sanusi, Jonathan, ngoziNIGERIA’S domestic and external debts stood at a N7.5 trillion as of December 31, 2012. Director-General of the Debt Management Office (DMO), Dr Abraham Nwankwo, disclosed this on Monday at the sideline of a two-week seminar on Sub national Debt Sustainability Analysis/ Portfolio Review Training Programme for officers of Debt Management Departments (DMD) in states. According to the Director-General, the external debt of Nigeria, as of December 31, 2012 stood at $6.5 billion (N1.040 trillion), while the domestic debt within the same period was N6.5 trillion. Dr Nwankwo stated that the concern of the government was not the size of the debt, but the use to which these loans were deployed to. He said the government, in line with the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan, was laying emphasis on value for money and the ability of the loans to generate employment, create wealth and enhance economic growth. On the sustainability of the debt, the DMO boss stated that the debt ratio was about 19.4 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product and far below the 40 percent threshold of countries in the same pedestal with Nigeria. Going down the memory lane, the DMO boss stated that a five-year programme was drawn out for all the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory to have Debt Management Departments (DMD) in their domains. He said by December 31, 2012, all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory had established DMD in their domains. Dr Nwankwo said the two-week seminar, which commenced on Monday, was being organised to equip the staff in the DMDs to be able to grasp the full knowledge of what they were expected to do in the discharge of their duties. At the end of the seminar, he said the DMD staff would be in the best stead to prepare debt sustainability analysis for their respective states, noting that the overall objective was to ensure debt sustainability in states. For effective debt analysis, Dr Nwankwo solicited the support of the DMD staff to ensure that data needed were promptly released to the DMO as at when needed. The DMO boss stressed the need for the officers to liaise well with the governors, directors and others that would boost their activities in carrying out their jobs. On the issue of state debts, Dr Nwankwo said the DMO had been able to reconstruct the domestic debts of states, adding that very soon the results would be made known to the public. Also, he said the DMO was in possession of a comprehensive public debt data of the federal government and the states. |
There are strong indications that Vice President Namadi Sambo has a severe case of the jitters and mounting sleepless nights over reported pressures on President Goodluck Jonathan to drop him as running mate in the 2015 presidential election. A Nigeria newspaper, The Nation, reported yesterday that Jonathan’s strategists have recommended that Sambo be dropped for one of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governors in the North-West zone, as a strategy for grabbing the support of the three Northern zones. It was also reported that Jonathan’s middlemen and pundits have submitted a comprehensive assessment of Sambo, in which he is dismissed as “politically light and with no electoral value or strong base”, capable of advancing Jonathan’s 2015 Project. The Project is led by Oronto Douglas, Jonathan’s Man Friday. A competent source in the Presidency in Abuja confirmed to SaharaReporters that the jitters in the camp of Sambo, who nurses presidential ambitions of his own, are quite strong but that he is networking frantically in order to regain his relevance in the eyes of those that matter in Jonathan’s political calculations. The source added that Jonathan may pick as his running mate any of the relevant PDP governors, excluding new Kaduna State Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, who like his political godfather Sambo, is still learning the art of the politics of the long knives and sharp blades. The source affirmed that Jonathan’s main worry about Sambo is his inability to organize a strong political base in his home state of Kaduna and the North, given his serial electoral losses in previous elections. The Vice President, one source said, has been courting former President Olusegun Obasanjo and some prominent Northern politicians such as General Ibrahim Babangida, to get them to intervene to enable him to obtain a soft landing. The task before Sambo, in terms of containing opposition in the North, is formidable, and his spokesman and political adviser, Umar Sani and Abba Dabo, are said to be overwhelmed by the dicey challenge confronting their principal. Others, such as Senator Isaiah Balat, according to the source, have lost out in the volatile politics of Southern Kaduna where there is a serious feud between the youth and the elite. As Jonathan’s strategists have affirmed in their match-plan, the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Sani Sidi; and the Minister of Environment, Hajiya Hadiza Mailafiya, both of them cronies of Sambo, also lack a strong base in Kaduna. http://saharareporters.com/news-page/vp-sambo-jittery-over-prospects-jonathan-dumping-him-2015 |

The police in Ondo State have concluded investigation into the killing of a Police Inspector, Adelakun Lawal, the new Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Patrick Dokumor, has confirmed. Dokumor told reporters on Friday that the Criminal Investigation Department would soon prosecute an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr. Kazeem Shehu, suspected to have killed Lawal. He said, “A full investigation into the matter had since commenced and the suspect has been in custody since the incident happened. Investigation will soon be concluded on the matter and he will be prosecuted according to law” A group, the Defence for Yoruba Peoples Right on Thursday, had demanded justice over the murder of Lawal. Adelakun, a father of six, was until his death attached to the Yaba Divisional Police Station in Ondo and a prosecutor in a Chief Magistrate court in the town. Shehu allegedly murdered him at a bar in the town. President of DYPR, Chief Muyideen Olamoyegun, had said the group decided to seek justice in the matter in order to draw the attention of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar. He expressed disappointment over what he described as “the slow pace of investigation and the inability of the police to bring the perpetrator of the crime to book several weeks after he was allegedly to have committed the murder.” http://247nigerianewsupdate.com/ondo-alleged-killer-cop-to-face-prosecution/ |
Apparently angered by his romance with the newly-formed All Progressives’ Congress, APC, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, descended on the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, describing him as a failure and a disappointment to the people of the state. PDP accused Okorocha of squandering the goodwill and support of the people by failing to deliver any tangible project nearly two years after he assumed office, regretting that they made a big mistake in entrusting the state to the governor. PDP National South-East Vice Chairman, Col Austin Akobundu (rtd), in a statement, challenged Okorocha to point out any project he had started and completed since assumption office in 2011, accusing him of being clueless, unfocussed and unprepared to tackle the challenges of the state. Akobundu said, “Under Okorocha’s watch, Imo has slipped into the failed states category. A state that was once celebrated for strides in education, peaceful co-existence and environmental renaissance has rapidly descended into a beehive for criminality and ecological disaster as a result of abandoned road projects by the Okorocha government.” But Okorocha fired back at the PDP, calling them a bundle of ungrateful elements, claiming that he had put the party to shame by spreading monumental development projects to all parts of the state unlike what obtained when the last PDP governor held sway for eight years. The governor, who spoke through his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Ebere Uzoukwa, warned that he was ready to use his membership of APC to flush out PDP from Imo State and the entire South-East so as to pave the way for the emancipation of the geo-political zone and its people, who had been denied development for about 15 years by PDP. http://247nigerianewsupdate.com/merger-fall-out-youre-a-failure-pdp-tells-okorocha/ |
