1 Become aware and avoid bad oral habits: teeth clenching and grinding, unnecessary teeth touching or resting together, pushing tongue against teeth and tensing the jaw. do not bite your fingernails, pens or pencils.

2 try to find the most relaxed position of your lower jaw. the best position feels comfortable and provokes as little tension of the chewing muscles as possible.

3 learn the proper resting position of your lower jaw: the teeth slightly apart, the lips very lightly closed and your tongue near the front teeth. the open space between the upper and lower back teeth is about 3 mm. When there is no teeth contact, the tension of the chewing muscles decreases.

4 remember a good upper body posture with a good aligned position of the head.

5 avoid sleeping on your stomach since it strains your jaw and neck muscles. use a good pillow which supports the curves created by your head, neck and shoulders. Neck exercises and massage is a good practice to maintain yourself healthy

6 Breathe through your nose rather than mouth. Breathe naturally. relax your chest and abdomen and allow them to expand.

7 avoid excessive gum chewing.

8 Chew your food on both sides of your back teeth.

9 do not rest your jaw on your hand.

10 avoid exposing your head, especially the temporalis muscle, and your upper body to cold draughts.
