INEC chairman admits commission contractor is APC senatorial candidate

tribuneonlineng.com Feb 17, 2019 9:39 AM

•Says process not compromised

National chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, on Saturday admitted that candidate of the All Progressives Congress, for Niger East Senatorial District, Senator Mohammed Musa, was a registered contractor with the commission.

The INEC chairman made the disclosure at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, had in a statement hinted the nation that the Managing Director of Activate Technologies Limited, Mohammed Sani Musa, whose company supplied the machines used in printing the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), was the candidate of the APC for Niger East Senatorial district in the aborted Saturday’s election.

Atiku, in the statement, further argued that “given that Mr. Musa’s previous company, Act Technologies, had a contract to supply and install PVC card printers in the INEC Headquarters, it does beg the question why Mr Musa’s new company, Activate Technologies, was given a subsequent contract to print PVC cards itself?”

“Other investigations have revealed that an employee and Director of Activate Technologies and an APC member, Mr. Mohammed Keffi, was filmed at Abuja Airport Domestic Departure Lounge on December 29 opening an official INEC envelope and then handling multiple ballot forms which he was checking off against his mobile phone.

INEC obtaining ad-hoc staff list from APC ― PDP
Atiku further noted that “while Sani Musa has the right to hold any public office in spite of his line of business, it is morally unjustifiable to allow a well-known supplier of sensitive INEC materials to partake in an election in which the key materials to be used for the poll were supplied by him.”

Asked by a former Aviation Minister, Osita Chidoka, who stood in for PDP national chairman, Uche Secondus for clarification, the INEC Chairman admitted that he was aware that the said contractor with the commission was a senatorial candidate of the APC.

But he, however, assured Nigerians that it would not affect the credibility of the electoral process.

He said: “Yes, I am aware. That company has been working with the commission since 2011. I assure you that we have a strict system. No electoral officer will be compromised. The integrity of the process is protected.”

Buhari/Apc are just plane evil, all that is happening is just interventions by Providence ,only God knows the terrible schemes Apc has planned.dead or alive there has never been n I don't if there will ever be a corrupt free politician to rule Nigeria, what Nigeria as a very diverse country needs is someone with the capacity, competence n accommodation to all in our diversity to lead,Atiku has clearly shown these qualities n truly deserve a chance now if we really want the country to move forward.

They complain about Electoral law that was passed and signed by them.
They complain about Amina Zakari that was appointed to INEC during their regime.
Now they are complaining about a contract they awarded during their time in 2011.

Believe me, everything the PDP says is either focussed on casting bad aspersions towards Buhari, APC and INEC or mere propaganda which will culminate into rejection of the election results if they fail.

From this post, all current PVCs should not be used for elections since the contractor is partisan. Infact election should not hold, Buhari to just hand over to PDP for peace to reign.
Few points to note
Truly, the man's company was awarded the contract 2011, and it wasn't a lifetime contract- this implies another company can also take charge in subsequent years after, no one has a monopoly of doing things...
In all sincerity, you know this process is bad for our democracy. It further tells the wish of the masses is inconsequential...
Let say what is right irrespectively of party affiliation.

He is not a referee.

What makes a PVC readable by a card reader? Its the chip which has a unique authentification. He can produce all PVCs for himself or APC, card reader will not authenticate it because the coding is INECs responsibility and rest with INEC. Say produce card 1 to 10. INEC card reader is programmed to read car 1 to 10. In this case card 11 to infinity is not authentic. Another 1 to 10 is a duplicate and must be used in the same PU as the authentic card which will flag off the duplicate.

Did you read with understanding or you just read sentence and not try to comprehend.. Contractor registration is different than awarding of contract. In business, if your judgement is going to be swayed, you extricate yourself of such liability. or the contract is not awarded to you.

If this is the contractor's profile, I have nothing against him. There is a reason Pdp's government, APC's government and even Inec chairman trusts him. There are few people with such company and qualifications in Nigeria. He is simply competent. If a company started producing election materials for 2019 election in 2016 when its boss was not interested in a political position there would be disorder if the same company's contract is terminated when it is 85% completed because its boss decides to contest for a legislative seat late in 2018.

The man had been a contractor with INEC since 2011, and was retained even as a card carrying member of the pdp by past administrations. So INEC should revoke his contract because he is contesting for a senatorial seat?
Did he not contest for electoral positions, as a contractor/pdp member?

Why our people be like this sef?

How can the INEC Chairman proclaim with so much inglorious assurance that the election or electoral process can not be compromised after this revelation?

There is a gross conflict of interest here where the manufacturer, distributor and installer of very vital components of the electoral process is also involved as a contestant in the very same process he has a business in. How exactly is this not a conflict of interest?

Is the fact that there was discrepancy in voting materials at the very senatorial district (North East) this same contractor is contesting under, not provide evidence to the very existential threat to the electoral process this man poses?

And to clear up a deliberate misinformation I have just seen someone here spit: When this man was given a contract in 2011:
1. He was not a senatorial candidate, nor was he involved in the election as a contestant.
2. His contract specification was limited to INSTALLING PVC machines at the INEC headquarters ONLY.
3. His company was named ACT Tech

Now, to conceal his vested interest as a contractor and also as a contestant in the same process, this happened:
1. He renamed the company ACTIVATE Tech but was still stupid to have his name and family as investors
2. His contract specification now included PRINTING card readers, electoral materials, DISTRIBUTING these same materials and INSTALLING them nationwide.

Anyone who can not see the possibility of interference here lacks any sort of critical thought.

God bless you my friend
