The Old Testament

In other Catholic rituals like baptism it signifies the light of your soul after the Holy Spirit cleanses your soul from original sin which is the main purpose of baptism.

During Easter, the use of candle is even more prominent in the Catholic Church as the Pascal candles are used to signify the Light of Christ the Risen Lord.

In Anglican churches, we don't pray with or to candles. However, there is every likelihood that you'll see a BURNING candle in the altar, on the altar table. This is mere SYMBOLISM. It is just to symbolize the light of the gospel. It is mostly common to the conservative anglican congregation. Some modern parishes have adopted Fancy electric Lights. Bottom line: burning candles on Anglican altars symbolizes Presence of LIGHT and the light of the gospel which MUST NOT be quenched. Therefore, during services such as 'High churchmanship', the candle light MUST NOT quench.
