have you ever thought of what was the first capital city of Nigeria, first thing that comes to your mind is Lagos. no the first capital city of Nigeria was Benin city it was called the city of kings or Benin city. then it has a fence or walls around it. it was said that the fence or was rounding it are four times longer than the Great Wall of China, and consumed a hundred times more material than the Great Pyramid of Cheops. They took an estimated 150 million hours of digging to construct, and are perhaps the largest single archaeological phenomenon on the planet. A Portuguese captain described the city in 1691:“Great Benin, where the king resides, is larger than Lisbon; all the streets run straight and as far as the eye can see. The houses are large, especially that of the king, which is richly decorated and has fine columns. The city is wealthy and industrious. It is so well governed. benin city was the capital of Nigeria then until Benin was being conquered by the European in 1870s this enable them shift Nigeria city out of the state. but you still heard benin city when reading state and capital this is also why they still called it Benin city till date. and it is the only city called called city when reading state and capital. if you think otherwise you can reply below let match the facts 3 Likes 1 Share |

labani06: maybe the image will explain better. benin was the name called southern eastern western Nigeria then only north was different, and benin city was the city, the ocean that flows below Nigeria then was called bight or bale of Benin meaning under Benin, the ocean was named to the country it lies on

goalernestman: What is the problem man is like on every site I always have to see ur name posting the same old crap has usual. Anyway by wall kingdom did u mean the great wall of Benin the second largest wall kingdom in africa after THE GREAT WALL OF EREDO in ijebu. And biafra is not even what igbo people called themselves during that time and Benin was never the capital of Nigeria the map u keep posting everywhere is fake if that is ur only point u have to say. The Portuguese would neve first arrive in calabar it would be Lagos probably the part that belongs to Benin. |

Weedfree: I don't have any objections to the remaining but as for where the Portuguese visited, it was Benin, infact Benin was the first city to have contact with Europeans which is the Portuguese during the 13th or 14th century |

gregyboy: They must understand that this is 21st century not some 16th century what rules the world today is capacity building and enterprenuership but these two things are lacking in Benin Lived in ogida ...upper Siluko Rd! To be honest the average Benin dude is not ready to face the 21st century! They are content with their 16th century fetish lifestyle with King worship The world ain't waiting ...people are moving forward |

Re: The First Capital City Of Nigeria, Was Not Lagos Or Abuja Or Calabar by gregyboy(m): 1:13pm On Feb 17, 2019 |
IkpuMmadu: I totally disagree on the worship culture i am a benin man most benin elderly men still hold still to their original culture everyone in benin hold still to the oba of Benin even the state govenor but most youth are atheist in nature tho they go to church but they will defend thier original religion first over the white men own if thier religion was been looked down upon by a different tribe apart from Thiers that doesn't mean they give a Bleep about it or worship it literally they give a Bleep on no religion but dont insult Thiers that is the rule..the myth that benin fly are those days you hardly see a benin youth in nigeria this days that would have time to fly as a witch around when the rest are making money in ghana...benin from creation till early 2000 has changed religiously don't be fooled by people opinion the problem in benin now is over migrarion of the youth outside the country leading to its underdevelopment not the witches 1 Like |

The first capital city of Nigeria is Lagos. The remaining cities were regional capitals. As for Benin city, it was an ethnic capital city of the Edoid peoples. |
Re: The First Capital City Of Nigeria, Was Not Lagos Or Abuja Or Calabar by HarryDuce(m): 5:26pm On Feb 18, 2019 |

goalernestman: IF u had read my previous post u would know that I supported u by saying they possibly arrived through Lagos probably the part that belongs to Benin kingdom. AND the bight of Benin was probably called that because Benin kingdom was probably the most favoured by the Portuguese. 1 Like |

Was it the capital before the entity was called Nigeria or after. The capitals that are recognized are the ones that came after the we became a country and called Nigeria. |

gregyboy: so u do know the itsekiri kingdom was established in the 15th century. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now present day Nigeria were the Portuguese they first called Benin empire beny during the reign of oba ozolua in 1472 and 1486AD. The Portuguese admitted to finding a very developed kingdom with a very advance system. This visits and subsequent interchanges lead to king John II of Portugal who reign from 1881 to 1895 to exchanging correspondence with the king of Benin on peer like basis. |

goalernestman: Oshogbo weed at work again. STOP smoking that s**t. The Portuguese could not possibly have visited the capital of Nigeria in the 1691. This is because Nigeria was only organized as a country in the 1914. The capital of Nigeria could not have been moved out of Benin in 1970. A sane people KNOW that the capital of Nigeria in 1970 was Lagos. You are either INSANE or a child! 1 Like |

DonCandido: and who told you Nigeria was not organized as a nation even before the British came, let me tell you Nigeria was a nation before, from the middle east to the south east and west was known as bight of benin or Benin, and the city of this place runs in street light as far as the eyes can according to captain Lourenco Pinto who came ti Nigeria then in 17th century |
