Valentine Day, which is touted as an occasion of love has always sparked off controversy among Muslims and a section of Christians.

Clearly, due to its murky origin understood to be rooted in ancient Roman festival known as Lupercalia which honored supposed pegan gods like Lupercus (god of fertility), Juno (goddess of marriage and women) and Pan (god of nature).

Perhaps another cause of contention is the confusion surrounding who Saint Valentine himself is, a man whose life the day purportedly personifies.

However, the Festival of Love has received tremendous acceptance across world countries as a major festival.

The essence of the celebration, as many including Muslims believe is to demonstrate love, a revere virtue. Can we then charged Muslims to stay away from celebrating it? When Islam encourages us to love one another? This question is answered briefly as follows:

In Islam, the Muslim festivals are clearly defined and well established as have been prescribed for us by Allah and His Messenger.

Allaah says in Quran 22 verse 67: “For every nation, We have ordained religious ceremonies which they must follow.”

Festivals are one of the most distinctive things by which religions and cultures are told apart, so whoever celebrates any festivals other than those prescribe by Allaah and His Messenger is not only imitating believers of other religions, he is agreeing with the most substantive rituals behind such festivals. In this case, paganism.

Imitating non-Muslims in general -whether they are idolaters or People of the Book - is Haraam (prohibited). This goes to include whether that imitation is of their worship - which is the most serious form - or of their customs and behavior.

The Prophet (SAW) said: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." [Abu Dawood]

And considering that Allah says in the Quran, “This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion,” there is no need to add anything to something which Allaah said He has already perfected.

Allah has made Islam cover all human interests at all times and in all places and for all people.

There is no area of life that the religion has not touched. So, one wonders what any Muslim would be looking for in this celebration which has not trace to the Prophet and we don't have evidence of it in the Quran.



Love in Islam is more general and more comprehensive; it is not restricted only to a love between man and woman. A man who sincerely loves his wife does not need this holiday to remind him of his love. He expresses his love for his wife at all times.

Again, if you love Allah and His Messengers, you will have love for good and righteous people and the society will be better.

Let us not be swayed by the propagation of the Val’s ideal of love especially as it is done today. Even in the Western world where this ideal is prominent, it has not helped the society. A study revealed that an average number of 11,000 teenagers are impregnated on Valentine day.

Popular Muslim Scholar, Ibn ‘Uthaymeen was asked about celebrating Valentine's Day, he replied thus: Celebrating Valentine’s Day is not permissible for a number of reasons, including:

It is an innovated festival for which there is no basis in Islam.

It promotes immoral love and infatuation.

It calls for hearts to be preoccupied with foolish matters that are contrary to the way of the righteous salaf (may Allaah be pleased with them).

He concluded that "It is not permissible on this day (Valentine's Day) to do any of the things that are characteristic of this festival, whether that has to do with food, drinks, clothing, exchanging gifts or anything else."

In essence, Val’s day does not have any positive impact on the society, rather it encourages permissiveness and immorality.
