It can be very discouraging when you realize that your relationship is failing. But that doesn’t mean you have to throw in the towel! There are actually a couple times when a relationship on the rocks can be saved. Not ready to give up on your union just yet? Here are the signs your relationship can survive.

There’s a commitment to compromise

Constant arguing is reason enough to feel that you and your partner should call it quits. But if the two of you are committed to finding more common ground, then the relationship can potentially be saved. The key here is to compromise without feeling like either you or your partner are sacrificing your beliefs. If you are both committed to compromising without giving up too much of yourself, then there is hope.

The will to change

It’s up to you and your partner to identify what is going wrong with your bond. Maybe your partner is bad with money, or perhaps you have trouble keeping your temper under control. The key, once you pinpoint the problem, is to identify whether or not you want to fix it. If both you and your partner are open and willing to make positive changes, then your relationship has a chance of surviving.

You respect each other

Respect may be the most important foundation for any relationship, whether it is with a family member or your significant other. So if you and your S.O. are headed for a split, ask yourselves: Do we still respect each other’s opinions and actions? If you do, then there is a possibility that you can work things out. If you have stopped respecting your partner, then the union will not be able to survive.

There’s some romance

It may be hard to focus on romance when a relationship is in jeopardy. But if you and your partner are still passionate towards each other, there is a possibility that you can mend fences. The romance is sure to thrive down the road if you are able to get through this rough patch together.

You have an abundance of trust

If respect is the foundation for a healthy relationship, then trust is the cement that holds that foundation together. Trust is also, unfortunately, a delicate apparatus that many individuals struggle with. Lies about money and fidelity are two big issues that can break trust very quickly. If your partner breaks your trust and leaves you feeling vulnerable and insecure, your union may be doomed. But if the two of you trust each other to get through this tough time together, then your relationship may have a chance.

There are feelings of security

We aren’t talking about the security you get from financial stability. We mean emotional security — the kind you get from a supportive partner. If your union is failing because you don’t feel supported or emotionally secure, then it’s probably time to call it quits. But if you’re having difficulty letting go because your partner still gives you that secure feeling, there is a chance the two of you can work things out.

You’ve established similar core values

We get into relationships because we share core values with someone, right? So naturally, when your values and ideals change, there is a chance that your relationship will suffer. But if you and your partner continue to share those core values that got you together in the first place, then it could be worth it to try to work things out.
