeted more at Southerners.
11. Elections: Attempt to forcefully control any of the South South States of Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Bayelsa by the APC will lead to unprecedented deaths.
12. Economy: Crude oil price will fall to below and about $30 per barrel.
13. Anti-Press Laws: The masses, especially men of the media profession will rise against the FG’s plot to deny Nigerians of their rights to freedom of expression. There will wide condemnations by Nigerians and the International community against President Buhari’s human rights abuses and disobedience to court orders.
14. Polity: Renewed efforts will be made to remove Senator Bukola Saraki as the Senate President; this will not only fail, but will heat the polity.
15. Hardships: Nigerians will experience more hardships. The President himself attested to this (THE SUN newspaper Tuesday, December 15, 2015). This obviously negates the change Nigerians voted for.
16. Elections: Plot by the APC to take control of at least one South South State will lead to death of many people. Particularly, rerun elections in Rivers and Akwa-Ibom States will cause many deaths.
17. Corruption: Halliburton scam may be revisited in 2016.
19. Kogi State: Court will sack Governor-Elect, Yahaya Bello.
Bayelsa State: Governor Seriake Dickson will win the supplementary election.
Taraba State: Governor Darius Ishaku will be victorious at the Court.
20. Politics: There will be subtle political alignment and realignment before the end of the year ahead of 2019 elections.

The House of Representatives said on Tuesday that 700,000 lives had so far been lost to the Boko Haram insurgency ravaging the North-East, besides another 2.2 million people displaced in the zone.

The figures were given in Abuja as the House debated a bill seeking to legalise the establishment of the North-East Development Commission.

The bill, which was sponsored by the Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, passed the second reading on Tuesday.



However, it was the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Yussuff Lasun, who presided over the House to allow Dogara to lead the debate on the bill.

Lasun said, “This bill is dealing with a very serious issue and we have to treat it as such.

“We are talking of 700,000 lives lost and as many as 2.2 million people displaced from their homes. It is very serious.”

The envisaged commission is among other responsibilities to “receive and manage funds from allocations from the Federation Account and international donors for the settlement, rehabilitation and reconstruction of roads, houses and business premises of victims of insurgency.”

Dogara, while leading the debate, described the condition of the displaced persons in the zone as “pitiable,” adding that unless urgent steps were taken to assist them, the situation would worsen.

The bill received the support of both the House Majority Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Minority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor.

Gbajabiamila said that the situation in the North-East was comparable to the fate of the people of the Niger Delta, which forced the National Assembly years back to establish the Niger Delta Development Commission.

He added, “We have reached a point where we need this commission in the North-East.

“We have the NDDC in the Niger Delta; let us have this commission for the North-East.

“It is unfortunate that we hear stories of funds meant to solve the security problem of these people, being diverted. The compensation that these people need is the commission. Let us give it to them.”

Ogor said he was often moved to tears whenever he heard of the hardship being faced by children and women in the North-East.

“Our people have become refugees in their own country. The condition of children and women bleeds my heart; children have been out of school for many years,” he said.

The Deputy House Whip, Mr. Pally Iriase, also supported the bill.

He argued that Nigeria would hardly know peace if the insurgency in the North-East was not contained.

“We can’t move on as a nation if one part is held down. That is why this bill should enjoy the support of all,” Iriase told the House.

Three other bills sponsored by Dogara also passed the second reading.

They were a bill to establish the Federal Competition Commission; a bill to provide for how individuals should disclose information on crime; and a bill for an Act to provide for corporate manslaughter.

THE Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, said yesterday, that the country lost $248,238,305 and N3.558 billion between 2009 and 2015 to indiscriminate waivers.


This is just as the House of Representatives Committee on Ports, Harbours and Waterways has expressed worry over what it described as executive interference by the immediate past administration that incapacitated the House from carrying out its legislative functions.

NPA in a document it presented to the House Committee chaired by Rep Patrick Asadu, stated: “As a result of the Federal Government’s approval for 50 per cent rebate to petroleum product vessels berthing at private jetties, NPA has waived $248,238,305.80 and N3,558,148,366.98 as amounts that would have accrued as revenue from 2009 to October 2015.”

But the Acting Managing Director of NPA, Hassan Bello, failed to comment on whether the process leading to the concession of the ports was satisfactory.

Bello told the committee that NPA generated N128.213 billion between January and September 2015 and that N5,806,822,000 was remitted to Consolidated Revenue Fund.

He also said the authority generated N162.184 billion in 2014 and that N11,023,350,000 was remitted to CRF; N154.580 billion generated in 2013, with N493,895,000 remitted to CRF; N140.251 billion in 2012 while N20,713,768,000 was remitted to CFR.

He enumerated some of the challenges facing NPA to include funding of required infrastructure; cost of acquisition of land and compensation for future port development, lack of reliable power supply, bureaucracy in procurement process, encroachment on port lands and insecurity of the waterways.

The members of the committee had demanded to know the position of the authority in the area of declining revenue generation, status of NPA’s property in London; profile of concessionaires and concession agreements on ports and channels.

An eyewitness just sent in some photos and report of violent protest happening now in Kwara:
“So I happened to be in ilorin for some reasons and decided to visit a nearby restaurant for breakfast. Was halted by a mob of Kwara State Polythecnic Students who were protesting over a 10k increase in their school fees.
“They vandalized properties, made a number of bon fires and chanted war songs.
I understand that a detachment of police were earlier at the scene and fired tear gas however the students weren’t deterred by the tear gas. Right now there is no police presence here, perhaps they have gone back to regroup and reinforce.
“I’m at the mini campus (IOT) end though I hear same thing is going on at the main campus (Elekoyangan). Anyone there to update us?
“PS: These shots are as close as I could get, na God save my Xperia and my head oo, right before my eyes, a guy was mobbed for taking (or attempting to take) pictures and his phone was destroyed. These guys gat no chill.
“Updated : The police is back, firing tear gas, I don’t need to be told, am out. We usually know how this ends, at night the police would invade marked houses of students in the area and make random arrests. May God help us.
