Oldest Local Government in Nigeria: Akoko-Edo

Oldest Local Government in Nigeria…Akoko-Edo is one of the six (6) Local Government Areas in the Afenmai/Afemai Region in Edo North Senatorial District of Edo State of Nigeria with Its Headquarters at Igarra. The separation from Igarra to Benin City the Capital of Edo – State is around 160 km.


The historical backdrop of this local government can be followed back to the period of the British Colonial Administration in Nigeria after the formation of Kukuruku Division in 1918 which matched with the finish of the First World War and the resulting production of 7 District Headships in 1919 out of the Kukuruku division with one of the “Area Headships” at Igarra.

What’s more, when in 1963, the Mid-Western Region was made out of the Old Western Region, the present zone currently alluded to as Akoko-Edo comprised some portion of the then Afenmai/Afemai District Council. The oldest local government area is Ikot Ekpene
That was were Lord Lugard experimented on District Administration before extending it to other protectorates
