The days for the PlayStation 4 are numbered. The upcoming PlayStation 5 is expected to wow gamers with beastly graphical capability and a secret weapon that looks ahead to the rise of VR gaming. But with with the very business model that underpins console gaming under assault from ascendant game-streaming services, whether the PS 5 can recreate its predecessor’s success is an open question.
Sony estimates that it has sold 91.6 million units around the world as of December 31, 2018 with the PS4 accounting for nearly half of all consoles in use, according to a November 2018 Strategy Analytics report. The company has clearly struck a chord with gamers and the PS5 is expected to elevate the beloved console to new heights.

Plans for the PS5 have been masked in secrecy, and an exact release date, specs, and even the game titles remain unannounced. But analyst predictions, patent filings, and online job listings have painted a picture of a console that will pay homage to Sony’s past consoles while advancing the console toward greater readiness for VR gaming. The president of Sony, Kenichiro Yoshida, stated the time for this innovation is now.

“The PS4 is entering [the] final phase of its life cycle,” he said said during a 2018 corporate meeting. That essentially confirms that Sony’s next-generation hardware is in the works, but when could consumers plan to see it hit shelves?

Console cycles typically occur every five to six years before their makers move to the next generation. The PS4 and Xbox One were both major exceptions though, arriving a full seven and eight years after their predecessors, respectively. The PS4 has been around for about five years now meaning the clock is starting to wind down and a new model is beginning to take shape.
