She was rushed to hospital in the capital Ljubljana claiming that she was the victim of a horrific accident while cutting branches.

But the woman left the severed hand at home in a deliberate attempt to ensure the injury was permanent, cops claim.

She and a relative have been arrested and each face up to eight years in prison if convicted.

They allegedly took out an insurance policy in recent weeks and had stood to gain around €400,000 (£340,000).
